Glad Tigers played Judd when only 1/4 fit

Re: How did Judd go?

It's just 1 loss mate, getting ahead of yourself.

Not to mention that all he needs to do is check his bank statement to realise he went to the right club for him... :p
His bank statement would have looked alright regardless of where he went as most clubs who were after him were prepared to throw sh1tloads of cash his way.Carltons list is still a long way from being decent and a few more losses like that and he will be wondering whether he made the right choice

judds greatest effect comes from the bottom of packs at crunch times in games. his flashy goalkicking and breaking from packs might be what got him on the highlight reel, but a hard ball get and a clearance when you are two points down, or an 9 possession quarter to drag you back into a game, is what makes him really great

even if he never gets his speed back, he will still be able to do that stuff.

will be interesting though, the eagles built their entire clearance play around him, blocking for him and such, it will be very interesting this year to see how both the eagles play without their gun and how judd plays without the high class support.

i can't see judd ever getting that trademark acceleration back... we haven't seen it for going on 3 years now... still a good in and under player, but no longer the best mid in the comp.

kerr is clearly the better player now, sit back and let the evidence unfold.

Judd will be playing like Judd if his groin stays ok in about round 9-10. I feel like a tool for believing the hype about Carlton their defence is still the worst in the league they have not improved that one iota. Maybe another priority pick this year and get a ready made defender? Seriously the debate about Judd is a bit irrelevant the defence is still a neccesary part of making finals footy that has not been fixed even Judd and co can't win every centre break.

Re: How did Judd go?

I couldn't give a stuff about Judd, and certainly not about Carlton, but I find this post amusing - mainly the bold. Judd was hailed by ALL Eagles supporters as the best footballer in the land, not to mention several suggestions of him being possibly the best ever. Few months later, Judd changes clubs, and all of a sudden WCE supporters claim they knew he was overrated etc. etc.?

Laughable.

He did alright tonight considering. He's clearly not close to 100% but still was effective. Showed tonight that if he can get back to full fitness, he's going to be lethal no matter what side he's playing in.

finally someone with a brain!

Let me get this straight, Judd still isn't 100% as a result of the injury he sustained at around midseason 2007?

I didn't miss an injury during his 2008 pre-season, did I? Because I'd be worried if Judd isn't 100% after 7 or 8 months.

Anyhow, Judd was okay tonight. Obviously injured but still showed great stuff in close and he made a lot of good decisions with his disposal.
he did not have his operation until late october and did not start running until late december......considering most players have had a solid two months under their belt by then, i think has done well to get to this stage.

Ask anyone who has had groin problems. They're with you for life. Any major injury is with you for life.

He wasn't fully fit, but at 100% he wont be near what he used to be.

He's not used to not having the ball palmed down to him by Cox, or fed out by Kerr. But he's still a really good player.
...all the injury experts on here make me laugh!:)

Re: How did Judd go?

Take the gloves down champ, wait till you see what he does under a HARD coach like Matthews. Travis won't last more than a week or 2 if he skirts 1 contest! At least watch him play for his new colours before posting that dribble!!
it is closer to the mark than all the doom and gloom dribble talk about judd on here!

Re: How did Judd go?

speaking of ignorance..
you sure about that "ALL" bit?
by eagles supporters you do mean the judd-loving media right?
I think you would have been suprised between 2005-2007 with eagles supporters opinions of him, there was more important players in our team than Judd. For a really passionate eagles fan (i.e. fan of the team) it was annoying that Judd was dubbed as some football god whilst others hardly got recognition. By the way, I'm not saying he wasn't a key player for us or that he wasn't great because he was, I just always found he was over-rated by many outside of eagles supporters and a few within that group. But hey, that's just my opinion based on what I know.

Anyway, on topic...as much as I dislike him and Carlton, he will get better as the year goes on and so will the team..early days people, early days.
not much obviously!

Definitely noticed him with an awkward gait in the last, when thrown forward. To me that indicates that something apart from match fitness is not right.

Coughlan struggled for a number of years with a similar injury after winning the Jack in 2003. He was also a young bloke who got thrown into the hard stuff from a very early age.

He did a couple of good things but he has not been his best for OVER a year now. He still cannot run. Forget the Brownlow counting, I have seen every Chris Judd game and he had lost pace early on in the season. Go have a look at round 1 against Sydney. Surely this is a big concern.

Judd when he was awesome very rarely got tackled. Tonight, Judd would have been one of the slowest on the field. He still has great football smarts and decent skills but can't burst away from packs and cannot chase. I saw many times tonight where he simply did not bother chasing. At the Eagles, Judd developed a great defensive game as well.

He is still a decent player but not the Chris Judd of two or three years ago. People have said that he will get better in a month or so and some parts of his game probably will but it has been a long time now so who's to say when (or if) it ever comes back.
sure its not fitness, which will duely arrive.......gee some of you rate hard on one performance.......all f..king no all experts!

been a long time since what mate......this is his second full on hit out since a groin operation late last year.....give the bloke a chance.

champions have the knack of biting people on the arse when they are written off!

Re: How did Judd go?

Considering WC ran him into the ground , it's a credit to him that he is out there already .

Get a clue.

Then post.

Actually dont, waste of space.

Tonight he looked exactly like he did for West Coast in the latter part of last season when his groin was flaring up.

Good for the first half and then the pain of injury catches up the more he runs and he can't do more than a jog by the end of the game.

Not once was there a pack-bursting run out of the contest, his pace is still not there (particularly over the first 10m), the evasive sidestep now looks a memory from tapes pre-2006 and every time he kicked longer than 25m he seemed uncomfortable.

Considering he has undergone surgery for the injury and is months into recovery, I'd be worried if I was a Carlton supporter that he may be blighted with this to some extent for the rest of his career.

Either Judd will never recover to the player he was or the Carlton hierachy have cynically rushed him in far too early purely as an exercise to gain more memberships early on in the season by riding upon the wave of media-hype.

Worst case scenario for the Blues is that the injury is permanent - but even then they still have a very good player that can only improve their team and provide leadership to the younger members of the squad.

I believe that he will have to modify his game somewhat to accomodate any restrictions caused by his injury - because with it he is no longer the explosive, agile, pack-breaking player that he used to be.

Instead I see him taking a role similar to what Robert Harvey has done in recent seasons for the Saints - wins the hard ball in the contest and passes off to teamates before being tackled, and then moving off into space to play as a link-man to build the attack, using his refined skills and ability to read the game to the best effect.

Not having a go at Chris Judd by any means, he will always be a great player; nor am I having a go at Carlton - I just don't think they should be getting caught up with all this media hype over him, he is still just one player - one that is definately unfit currently at that.

Upon this form (which is just one game, so yes I know it amounts to little sofar), the trade for Pick.3 (Masten) may well turnout to be a nice piece of business by the West Coast backroom staff - and that is without mentioning Josh Kennedy.

Fully agree. His explosive pace is just not there and he seemed to be chasing people at half pace tonight.Dont know why he gave everyone the feeling he was right to play earlier in the week when he is clearly struggling.Needs to rest it to get it right otherwise he risks doing more damage

Are you a doctor? I suspect not.

The point is even Judd said he'll take a while to get back to his absolute best. The club wouldn't risk him.

Fact is the only thing he's short on is match fittness and the only way to improve that is by playing matches.

With regards to his performace I was pretty happy. Very clean, won some clearances and delivered some brilliant passes into the foward line. Barely made a mistake. Yes his acceleration wasn't there yet but he was still breaking tackles and that isn't the only facet to his game.

That is exactly what was said by both Judd and West Coast last year and look what happened there.

I wouldn't believe anything in regards to his potential fitness until it is seen on the playing field - its too much of an unknown to be saying that he is on his way back when it may be otherwise.

Judd wasnt too bad , and a coupla other of the tankers went ok, Murphy was impressive!

If i was a blues supporter Judd wld be the least of my worries, it would be the rest of the duds running around in the team tht wld be pissing me off

A lot of people saying his acceleration wasn't there. Maybe it wasn't at his peak levels but he was still quicker off the mark than anyone near him on plenty of occasions and ran out of plenty of packs. Kicked long and straight more than once too. Obviously not completely fit, but geez people are overstating it, I'd be a happy camper if I was a Carlton fan.

It's obvious he missed having a decent ruckman and the amount of blocking the other West Coast mids did for him though.
