Goddard

Its a great pick up so long as Goddard comes to play. Hes looked completely non-plussed for a lot of the last two seasons. If he can find that form that made him close to the best player in the game in 09-10 then he will be the best pick up this off season.

Good move by Essendon

Goddard won't be squeezing anyone out. If we get him he will well & truely be shoving out a player like Dyson or Lonergan who have had ample opportunity to cement a spot. If there is anyone on our list who is so mentally fragile that getting rid of mid aged fringe players causes them animosity then thats great because we can move them on as well. Any professional team should embrace the opportunity to strengthen that team. If you have people who are afraid of upping the competition then again these are people who will not take your team forward.

Goddard is a no brainer & only trolls could think otherwise. He's not going to single handedly fix all Essendon's problems but he will improve the list. Even if he doesn't play much mid he still fills a massive need we have for a backline clearance player. Anyone who has actually watched us with any type of football knowledge should see that outside of Fletch we have lacked a quality kicker on the backline. Hardingham, Hooker & Hibberd far too often turn the ball over & with Heppel moving into the midfield we have desperately needed another quality ball user down back.
Agree with every word.
There's definitely the potential there that we could be over-paying him in (specifically) his last year of this deal; but balance that out against the reality that we have been over-paying average players the last 8 years and would probably be continuing to without Goddard.

For 800 a season you'd want more than an average CHF.

We have an All Australian premiership CHF who in a bad year kicked 59 goals including 9 in finals and topped the contested marks.

Its not about the player, its about the role. If Goddard is to play midfield then it wont give Essendon the leg speed they need and will just add another heavy slow body to the rotation. If hes going to play half back its a lot of money for a sweeper. If hes going to play forward its a lot of money for somebody who hasnt spent a lot of time forward and is not a renowned goalkicker.

Along with Prismall, Lonergan, possibly Reimers, probably Dyson and the final nail in Slattery's coffin.
And that brilliant work ethic and team spirit we've had all these years, the consistency of effort, all of that will be shaken to the core and have to be rebuilt.

And all we'll have to show for it will be introducing Goddard, and two very talented first round draft picks, and whoever else we draft/recruit into the side.

Will we ever recover?

lonergen is ok isnt he? why will he be delisted?

Gee i wonder how he will sleep at night worrying about that upcoming fixture

Given he'll have to face Slammin' Sammy Wright again, probably not well. Didn't do too well on the boy from Katamatite last time.

But remember, Goddard is a player that can do all of the above, and do it well.

That's why us as Essendon supporters are excited- We haven't had a big name come to the club in a very long time.

At least Goddard has shown he can play decent footy post June. Even if the last time he did it was two years ago.

I have no idea what that even means but 700k for a sweeper (and thats all Goddard has done in teh past few years) is a lot of money.

Due to being shit for a long time we are overpaying players such as Dyson, Prismall, Slattery ect ect. So paying 700k means a few of our below par players get the chop prematurely whereas at Collingwood if you were to sign a new player for that sought of coin it would probably destroy the whole clubs pay structure.

700k is a lot of money, full stop. But, for the 4329th time...
Prismall on 300k. Monfries on close to $400k. Slatts & Lonergan similar ball park.
Who's value there? Hell, who deserves a spot out of them, even in an average side like us?

Wins the hard ball as well as anyone we've got, but slow as a wet week, no good on the boot & totally, one-dimensional. Replaceable.

Fair enough. You'd still be better off throwing money at a midfielder, though. Or a key defender.

And if Goddard comes to Essendon we will have a bloke who averaged more footy than all bar 2 on our list in what many here are saying was a bad year for him. How much does Hodge get at Hawthorn - doesn't he play a similar role as Goddard has been? Hawthorn spent 2 1st round picks for Burgoyne who plays mainly off half back. I would have thought that a Collingwood person should recognise the importance of the drive that players like Shaw & Harry O provide as well as lament the significance the loss of Leon had on your side this year.

The reality is that Goddard is a class player. He may have 3 years in him he may have 6 (plenty round here wrote off Fletch far to early). He may play a HBF role at Essendon he may play a completely different role. Nobody knows what will happen. All we do know is that he has for several years been amongst the best players in the league & Essendon have an opportunity to hopefully add him to our list without having to sacrifice draft picks to get it done. In short its an opportunity that we have to pursue & the same trolls would criticise us if we didn't.

Can you please tell us exactly which class mids are currently out of contract & looking to come to us via free agency? I would have thought the club would be well aware of our need for mids & be pursuing all options but then again they aren't as insightful as bigfooty so I'm sure they'd appreciate your imput:rolleyes:
