Rumour GFC 2024 Player Trading, Drafting FA, Rumours and Wish lists Pt 1

A Gettable article yesterday mentioned we've shown some interested in the following players:

Hugh McCluggage

As reported by Inside Trading last month, the Lions have put a six-year offer in front of the midfielder, who has expressed a strong desire to stay. But the likes of Adelaide, St Kilda, Essendon, Geelong and Collingwood have all shown an interest, with longer offers for more money on the table, so the 26-year-old has significant options. However, the Lions would likely match a restricted free agency bid and force it into a trade if that happened. Still viewed as likely to stay at Brisbane.

Bailey Smith

Hawthorn, Collingwood and Geelong all had a crack at Smith last year and are leading the race again in 2024, with the Bulldog out of contract this time around. As reported by Inside Trading last month, the Dogs have put a two-year deal on the table, but the feeling around the League is the 23-year-old will depart. How Hawthorn (whose first-round pick is set to be at the top end of the board) and Collingwood (who don't have a first-round pick this year) get a deal done will be a point of intrigue.

Elliot Yeo

There has been plenty of interest in the unrestricted free agent, who was in red-hot form before suffering a groin injury last week. He has a two-year offer in front of him to stay at the Eagles, while a number of clubs around the country have been interested, with Geelong and Essendon among those last year. Yeo is an unrestricted free agent but if a deal was strong enough the Eagles could get a decent compensation pick if he was to leave.

Whats your thoughts we would have to give up ( in a pick ) to get him..
For the sake of argument, let's say we've got pick 15.

My guess would be they would ask for a top 10 pick, and we'd posture for a pick in the 20s (bit like the Bruhn deal)

Ends up being our first with potentially some steak knives on either side (like a 1st & a 3rd for instance) but our first would be the key piece is my guess.

With that pick ending up being pick 20 anyway with bids, and Perkins being a young mid closing in on his prime, I'd be more than fine doing that deal...but understand if others are hesitant.

Granted, we can get a Holmes in that range...but we can also get a Stephens, Smedts, Lang, or Fogarty.

Leaves us with Perkins, Bruhn, Clark, Dempsey, Holmes, & Conway as the building blocks of a midfield that could be very special in within 2 years.

What's all this talk about recruiting forwards. Our forward line is clearly not the issue atm and Neale is ready to rock and roll !
Neale is a good young prospect. He is not yet 22 and he is also unproven. Id pressume soon we will see if he is up to being a regular selection. What we do know is so far he has not been as resilient as we might have liked but no matter. He should be ready ..and then we will see.

We are very thin after him… so purely from a development pov we need to add the next tall… as if we use Neale as an example ..he was drafted in 2020..so unless we manage to find a freak kid like Jed Walter, its going to take years to develop another to be ready

What do we think the chances are of James Willis and Phoenix Foster getting new deals? Struggling to get a proper read on them from the VFL thread.
They look like they up against it atm. Willis has been unlucky with injury but no has a lot of comp for a chance. Foster looks a little lacking in mobility. I hope both succeed , like every kid we draft but the facts are a lot come and go. Just the way it is.

Just gauging interest.

If you were to pick 3 realistic options and one pipe dream option right now around the League to go after to address needs.
Who would you go for?

1. Archie Perkins (midfielder)
2. Bailey Smith (midfielder)
3. Ned Moyle (Ruckman)

Pipedream: LDU

To be honest , Im not sure Perkins is a more realistic option. No matter who..if they came to the clubs and said I want in..we probably look at them hard. To me id look at someone like Davies at GC ..who is OOC , and is just being swamped with quality draft picks.

Pipe dream? Harley Reid says ..I dislike yellow and want blue and white.

Surely McLuggage .. would make it 3 FA’s that we would have to trade for.

Moyle is the biggest need but im not sure we would chase him or he would agree to come-conway and him probably wouldnt fit well together and moyle probably wants a club where he can be the clear starting ruck.

Id chase perkins over smith but thats just me.

Thing is i don't think Moyle’s going to get a starting Ruck role anywhere he wants to be. Stanley would probably be ranked close to 18th best starting ruck

Perkins and Smith are OOC that’s why I listed as realistic.
If they choose Geelong it’s going to happen.

Davies is a good shout though

Perkins at a club that historically can be pains to deal with and is starting to win games…. but as I said… if an appropriately talent players said…I want Geelong..then Id think thats half the battle done. With so many clubs/options the hardest part is getting a player to choose you.

The one thing that's comforting about this predicament is we know our club isn't going to sit on their hands and not fix this.

Scotty has been at the top of his game this year, there's not a snowballs chance in hell he's not going to be involved in courting LDU, Smith, Perkins, or whoever the target is.

He can sniff (no, not that 'sniff' Bailey) that 3rd flag, and he would know that with the way he's coaching this year, he's an A-grade midfielder away from getting it.

I still think we're going to see a move from left field to fix the midfield, I can't see Smith, Perkins, & LDU (who might not even be available) being the sole targets.

Whether that's getting in the ear of Davies, selling the farm and then some for Reid, I have no idea...but it's the Geelong way to go differently.

No quality there in this draft. Go best available.

Someone takes our first for a decent player

Ned Moyle #1 for me. He will be in the top 3 ruckmen in the league once Witts passes the torch.

He will be but witts re-signed til 2026 and i doubt moyle waits. He will move this off season imo.

Where ever our 1st pick lands after trades etc. Our priority will be a Key Forward

The trick is to sort the wheat from the caff …. can we find a winner from the type of pick we end up having. Some one fantastically talented…yet ..flys under the radar ..and slips thru to us.?

Here are a few of names in what the Herald Sun says is the top 75.. ..and one would think there will be others .that will come with a rush late.

YOTC favourite…. and he sounds like he is worth a look for sure.

A big boy ? A man child that struggles when steps up against men… or like Hawk ..what is big stays big and gets bigger and better. My bet is we would want to see some combine data on him… He doesn’t sound like a 2K runner but if he has spring and burst ..then who knows.

Think this kid may be FF for VicC

We have the McKays and the Kings …this year we get the Whitlocks … and apparently Jack is the KPF

… and perhaps the smokey? Not sure but he sounds like the type we have a ping at. State level in 400 and 800. Trouble is Swans Academy. (Mehh) Could we bid early on someone like this and see if they match ?

If we end up with a late first Faull looks like a good option. Armstrong injury affected year? Wells likes that

Having seen Armstrong I’d give him serious consideration even with our first if we retain it. Has serious talent. How he performs at the Champs will probably largely determine where his draft range lands. If we picked him up later on he’d be a steal imo.

Especially because they just used a top 10 pick on Read.

Moyle would be great if we got him on the cheap. He would back himself to get games over Stanley, so we would be appealing to him. But he wouldn't want to move here to be backup to Conway who we seem to think is our long term ruck.

He's clearly too good for VFL. But which other club does he walk into the number 1 role? Maybe Brisbane? Can't think of any others.

The dumbest thing the AFL has dictated like a dictator is removing the "weight" of male players. Just unbelievable. I want to know how heavy Sims is. I also wanted to know what Zuthrie was weighing these days, as he is having a great year. I might complain to AFL. I mean, they give so much data now, and they takeaway relevant key data lol.

Why? What difference does it make what they weigh? How much they can bench lift may be more interesting.

Be nice to pinch a FA form somewhere. Left Field …. a dfa from somewhere?

Collingwood, West Coast, Bulldogs if English leaves, Adelaide if O'Brien leaves
Collingwood - seem to rate Cameron highly. Enough to push Grundy out so not sure they seek Moyle.
West Coast - Traded Flynn in last year.
Bulldogs - Yes, if English leaves. But that's a big if.
Adelaide - Agree, they were the other one I considered as he could go past ROB. But if it's dependent on ROB leaving, you could make that argument about every team if their no. 1 ruck leaves?

I still don't see an obvious candidate unless he's happy to go somewhere like Melbourne on say a 3 year deal and wait for Gawn (who is 32) to retire. But then Witts is one of the older rucks anyway, so there's not much to be gained from that.

ROB is studying to be some sort of specialist doctor and has to move to Melbourne to complete his degree so rumours every year he will leave

So..we would like him to perform well…but not too well.
