Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Free Agency Opens: Friday October 4 at 9.00am
Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

Trade Period Opens: Monday October 7 at 9.00am
Trade Period Closes: Wednesday October 16 at 7.30pm

Shame ..but I think Father Son will be gone by 2042 …. heart says I hope im wrong…. too many clubs not being lucky and a couple of being very lucky. Pies line up again next year with Mick Mcguanes kid ...
Simple fix for FS would be an independent panel to determine the worth of players and picks to be used - eg. they say Ashcroft is worth pick 1 at the start of trade period if Brisbane put their hand up they take their rd 1 then 2 etc. off them until they meet the points.

Clubs asking for more and caving on the last day is AFL trade period 101.

Some interesting stuff happening league wide.

The whole Houston thing with multiple clubs jockeying is not something you see every year.

Then you have the Hawks seemingly dissing the Eagles on the Barass trade by trading out their first rounder.

I don’t think my heads in the sand and know first hand afl players aren’t perfect.
I don’t think Geelong would attempt to recruit a as you say it “drug addict”
I have a few reasons why I think this

1. The industry talks
2.Claytons manager is Dangers manager
3.Shannon Brynes from all reports wouldn’t be the main driving force behind this, he would still have connections at Melbourne.
All good mate. Each to their own.

In this era of socialised equalised football drafting…. no cost will ever compensate the top clubs like this years Premier getting a kid as good as Ashcroft like this year. They literally could give every pick they have and its still a bargain. Get a star kid…add a couple at the end of the draft , maybe a Free Agent … and still be miles in front of most.

The only way I can see it surviving is no discount on the top end kids and finding a way to compensate for bad luck to allow teams that have not had a R1 Father Son for 5 to 10 years to get something. For example..to allow FS with lower number of games played , or maybe even to allow a club to nominate a defacto from a local zone.

We are soon to have over half the comp out of Victoria , add the clubs like Stk who have had no luck from it and It would not surprise me to see pressure mount which will eventually see it modified to the point of being redundant. Geelong have no had a decent Father Son for near on 20 years and we still get brought up as a Father Son club. Some hate it.

Watching two School kids in front of my car, one a prep red head, the other his big 10yr old brother who has snatched his footy card and won't give it back. After hearing a lot of wailing, I get out and ask him nicely to hand it over.
Then I see it. The card is Clayton Oliver.
True story, that's how boring trade week is, and maybe an analogy on how we'll get him. :)

Could you imagine the outcomes later when X player is judged a 2nd and is the next GAJ? One of those lands in our lap then there are a bunch of tigers supporters going into an ASIO domestic terrorism watch list.

Panels can't give a consistent MRO/Tribunal outcome, they're not going to be able to judge value i don't think. It's not the worst idea, but the whole field comprises not great ideas

I'm prepared for a heap of thumbs down & a raft of no's, BUT I'll throw it out the anyway

There's been reports that Carlton has made an approach for SDK offering pick 12 which we declined pretty quickly - if they came knocking again, this time offering picks 12 & 14, is it something we'd potentially consider?

We know that Tom Barrass was linked to Hawthorn, but with them pulling the trigger on that picks trade with Carlton, that potential trade is now on hold - was Barrass's move about specifically getting to Hawthorn or would he be open to playing in the hoops? A ready made KPD option and we could offer a similar deal to what was originally offered by Hawthorn?

We could also use the other pick as a straight swap for Bailey Smith, while keeping our own first round pick

Could open the chance to turn SDK into two ready to go players

Edit - Hawthorn had reportedly offered pick 14 & a second round pick for Barrass and a pick in return, so I was thinking of a similar type offer from us in the above scenario
I'm a huge NO on that.
Is that fair value? Easily.

But I've already suggested we need another KPD. So giving up that in my mind would be dumb.
Never mind our lack of ruck options.

What i don’t get is that half the clubs in the comp are offering the absolute world for picks 13 & 14. Like top 10 future firsts and seconds ect.

Yet here we have the poor old Doggies trying to convince the world that all drafts are the same and that 17 is useless. I mean there must be some drop off from 14 to 17 🤣

I'd take the 12 and 14 but wouldn't spend one on a 29 year old Barrass

So we ended up with 2 trades and a few pick swaps in a whole week.... Yeah no one is ever going to convince me trade period should be any longer than 7 days.

Either Monday to Monday or Friday to Friday at most.
Make it 3 days this is just drawn out for the sake of media coverage and nothing more

Do you have any idea how much Continental tyres inventory has turned over in the last 7 days?

I’ve heard there’s been queues of people going into Continental Tyres, kicking a few whilst in there and then walking out. Perfect sponsor for Trade Week. They’ve sold only 2 tyres though.

Continental want to sell them at $209 a pop and punters are only offering 10% of a future dole payment.

'take it or leave it" one was heard to say to the salesman.

Is this another dancing chicken type Gif or is their something we need to actually be jumping up in excitement about?

Boredom 😂

Wanted to see thy response if I posted a happy dance gif before running off to cook dinner

BUT if something positive happened before my return I could claim insider knowledge and be all smug 😎

Mackie hit them midships with a torpedo in the first half hour day one and the show has floundered ever since.
