They changed the lyrics for the game at Manuka from "the West of the Town" to "Canberra Town".

It was horrendous.

Sorry Rodney, but I beg to differ.

It was a three syllable swap. For games in Canberra only (like the addition of the Black Mountain tower onto the strip). We're not talking any significant deviation from the norm here - just three syllables interchanged in the very first line.

I think that it was highly respectful, and signals the Giants' intentions to not to use Canberra for a bunch of meaningless one night stands (or one day stands, since Manuka doesn't have any decent lights). Other clubs have come to Canberra in the past and played their games, then racked off back home with ne'er a care, but GWS are the first AFL team to actually take Canberra seriously.

Canberra has a larger and considerably more affluent population than either Geelong or the Gold Coast. Dilettentes who cruised in and out without making any sort of committment to the place alienated far more than they attracted, but GWS laying such an obvious claim to representing the ACT as well as Sydney's greater west will ultimately make them the dominant team in any code to play in Canberra.

Disagree with it 100% the team is called the "Greater Western SYDNEY Giants" not the Greater Canberra Giants....

I think it's great that they are playing in Canberra for 10 years and are trying to build up a supporter base there, There's no need to modify the theme song though just to accommodate the crowd in Canberra.

The Roos tried to get a supporter base there for a few years without any luck, same with the Dogs and a couple of other teams from Victoria which really was a waste of time imho.

I used to cringe when we played home games in Sydney and changed our lyrics from North Melbourne to the "Kangaroos" Didn't sound right at all.

I love the Giants song the way it is, it is so unique and different from the rest and I wouldn't say that about many of the clubs freo <-

Same, I was all ready to hate it, but the more I hear it the more it grows on me like some giant fungus. Big & Bold.

Most of the "new club" songs are terrible. The 2 exceptions are ours, the best of the "new" team songs and Adelaide. West Coast, Freo, Port Adelaide and Gold coast songs are ugly. I love Sydney's song and like the Brisbane/Fitzroy song.

I was a little annoyed that the lyrics were changed at first. But as long as the rest of the lyrics are the same, it doesn't really matter. We're getting a lot of support from Canberra and they deserve recognition.

At least it's original and different. Imagine if you had a live brass band play it after a win like in the NCAA. Honestly song composition hasn't exactly been the forte of the AFL. I'm still shocked at how many songs are ripped off from the U.S. The Demons song is the worst of them all, I mean at least change the lyrics a little.

And it sure as hell beats some of the newer songs that have been made. At least it pays homage to the old style and won't sound like an outdated piece of trash in a few decades.

Whenever I'm watching a US military based TV show (Homeland, NCIS etc) and they play the marine hymn and they are treating it all super seriously etc all I can hear is....
'We're the pride of South Australia, we're the mighty Adelaide Crows.' And I am forced to chuckle.

Hey meant no disrepect to our Capital Giants brothers. But just saying that Canberra should (and one day will) have their own team, and I think that we (Giants) are trying maybe a little to much to be all things to to many.

As a Canberra member, foundation member, etc, etc, I'm happy to just leave the song as it is, to have just one version. Club songs need a clear set of lyrics that everyone knows, just one set, that's it.

We have the Canberra jumper, and that's enough.

GWS fans won't attract extra Canberra fans just because there's a different version of the club song.
