Gilham vs Dawson

A better question would be is Al gonna improve his tactics involving his use of Dawson.

Good point, it's fair enough that he wants Dawson to get experiance playing against big forwards but if he is getting goal after goal kicked on him then surely he should be moved. Anyway that's for the coaching staff to decide. My personal preferance is Gilham. It may turn out that he turns out crap and Dawson becomes good, but he just looks like he is more able to compete with the bigger forwards.

Neither preferrably. I rate Gilham highly, but will never play on the massive forwards, even at Box Hill struggles.

But on the second talls, he's smart, good skills, excellent spoiler and uses it well. Play Croad on the biggest forward, then have Gilham, Dawson, Murphy, etc mould together to take everyone else. If we get a hardworking defence worked around Croad I reckon it has some potential, but its gonna take time getting the strength into the young players.

Dawson is about the same age as Lewis to give an indication of how long he has to go. I'm still a bit each way but there appears to be something there. Just needs two more pre-seasons on the weights before we can make a proper judgement IMO.

He's had three years so far for a long term prospect you'd think 5 years would be enough to test whether it has paid off.

Be nice to add another developing key position player onto the list this year. Thorp hopefuly.

Spot on. He was thrown right in the deep end to fast track his development - he was inexperienced and underweight. To play body on body when your giving up so much weight and strength is just stupid - you'd lose every time. He played off his man to give him some sort of chance.
Lets not forget croad got 8 (?) kicked on him by fevola, playing one out in th goal square is bloody hard - let alone for an underweight and vastly inexperienced player.

I think we need to give him some time to adjust to tempo of afl and get his body right. If I remember correctly at the start of last season brad sewell looked hopeless- just was too slow with his decision making and always got caught with the ball. Now 2 seasons later he's one of our better players.

Dawsons played only 14 games and most of them were probably him being fasttracked as a fb than on form. Hes only 20 and probably needs another 2 seasons to add another 10 kgs to his frame. Most fb's take a couple of years at least to come good so we need to be patient. More importanly he appears to have the attributes required - hes a good size at 195cm, is mobile and fairly quick for his size, hes aggressive, he is persistent and wants to be fb, and at bh level he;s shown good decision making and ability to spoil.

Look he may not ever turn into a gun FB, but the coaching staff have seen theres something there to work with - why else would they throw a young player in the deep end like they did? I reckon he'll surprise a few over the next year or two.

From reports from BH gilham struggles even more with the power fwds than dawson does. He's got better decison making and skills but not sure if hes got the frame to play fb long term. Reckon will be a good defender for us though

Man the way Fev was playin that day, not even Glass or Rutten coulda stopped him. If you take away the 3 or 4 marks/frees that Fev got the rest were just so flukey.
1. Hodgeys kick on the full, Fev shreds it from the boundary
2. Fevolas set shot from the pocket at the city end
3. Fevolas snap from the boundary at the city end
4. His soccer off the ground at the Punt Road end
5. The 2 50s helped
So really Croad only gave away 2-3 in my opinion.

Agree. Whilst Gilham can perform on the best forwards (Lucas), I'd like to see more of Dawson at full back next season. If he really struggles though, switch them around. Croad should always take the Gorilla though.

I'd like to see them both played in Round 1.

I guess the point being we judge dawson so harshly for having bags kicked on him but its hard to say how much is really his fault. We cut croad slack for givin away frees and his opponent kicking good goals but for dawson an underweight, and inexperienced player thrown in the deep end in a losing side any mistake makes him a dud.
I think the lewis comparison is a good one - lewis doesnt have the body or fitness yet to play full time in the midfield. Dawson of a similar age and playin a more demanding position doesnt yet have the body or experience to be a key defender.

Won't they end up as forwards as I posted in a response to my good friend HBF in your draft thread?

Dowler could be a bolter and play down back unlike Kennedy who isn't quick enough and too tall at 6'6".

From all reports, when Dowler played in the Under-18's and for Box Hill, he didn't look comfortable down back. Maybe after he's given a go back down there this here after he has a full Pre-Season, he can give us all an indication of where he'll play?
