The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

When a player is recruited to another club the contract can be renegotiated.

Similar to the Bowes contract being changed when he landed here, I’m not 100% sure why the total amount wasn’t renegotiated instead of being restructured

But I do recall a conversation stating that the contract can be ripped up and new one with a new amount can be drawn up after a trade .

How do you or we know he has only just been diagnosed, how do you or we know he has had his meds changed?

You don’t, you just think there’s some narrative because he’s abit lose it has to be drugs.

You’ve obviously never had to take meds for your mental health or anything similar because you have NFI

Speaking as someone that has been on medication since I was 19. I was initially given very poor advice about how alcohol would affect me going forward. I made some poor decisions. I even wondered why all my friends had become douche bags. Not only do these medications change how substances affect you. They also change your personality. It took me years to level out again.

Interesting to see some of the posts in the last 24 hours and perhaps a few people coming around to the idea that the Oliver deal is far from over. I've kept quiet this week for fear of retribution but FishGutz is on the money.

My contacts are telling me that the deal is not off the table by any stretch. Oliver still wants to get to Geelong - and Geelong still want Oliver. Mackie was straining himself to be respectful in the interview at the start of the week but I can guarantee everyone that this has not gone away and the likelihood of something eventuating is still very real.

As I've stated recently, don't be swayed by the verbal effluent being spewed by MFC. The only voices worth listening to are Oliver and his manager. Ask yourself this - if the Oliver camp was 100% happy to remain at MFC and not considering any potential move, then why have we heard zero from them this week to close this down. I'll tell you why - they are still heavily invested in getting to Geelong and are in active and substantial discussions with both parties behind the scenes.

We're barely halfway through trade period and this was never going to be done in the first few days - as is the case with the majority of larger deals bubbling away. It was conveyed to me that Oliver to Geelong is still a very real possibility and if it happens then don't expect anything to circulate in the media until the last 48 hours at best. It's in no-ones interests (player / GFC / MFC) to have this played out in the media.

I'm still firmly in the 50/50 camp for this deal getting done. Some I've spoken to (including someone very close to a player manager not involved) have suggested it's more likely that Oliver is at another club next season than not. It remains to be seen if that club is Geelong.

All that is very fair and true but it doesn't resolve the impasse over the contract price and I doubt that's realistically resolvable.

If we were to bag Smith and Oliver, our mf becomes immediately elite, and gives us the option to play Danger forward more in his last year or two, as the younger guys develop around him. But…Oliver, for example, has built his reputation roving to Gawn. Our ruck stocks are precarious, to say the least.
Stanley was serviceable this year, but cooked and has both feet almost out the door.
I really like Conway, but is he another case of a body just not resilient enough for the rigours of AFL?
Blicavs is far from the future of our rucks.
SDK. I’m not sure he’s capable of rucking permanently, physically. It’s a nice little experiment but I still believe he’s an AA potential key defender. Just needs his mojo back.
We have a weak draft hand for any rucks this year once we trade for Oliver/Smith.
So who carries the ruck burden around this potential mf?

Which is a bloody good player wanting to come to us (smith), another star season just finished narrowly missing a grand final, and a hellofa lot to look forward to in 25 with some gun kids developing with quality older players still around! !

If Oliver were to come, that is two more midfielders ahead of him and he didn’t even make an emergency in finals.

Could be a painful exit there to get Oliver.
