Ultimately young players don't save you if they're no good. And Richmond are in the boat. Look at their under 24s. Is there a Holmes there? Or a Dempsey? Or an SDK or a Bailey Smith? No. There's not even an Ollie Henry, Tanner Bruhn or Lawson Humphries there that I can see. Jhye Clark who most around here are disappointed with would probably be their most impressive young player if he was at Richmond!

I would like it noted for the record that I quite like Kane McAuliffe too

Not necessarily as they are different types of players. That said with 7 spots to fill we probably need to focus on at least one mature age (probably henderson) and a few talls so it will squeeze spots for guys like Herbert (until the end of next year when we have a bigger turnover).

Clubs don't tend to blow up their lists for anything they can get when they're sitting on a goldmine of talent. Even Richmond supporters have accepted it at this point.

There's a couple that show signs. Campbell looks like being a decent player, Gibcus has his moments but can't stay healthy, and Brown can show flashes of talent, but that's as good as it's got.

Outside of that, it's not looking good. It would be like us sitting around with James Parsons, Timm House, Quinton Narkle, & Charlie Constable and claiming they're actually great, they just haven't been able to show it yet.

It would be ridiculous, and we'd rightfully be called out for being delusional nuffies huffing on copium.

Sometimes you just know. They might be sitting on a goldmine in a few weeks time, but they're not as we speak.

Under 24 could be 5 or 6 years into their career, you’d want to have shown a little by then, unless you’re 210cm tall.

A lot of them are not as good as what other clubs like us have in the young talent space. Gibcus is very good if injury prone and I like brown but a lot of the rest are long shots to make it and role players at best.

The thing that gives me pause if he's playing MF is his size-we already have a lot of these around 180cm mids including bruhn and Atkins and clohesy and Clark and mullin etc. It would be nice to have some more height there which is why it would be good if knevitt comes on. I wonder if the mix works unless say Herbert comes in and phases Atkins out.
It's less of an issue if they are drafting him as a specialist back pocket.

But on effort he probably deserves a rookie list year like Atkins did when he started. But guys like pike fill more of a list need so it's a tough one.

Their under 21s have time but they're also very speculative picks who haven't done much at AFL level.

The 21-24 group is a debacle. The comparison to our early 2000s team is pretty funny.

3-5 years into their career guys like Corey, Chapman, Ling, Ablett, Bartel, etc were key members of a team that just lost a prelim. 3-5 years into their careers Dow, Sonsie, Cumberland, Ralphsmith, etc couldn't hold their spot in the worst team in the comp.

Barring a miracle with the 1st and 2nd year speculative picks I'd say their current under 24s are the worst the AFL has seen this century. Yes they'll bring in a lot of talent this year but my god do they need it.

He is definitely our best VFL listed player, I just don't see him playing anywhere at AFL but as an unaccountable rebounding defender, and we have no shortage of guys who can do that role well.

I wonder if you could make him into a specialist lock down small defender (what bews used to be). He's got the toughness and accountability for it but maybe not the speed.
I agree he's our best vfl player on current form (we need to improve the vfl list though) so it's a matter if you reward him with a year as a rookie (which we have done before) or whether we go for bigger list needs.

I'd prefer him to sims at 45 if guys like faull shanahan gerryn barratt etc all go in the 20s and 30s which I suspect they will.

year of the cat I notice you took Charlie Nicholls for us in the phantom. I don't mind him as a development kpf he's very raw but has great athletic potential (and we like our SA kids). I'd prefer him to sims at 45 if guys like faull shanahan gerryn barratt etc all go in the 20s and 30s which I suspect they will.

To be honest he was pretty much the only one left I really rated as a KP prospect. He is raw though as you say. Personally I’d much prefer Gerreyn but he seems to be rising and may now be out of reach of us unless we trade back earlier into the draft.

Two years for a guy who is one big hamstring away from The End is a bit much IMO. Look after, sure - but let's not divorce ourselves from the reality that he will be 35 in April.
