Goddard kicking ball at crowd members?

I was at the SCG once watching Freo throw away another 3 quarter time lead. I was up the back of the stands holding my 18 month old son who was asleep whilst my wife was sitting next to my 3 year old son down near the fence. Freo have a shot at goal from the pocket and as the ball leaves the boot my lovely wife jumps up onto the aisle to start waving her freo flag and get her head on TV which she does so succesfully but if you look closely at the footage there is a 3 year old kid flattened behind her covered in coke being attended to by some friendly Swans supporters.............................
LMFAO good to see her priorities are straight anyway:thumbsu:

I would never not watch the ball during the game, though, I'd always be ready to protect my sons from a ball flying in, and I wouln't blame a player who kicked it through the goals - that's their job, after all. One of my sons got hit in the prematch at the MCG a couple of years ago, but it came over the side of the net and I wasn't as focused as I am during the game.

That's it. I always watch the ball and am prepared to swat it away or mark it if it comes near my family. Pre-game is harder of course because there are balls coming in from everywhere and now and then one goes over the top. Sometimes if you are in the front row, you can get hit if the ball hits a part of the net with a bit of give in it. I'm more switched on during pre-game than anything.

Yes there is a risk of getting hit by a ball if you sit behind the goals, there's also a risk of getting hit by a car when you go driving. But if someone deliberately plows their car into yours, do you not seek damages from their insurance company?

I'm not saying they will go after Goddard, or Goddard deliberately attempted to hit an 8yo in the head. But the intent to kick the ball into the freo fans was there.

An apology at least and he'll probably get a lecture from the AFL.

Some disingenuous responses in this thread, coupled with shit analogies. Cricketers hit the ball when they're standing some 60-70M from the boundary, giving spectators plenty of time to get out of the way. No-one had a chance of avoiding that kick from the middle of the goal square. Most players running into an open goal either boot it to the upper levels of the stand or dribble it into the fence. Hardly ever does it get belted into the crowd behind the goals.

I was at the other end of the ground, but it was obvious what he'd done, and that he intended to do it. Goddard's a great player, was BOG yesterday IMO, and he's good to watch because he's one of the most skilful players in the league. He didn't need to kick a flat torp into the crowd, and it was no accident that he did so.

Concussion for an 8YO is no laughing matter. If it was my boy I'd be absolutely filthy about it.

I'm not calling for nets behind the goals, or any other sanitisation of the game by the way. If he was under pressure / being tackled / falling over / etc. I'd have no problem with it, and I don't think anyone else would either. It was a shit act from a guy who I've always though comes across as a pretty good bloke.

Was he concussed? The photos look like Dad has laid him down to recover while continuing to watch the game. Should have been at a first aid station at the very least.

Saw it in real time and thought immediately that he was trying to cause damage. He put everything he could muster into that kick and there's very few with his penetration.

For those saying he had to kick through the footy, of course he did, but that doesn't equate to spearing the shit out of the footy. Hell, had his ball drop had been slightly off, it'd have veered off to the side.

Nothing to come off it but it doesn't look good and his intention was obvious.

While I am convinced he did not intend to hit the little boy, I also believe that he did intend to kick into the area.

I would be furious if that were my son (and I certainly don't like to be told where I should or should not sit with my kids - no parent in Australia should have to expect his kid to be hit by a ball when a player walks towards an open goal).

I am a huge fan of Goddard and I hope he does the right thing to contact the boy and apologise in person.

Does anyone know what quarter this occured in? I've got the game on IQ and would like to form my own opinion rather than rely on opinions and heresay.

Vote against nets at the footy!

Last quarter, Dawson handballed to him and he ran in and pumped it low and hard into the cheersquad, not necessarily at the 8 year old but there was intent to either scare them or make them dive.

Even watching it on tv I knew it would come up today.

:eek::eek::eek:

I'm speechless

OK then!
Who is to blame and what should the outcome be?
Anybody?

This happens a few times a year, it's only because a child was hit this time that a big deal is being made of it. With the amount of times players have missed dribbling the ball through the goals of late I'd rather a player drill it to ensure the goal is kicked. If people continue to carry on over what is a essentially a non issue we'll end up seeing nets put up behind the goals permanently.

Do we really want something like this removed from our game?

What would have happened if someone booted the ball at the Melbourne cheer squad and hit Jim?
