I'm going to get a set, they're 40-60% the price of other irons, and most things I watch the data is they're often as good or close to the irons twice the cost.

Only issue is being online only, you've got no choice but to to buy them blind or hope you know someone with them.

I'm just trying to figure out if I go and get a shaft and lie fitting and then buy them custom, or just get them off the rack.

Their shaft options are somewhat limited.

Get fitted. Worth the expense

Who would you go to for a fitting for online clubs (genuine question)?

You could just go to Club Champion. Pay for the fitting and you can apply that to the online spec.

Realistically, there are only a few factors:
Swing speed and “skill” determine which of the(usually) three models of any manufacturer is going to suit.

Then it’s just shaft length, lie angle and grip thickness.

That’s going to do the job for 90+% of people.

Just saw an unblemished demo PING G430 Max 3w in the pro shop for $389. Might have to grab it to match my driver.

Just on lie angles, is that something that typically changes if your swing changes?

I remember years ago I had a fitting and was fitted for +2 upright, but I've been working on things and my swing is different since then

It’s about the only thing you can test on your own. Put a vertical line down a ball with a marker, place it so you will hit it at 90 degrees and the angle of the mark it leaves on the club will tell you the story.

The kickpoint podcast has a good little summary of this.

I changed clubs after about 4/5 years because club head speed had slowed. Lie angle had not changed (3 degrees up), regardless of the amount lessons, practice and tinkering I have done. So much so the fitter said...these were fitted expertly (knowing quite well it was himself that built them lol.)

Also I think lie angle is a measurement at impact...and that part of the swing is happening very fast and I believe is probably fairly hard to change it for us mere mortals (mid to high handicappers).

I'm keen to do this sharpie on a ball test when I next can

I ended up pulling the trigger today on the 245s. Proper fitting at Drummond. Figured going long with the 7 iron will be better than continuing to jar my wrist (which has a plate and 8 screws from breaking it last year) with my current fully forged Mizuno gamers. So pumped for them to arrive and take them out.

Congrats- easily the best looking irons in their category.

The fitter is trying to fit a set of clubs to cover your faults (typically over the top/early extension). Disastrous.

I’ve always found lie angle to be a bit of a waste of time, especially if you’re of average height.

Every golfer should have it checked - in case they need an adjustment- but it’s not something that’s likely to change.

Current set i have been hitting okay are standard lie, so I do wonder what actually difference it would make. Hard to tell without getting a few clubs to take onto the range or course. A dozen shots in a fitting sim isn't enough imo
