Southport Sharks claim the return of AFL football to Carrara and the growing supporter base on the Gold Coast will prove it is ready to enter the national competition.

Sharks chief executive Paul Wyatt said his club had the membership base to make the step up into the AFL and the financial resources to recruit and develop top quality administrators, football staff and players.

"We're ready, financially we're ready," he said yesterday.

"And the improved facilities at Carrara gives us the ability to show the games here on the coast."

The Sharks have had an application for an AFL licence with the league since 1996.

Any thoughts? I myself don't like their name, but then again they accepted the Dockers name so who knows.

Their finances and infrastucture may be ready, but is there enough AFL standard players being produced in QLD for 1 team yet, let alone 2?

When that happens then it will be time for another club in QLD, and they can start it from scratch.

Why is this relevant, when any second Queensland team will be drawing players via the National Draft? There is no stipulation that any AFL club must recruit from their home state.

Of course there is'nt, but do we need another team draining players from football player producing states into non-football player producing states.

Why not wait until QLD are producing its fair share of players instead of draining them from other states.

Ok I've just redrafted a reply to your comments 3 times, with no satisfactory result. So I'll keep it short and sweet.....

Are you for real???

Junior footy is currently booming in QLD.

ATM there are only 3,700 senior players.

But there are nearly 20,000 junior players in the pipeline.

By the time these kids are all grown up they'll be looking for an AFL club to play in anyway and that should coincide with the first few years of any new Gold Coast club.

Having 2 successful clubs in QLD will only further increase the junior participation pool.

Anyway, talented Queenslanders are already popping up in AFL clubs around the country. They deserve a chance to at least stay in their state.

.

Good sounds like it won't be far away then. Just asking the question.

You are kidding... right? I fail to see what the concern is.

If there is a surplus of AFL standard players in football player producing states, why can't some play in Queensland? The AFL competition is not a state vs. state competition.

I ask again. Why is this such a concern? In my view it's not even an issue.

The original squad is also usually made up of almost all local players. Such as when the dockers recruited heavily from claremont when they began.

Southport, should they come in as a stand alone entity, (and at this stage it looks like being through a relocation and so will take on the relocated club's current list) which will make the following comments redundant.

Assuming a 16 team competition and a team exiting the competition, Southport entering the AFL in it's own right could assemble a 37-38 man squad from scratch in a variety of ways. For example (in order of occurence):

- Priority selection of exiting team's players (8-9 picks)
- Local Qld priority zone players (3-4 picks)
- National Draft (10-11 picks)...has #1 pick and then #17 and so on.
- Pre-Season Draft (4-5 picks)...
- National uncontracted player selections/signings (7-8 picks)...after pre-season draft
- Rookie draft (6-7 extra players)

Reiwoldt couldn't wait to leave for the bright lights of the big smoke. He wouldn't come home.

I hope that the Sharks do get a place in the competition.
Gee, a fully viable, financially sound club.
Wouldn't have to worry about wasting money on CBF payments to them at least.

You are joking right? I think SE Qld needs another AFL team in the next 10 years due to the large number of junior players coming through and the fact that the titans have got a RL team. Also the population is exploding, primarily due to a large number of Victorians who have seen the light and moved north.

We may not need another team draining players as you put it - the Gold Coast Kangaroos would do alright.

Record amount of draftees seem to be coming out of QLD every year ..... apparently a couple of top 10 prospects this year...... plenty of juniors and AFL QLD has a ace up its sleeve in the potential of PNG which WILL produce AFL standard players in the not to distant future.

Southport has plenty of money and there seems to be a fair amount of support for rules on the GC........ the time is nearly right and the admittance of a NRL team on the coast should not be a deterrant.

Basically when people argue againts a new team in either Sydney or The Gold Coast, it is becuase those people fear it somehow.

EG: have you ever noticed that the people who do not want a new team on the Gold Coast are supporters of a Melbourne team who are likely to be relocated there ???

Similarly many Swans supporters don't want a second Sydney team, becuase they fear the competition to their own side !!!

The thing is that blind freddy can see that a team Playing out of Carerra and a second Sydney team are both absolutly necesseray for the continued and successful expansion of the code.

But then again blind freddy aint a Roos supporter!!!

Hahahaha :)

The stadium is still a crap hole by AFL standards.

They need a real stadium out there in QLD that can hold a decent crowd with room for growth but nobody is going to sink the $$$ into it when there is no football club there so it is a catch 22 situation, not going to get an AFL team survive playing 11 games at a stadium like that and not going to get the stadium built unless there is a team there.

Whatever the scenario, someone is going to have to produce a massive bucket of cash that is going to be needed to prop-up a side there for 10-20 years before it gets up to speed.

Given the AFL's willingness to bend over forwards for the Swans that is not entirely out of the question for a side in the northern states.

Isnt it funny how the North Melbourne supporters get so defensive??? I don't know about you but im sure the Queensland Gov and Gold Coast City Council etc. Would be glad to pitch in with a fair bit of money to upgrade Carara to hold 30,000 or so which would be more than suitable.
