Great hows our Academy players supposed to develop with no senior experience around them, will that mean our Neafl team will be a bunch of 18 years olds plus Josh Gore and Oea etc or will they allow overage top up players
My guess players not in the best 22-24 will play scratch matches against Lions most probably. It makes sense as you don't want them to catch virus outside the clubs strict protocols and ruin AFL season completely.

Let's see what happens when someone gets a positive test eventually.

That poses problems in itself , developing players like Murtagh, Towey and Conroy etc will find it difficult to get a kick against the Lions who have greater depth and really play a "keepings off type chip game" which deprives the opposition of much ball

There is no good solution. It's a s**t situation. I can imagine rotating players in scratch matches. Those players you mentioned will probably be gone next year if lists are to be cut.

Personally, I will be happy to watch any games, no crowds, changed rules. Just missing footy, even when watching Suns is usually painful :)

Another option is no NEAFL team.

The Northern academies can take part in the academy series and NAB League like last year.

The reserves can play against the other three northern AFL teams. Don’t forget all four clubs have U19 academy players they can use as top ups for the reserve teams.

Think Neafl is gone now the AFL teams cant participate, all 4 AFL teams wont be able to play practice matches against each other till the Qld border reopens.

For the moment its us against the Lions and considering we are the most injury prone team (only 45 possibles could take the field tomm out of 51 and we only had 11 afl listed last time we played you in neafl) I would hope our 19s and some 18s ie Davies are allowed otherwise we wont be able to field a team.

The problem is all top ups would have Covid tests and quarantine like the listed players and i dont even know if academys exist atm.
Covid 19 literally has been an atomic bomb on sport everywhere

SUNS football manager Jon Haines has confirmed that the club won’t field a NEAFL team in 2020 after the AFL yesterday barred listed players from competing in state league competitions this year.

The AFL issued a statement to clubs yesterday declaring that the part-time nature of such competitions would prevent AFL-listed players from adhering to strict medical protocols that will be in place this season.

Haines and the Suns remain confident they will still be able to prepare all listed players for AFL football and will even explore the possibility of scratch matches against cross-town rivals to ensure players maintain match fitness.

The other thing I just thought of , for this season - no Neafl or Nab League means no flight costs, match fees and hotel accomodation bills at a time everyone is cutting their costs.
Adelaide and Port just pulled out out the SAFL
There is going to be a shortened NAB League from discussions on the draft board. And the APS schools are trying to get their competition going in term 3.

Academy kids represent just as much of a risk to AFL players as do state league players.

So thinking about it, it’s unlikely academy kids will fill in, in the reserve teams.

We might see some 16 aside games, or even AFLX games for the reserves.

As for academy kids, they can still play NEAFL or QAFL if those leagues get going.

Have been told that Neafl wont happen, guess with an academy kid they have more control over his movements than playing against a plumber playing for Aspley for example,
Would hard to see queenlander teams playing in the nab league with the Qld premier saying no interstate travel till August , think Academy top ups is the best way for kids like Davies and Crozier (Bris) to get a game this season

I’d have to visit the NEAFL page on BF to check the latest news. Read it last week, and it certainly sounded like plans were underway for a season in some form.

Admittedly things are changing by the day and week in all aspects of society though.

I’m not sure how an academy kid going to school or university, with a part time job is much different to a plumber playing for Aspley. Well apart from a plumber sticking his arms down all ungodly manner of places.

The hits keep coming, we are apparently telling 40 staff involved in AFLW and Academy that they don't have a role this year due to soft cap restrictions.
Have real fear the academies may fold and each of the northern sides may be given zones and they play with local clubs,

Would say that GC participation in the NAB league is unlikely and that only the players selected for the Allies squad may play rep footy, sad times

Would a restructured QAFL benefit from having Aspley Redland and Southport joining instead of having the NEAFL exist? I know Canberra would be better off..
The NEAFL has been a bit off the last few years as a couple teams dropped away

That was my thinking. Going back to a state based competition. The Brisbane academy kids would be spread amongst the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast clubs. Southport would dominate with the majority of Gold Coast academy kids.

Also, 12 team competition, so a full home and away season.

Could probably send the listed players from the Lions and Gold Coast who don’t make the senior teams to play for different QAFL teams. Similar to what happens in the NRL.

In regards to the U18 comps.

Im hearing that U18 Nab League will become an U19 competition next year and each team would be aligned with a state side.

The club I'd assume would be very keen to retain the Academy.

It depends on what you consider being "better off". From a Suns perspective, I'm confident it would be a fantastic outcome to have Southport back in the local state league and effectively allowed to develop juniors again. It was a proven breeding ground for many AFL talents up until the NEAFL was established and I wholeheartedly believe that would happen again and we would constantly have high level juniors coming through our academy each year who are Southport juniors (just like the old days).

What happens as a result of that outcome is the weakening of Palm Beach, Labrador, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach because Southport will definitely poach talented juniors like they used to (see Nick Riewoldt's switch from Broady to the Sharks or Marcus Ashcroft's switch from Surfers to Southport).

Is that a better situation than what we currently have? I think it probably is. Our number one asset in terms of Gold Coast footy was stripped away from us when the NEAFL began and we finally have an opportunity to get it back. Bring Southport back to the QAFL!

apparently the Academys are outside the soft cap so will survive

I meant for local league development..

With Southport they can only have 25/30 players so players out of that will have to play QAFL reserves or move to other rival clubs which strengthens the development of local players

Think the Qld borders will be closed to August if the Premier has her way, this means Neaf and Nab league will have a window of three months (aug, sept, oct).

Given finals would be a month, think Neafl is dead in the water, Aspley , Southport and Redlands would be too strong for the Qafl sides so may have to sit out 2020 at the top level and their players farmed out to local clubs for rest of the season.

Nab League could possibly run August with national champs Sept (though McGowan (WA) could easy stuff that up with his ego.

Also believe that an AFL reserves comp or at least between GWS, Sydney, GC and Bris could run August , Sept where top ups will come from the academy players not playing in Nab league / championships

Other option is that they bring the squad number up to 60 (nine academy top ups , ensure they have Covid and flu shots and quarantine) and play reserve scratch matches against the other 5 teams in the Hubs

If there’s no neafl this year then you can put a line through it for the future..

Soon as you have no swans giants lions suns it’s useless without the afl propping it up

Now that the four teams are in Hubs on the GC, think we should plaY SCRATCH MATCHES AGAINST EACH OF THEM,

Also would propose that we bring in our best 6 draft prospects as top ups for these games(most would be students who could learn online) to see who translates the best to senior footy. If the other teams are allowed to bring in families this should not be a problem if our academy players are flu vacinated and test for Covid 19

Otherwise with the Nab league in doubt they will not get the required top level exposure (last thing we need is more speculative recruiting) . Budarick, Martyn, Cumberland and Coleman were all selected on their Neafl form (and top of impressive Allies form, bar Coleman who wasnt allowed to play) towards the end of last year

So if you were to chose the 6 gold coast affiliated juniors that are potentially draft able who would you pick?

I'd say
Davies (GC)
Jeffries (NT)
Lake (NT)
Gore
Ace
Johnston

Does that seem reasonable?
Any other suggestions?

Definitely agree. Have our 2s play scratch matches against the SA & WA reserves teams for the first four weeks of the restarted season and continue to rotate until they leave QLD. Hopefully by that point they will have worked out some kind of arrangement with the NEAFL or even just a situation where we rotate reserves games between the Giants, Swans and Lions. If restrictions are lifted even more, the AFL could do us a favour by scheduling our reserves to play again Melbourne-based clubs whenever our seniors head to Victoria in what will likely be a preview of the 2021 'Eastern AFL' competition.

Hopefully our U18s get to play a few games against NAB League teams + the National Championships. I think that's about the best we can hope for in terms of our academy this year.

You might be the only team able to field a full reserve team for the whole season.
