2001 was a super draft but the first round still featured Graham Polak, Xavier Clarke, Ashley Sampi, Luke Molan, Sam Power, Richie Cole, Ashley Watson, Barry Brooks, Rick Ladson and Shane Harvey.

They get one shot here to get it right. Developing the players properly with a lack of senior players and getting smashed every week will be the issue. If you draft any interstate players particularly they are going to be a big flight risk if they get smashed for the next 2-3 years which you would expect with their exodus, even if they do draft well.

It seems a very Vic centric draft .. they could use everything on Vic players this year if they want but id imagine that eventually the will leak a few players.

Herschel Walker-type deal. Would be hilarous if that happened and Reid's career went the same way as Walker's did at the Vikings.

A WCE dynasty wouldn't be as hilarious though I guess.
Can't say I'm across NFL (I'll leave that to my kid) and, while I posted with tongue planted firmly in my cheek, there is a part of me that would love the Tigers to test the waters considering that (possible) draft hand.

Wc takes the call … what do you want for Harley Reid? All of them…
Richmond counter with 1, 10, 11 & 20 OR 6, 10, 11, 18 & 23 OR...[insert you counter-offer here]

Becomes an interesting, hypothetical thought game.

All depends on how you value draft picks (and the talent you might acquire in this year's draft) VS your thoughts about Reid and his worth/potential.

Not to mention Reid is getting used to fun in the sun as opposed to the black hole of Richmunt. If they are going to shop the brightest light they've got, there's only one place he'd favour.

Not sure Reid has any interest in forcing his way out of WC just to go to Richmond for a deep rebuild.

This game would become more serious if Buckley's suggestion of clubs being able to trade players without their consent developed legs*.

*unlikely but never say never I suppose

Just to put Richmond's list in perspective.

After bids they'll probably have something like:

1, 7, 12, 13, 21, 23, 27 and 28

I'd personally take

Holmes over pick 1.
SDK over pick 7.
Dempsey easily over pick 12.
Humphries over pick 13.
O'Sullivan easily over pick 21.
Clark easily over pick 23.
Neale over pick 27.
Conway over pick 28.

That's just our under 24s. Literally the most valuable under 24 player on Richmond's list would either be an injury plagued Gibcus, an ordinary looking Tom Brown or a decent looking rookie Seth Campbell.

I haven't included O Henry, Bruhn or Bailey Smith who are all way more valuable than anyone Richmond currently has.

It just shows that they could smash this draft and they'd still likely have clearly worse kids than we do. And we haven't had to go to absolute shit to achieve it.

Would make zero difference. No club would recruit a player who doesn't want to go there anyway.

I suspect that we're not far off it, I think as the wage goes up so will the culture change, I see list sizes decreasing and the barrier between the AFL and 2nd tier comps being more permeable, players will do what ever they can to stay in the game. That being said, no trade clauses are a thing in the NBA, though I don't think that there are many players who have them.

Kind of surprised we aren’t kicking the tyres on Sam Day or Membury or Jake Ricardi or Krueger or Tomlinson or Taberner.

We literally have absolutely nothing in regards key postion depth. Like nothing. If Neale gets injured for a full season then that’s one thing, but if he pulls a hammy and we lose a game as we are having to restructure then that’s just plain bad planning. Same at the other end of the field but at least have SDK, COS, Kolo, Blitz and Henry.

It'll never happen in Australia, and frankly it shouldn't. Unlike North America, workers actually have some semblance of rights here.

It's ok to send kids around the country when they're 18 IMO, but when they're established, have partner/kids, potentially older sick relatives - nope.

Maybe we will anyway with the players you mentioned. But i also think at this stage of his career Neale isnt that vital to our structure yet. Losing Neale would mean moving J Henry, SDK, Blicavs etc to the forward role and we probably dont lose much doing that.

1,19,11 & 20. and your soul …. We want rights to the jumper and the song …and when we play in Melb ..Punt road is our home ground ...

and after the deal is done … Reid say sorry not signing an extension...

Day just signed at Brisbane

I don't know exactly how "they" work out whether the draft will be good or not, because the kids can obviously only play each other. Well, apart from those two week VFL appearances.
I guess history suggests most top 10 mids go on to do ok
I don't know we always seem to do well with later picks

It's hardly an exact science
