Re: Merged GF umpire thread

Good news is that Ablett is finally getting pinged for HTB when he takes an eternity to get rid of it!

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

I reckon the Cats have been getting awarded some very dubious or worse still, soft free kicks all game.

It's like everyone (the commentators & the umpires) are expecting the Cats to win so everything is biased against the Hawks.

Really frustrating to watch these decisions being given especially when we have a really good contest on our hands.

At qrter time I thought the umps had made a bet on the side. 3 goals they handed to Geelong for dubious frees. Then the a Hawks forward nudged a Cat backman in the side and got pinged for hands in the back WTF.

The Mitchell bump on Abletts shoulder wasn't a free and awarding the kick down field was just a shocker. If a 50m penality was awarded why didn't Ling or Ablett take the kick?

There was one soft free to the Hawks that resulted in a goallate in the match but the Cats had the best of the umpires yesterday.

Thank god the Hawks won comfortably and didn't loose by a couple of points.

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

You hawks supporters on this thread should be ashamed of yourselves! You've just won the flag and you're on here bitching about the umpires. Get off the computer you flogs and get on with celebrating the premiership. No-one remembers the umpires decisions!

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

Mclaren and vozzo got to umpire together in an important game go figure 3/4s of the decisions were rubbish.

Glad the hawks got over the line even after the men in charged tried to **** them

SO ,on your way of think,n......you only voice your thoughts when you lose, thus using it as an excuse.......Mmmm:rolleyes:

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

I thought the umpiring wasn't too bad overall. There were a few more frees to the Cats, but the Hawks were definately playing the man harder than the cats (there should be no argument about that), so that's kinda what happens. 21-29 isn't a massive divide anyway...

And as for goals from free kicks, the hawks got their fair share too, namely:

Hunt's very dubious "hands in the back" was a goal
Tom Harley's 50 metre penalty (extremely soft) was a direct goal to Osbourne.

They were also at crucial points in the game. So you got some help too.

And the double 50 to Bateman, you can't complain about that because Bateman had direct control over whether he was going to shut his yap.

In the end, it's done and dusted, I've seen FAR worse officiated games in my time, so just enjoy your win and stop bitching about the umps FFS.

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

what I FIND AMAZING .....no resposes from cat supporters......do i assume they agree with most of what has been written???
Most of it... we definately got the better of the umpiring but hawthorn still got a few line-ball calls, wasn't completely biased.
As i said on one of the threads on your board, i'd much rather see even umpiring than biased towards us, it undermines the boy's performances even when it wouldn't have made a difference.
McLaren and Vozzo should never umpire again

Re: Worst umpiring all year!

With regards to your first comment: (I agree with everything else)

Players are FULL TIME PROFESSIONALS. They should be able to cope with the pressure as well as the umpires. I can tell you if you are worried about this crop of umpires at present, wait ten to twenty years. The standard will be much worse then as it is now because of the lack of numbers coming through due to forums like this one and a culture where the umpire is not respected. No one wants to umpire anymore because of these type of forums which unfairly abuse and criticise umpires more than the players because it is the easy thing to do.

But surely we'll be right because there are so many experts on this forum that they can walk into the gig anytine. Surely all these people slagging off the umps are speaking from experience - not only do they have the courage to umpire but they have the skill and ability as well.

There's a word for people who get stuck into others for doing a job that they lack the balls to do themselves - i think it starts with an f or a c or something.

Great game - mistakes from umpires, mistakes from players, mistakes from commentators, mistakes from spectators - such is the nature of life

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

What about that disgraceful decision when sammy mitchell spoiled paul chapman's attpemted mark and then chapman was awarded a free kick for push in the back or something like that! I mean thats just wrong! But still hawks won :D GO THE HAWKS!

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

Geelong have got cheap frees all year they didnt deserve, Hawks always get the worst.

pitting the worst with the umps, against the best with the umps, on the biggest stage of the year, exposed it for what it was.

I think you're mistaken that people don't umpire (if that is what you're implying) because they lack the balls - courage has got nothing to do with the decision to umpire or not umpire.

People are allowed to whinge about the umpiring because we are PAYING FOR THEIR SERVICE through subscriptions (at grass-roots level), memberships, tickets and merchandise, which goes through the AFL and into the salary of the men in white.

There's no chance the AFL will have trouble attracting quality umpires at any stage in its future as long as the game is healthy. That's what it all come down to - the economy of the code. If there is cash then it will attract the employees.

Re: Worst umpiring all year!

I'll admit I was a bit biased at the game, and watching the replay, a lot of the stuff I was going off my nut about was called correctly. Mitchell on Chapman for instance, that was a free kick every day. At the game I thought he spoiled the ball, not the bald dome.

It was good to hear "No, that was staging" from them on occasion. Respect.

That said, there were too many decisions that were nothing short of disgraceful. How the umpires in a grand final can get the rules wrong astounds me. How the All Australian umpire doesn't get the grand final gig also astounds me.

It did affect the result, but thankfully we won anyway. No help from the umpires all year but, as they say, WE STUCK IT UP 'EM!!!!!

THE MIGHTY FIGHTING HAWKS!!!!!!

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

In this day and age is it too much to expect professionalism in the umpiring ranks. What had the chance of marring our great games showcase game was the decrepit and poor performance of those charged with administering the rules. As Tim Watson once so eloquently said "a fish rots from the head first", Its about time the umpires were coached/managed by someone who has been a success in their own right.

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

thought the umpiring was brilliant yesterday. Didnt notice them and they did not get sucked in by theatrics.
:thumbsu:

Really? You thought the frees against Roughy and Buddy were there? Please explain??

As I have said on numerous occasions..the worst thing the AFL have done over the last year or two is to have the umpires miked up. They really feel important now. Love the sound of their own voices. I was pissed off at the game and after watching again several times over the weekend, my view hasn't changed. Geelong are a protected species. Ablett is untouchable. The rules are different for him. As good a footballer as he is, he seems to have a long term lease on the football when he has possession. He gets caught with the ball, disposes of it any way he sees fit and the umpire waves his hands in the air , play on!!! Get fairdinkum!!

dilibrate against crawford

was smashed during the game but that 3rd quarter disision to ping crawf 4 dilibrate was sh1t never seen anything like that being paid b4 any1 tell me if im wrong.

Re: dilibrate against crawford

Its been called before.

It's bullshit because for mine if you are advancing the ball towards your goals then the deliberate rule should not apply.

Kicking a ball 30 metres forward of your position should never warrant a free against.

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

how did the 2 worst umpires in the league, and clearly the most biased, in mclaren and vozzo, get a gig in the GF? Mclaren should have won the norm smith he was that good for geelong, and vozzo has punished hawthorn ever since 2001 prelim. Well and truly filled the void left by Goldspank! Disgraceful umpires, both of them

Re: Merged GF umpire thread

Let me just say that I think Geelong probably had a good run from the umps in the GF. However I was watching the highlights again last night and I have 3 questions:
*Cyril Rioli's free kick he got on the wing when outnumbered 3 to 1 etc.. in the 3rd Qtr. Awesome effort but what was that for? To me it looked like either Rooke got a handball away or if he didnt then the ball was knocked free and shouldnt have been holding the ball?
*The Stewy Dew effort & handball to Mark Williams to dribble a goal through etc.. When Dew ploughed in and grabbed the ball as a 2nd effort, he grabbed the ball and banged straight into a Geel player who grabbed hold of him, he then went to move away from goal and banged into another Geel player whilst still being held by the first player and so then moved back toward goal by rolling over and throwing out a handball that fell to Williams to pick up and dribble a goal. My question-how the hell was that not holding the ball? He's moved in 3 different directions before finally releasing the ball whilst being held by the very first Geel player.
*And lastly, the Franklin handball to Dew who screwed a goal back on the left from 45 degrees. Great goal but how was that not holding the man against Franklin on Scarlett. Scarlett was in front about to pick up the ball, but he never did, before Franklin tackled him and pulled him away whilst Scarlett never actually touched the ball.

Now I know the downfield goal to SJ soon after for the tackle on Ablett etc.. was wrong, and I know we got a good rub with the umps at the same time, but please please explain those 3 to me which all proved to be the game breaking goals!!!!
