Goddard kicking ball at crowd members?

Yep I noticed him really drill a headhunter into first row during the game - hadn't realised it was the Freo cheersquad but that would make sense.

If you go to the footy and sit directly behind the goals, there's a chance you might get a whack on the scone. Occupational hazard.

This one

I was sitting near the cheer squad in the front row behind the goals at the Brisbane v Carlton game and Setanta O'hAilpin sent one whizzing past my head when he goaled. Hardly think he is trying to take out Carlton supporters. Benefit of the doubt.

Probably spells it backwards after looking at the inprint on his forhead in the mirror....

anyone looking at him would see it backwards. he looks in the mirror and it would look right.

might be about time they brought in those foam balls they sell in service stations.

only solution i think.

I can relate to BG. We have a par 3 18th at our local golf course - if you hit your tee shot long, there's a chance it can run into the car park. I take the opportunity to deliberately target the cars of a few members that annoy me. The PC freaks at the club think this wrong!

This is a complete non issue. If the parents of the kid don't want to risk their children being hit in the head, they shouldn't be sitting behind the goals.

It's very simple.

Goddards a bit of a hot head, but these are the risks of sitting behind the goals.

Probably meant to make a point at the time, though I doubt he wanted to injure a kid.

Regardless, I doubt he AFL start policing the way goals are kicked.

Un-necersary, but there ya go.

AFL'S new mandate - BYO helmet if you are sitting near the goal posts :p

It was a fantastic game, played in the right spirit for an AFL game. Except this incident.

I am on record complaining about my own supporters throwing something on the field last year and pointing out the demarcation between players and supporters. The players should demand and get protection from spectators. Spectators should be aware that the ball can go into the crowd and need to be aware of it.

This incident was different in that Goddard drilled the ball hard and low and I will suggest deliberately which is not the norm, nor should it be. A disgraceful low act that has no part in the game.

For the record, he played brilliantly, as he often does against us.

This.

Why is this even an issue? He drilled a goal, if you can't handle the thought of getting hit with the ball, it's pretty simple really. DON'T SIT ANYWHERE NEAR THE BIG STICKS!!

harden up princess

Come here and say that hard man

These incidents are often lightning rods for some supposed hard cases to show just how hard they are.

Comments such as the one above and 'won't somebody think of the children' are all pulled out as if to show that there still remains a level of tough guys that won't bow down to public pressure to behave in, well.....a civilised manner.

I think we as supporters should behave a certain way and so should the players. Not too much to ask.

Poor form from Goddard, yes.

But please, take a deep breath, count to ten. It's not that big a deal. I wonder, if it had hit a fat middle-aged Freo supporter in the gut, not a 10 year old kid in the chest, would all this be happening?

Also, I'm pretty sure the Fremantle CheerSquad are no angels. Ripping chit through Milney all night with disgusting comments. Seems Goddard was sticking up for his mate.

Don't forget the Freo CheerSquad have an interesting history with Goddard, too. It's fair to say they went a rabid shade of purple when they found out his brother was in jail.

At the risk of sounding like Mark Webber, that sounds like the way to a nanny state. The boy would have been protected by a net - easier than asking an AFL player to pull a goal kick to not endanger the crowd.

There's more risk of being injured in after game kick to kick. So that should be banned, too.

Players are getting injured so maybe we should go to 45 min halves. Or wet the ground. Or get them to do mandatory warm ups. Or get them to wear protective gear.

How about we take our chances and just enjoy the game?

It's too late. You sound like Mark Weber.

I think we all accept normal risks when going to the footy. I don't want nets. I don't want any changes.

It is not normal for a player to drill the ball like he did. It is almost irrelevant that a boy was hit. I just don't think we want players doing that every week, because it could be a lot more serious and it is not necessary.

People sit behind the goals every week, players do not always do what Goddard did.

Didn't some woman try (unsuccessfully) to sue the AFL/Subiaco a couple of years back after being it by a ball?

This is ridiculous. The last thing that we should be expecting to be going through a footballer's head as he's kicking a goal is to not kick it too hard and to avoid the crowd (which, incidentally, is situated ALL AROUND the field). He has every right to kick the goal however he wants. I am amazed people actually care about this, and they aren't just disgruntled Freo supporters. Honestly, it's unfortunate that a kid was hurt as a result, but he was sitting behind the goals at an AFL game  God forbid a football actually might land in the crowd.

If you sit there, it should occur to you that a ball may come at you in the crowd. What are they meant to do, honestly? Can't believe this is an issue.
