My first and probably only post and have decided to post this as I have been so inspired by the quality of some of the other topics posted here by the blind and deaf pies fans.
So why are Collingwood supporters so deluded that they believe that their team is the most successful football team in the world when the truth of the matter is that they are the laughing stock of the AFL. They hang their hat on the successful period that happened over 60 years ago.
It is a fact that the cold pies have only won 1 flag in 46 years and only 3 in the last 68 years. The lions have achieved in the last 3 years what it has taken Collingwood 68 years to achieve. No wonder so many pies supporters have a massive chip on their shoulder.
It is a statical fact that if they make a GF then they only have a 36% of winning. This is unbelievable in a 2 team game and is not an indication of a successful club but rather the opposite. How many living pies fans have seen more than 1 premiership win by their side? It is every teams dream to play the pies on the last Saturday in September as they have a two thirds chance of winning every time. Even the fluke in 1990 happened in October.
But pies fans let me tell you they are many opposition clubs that are really pleased to see your lot make the granny. Argh the memories of back pocket player Neil Crompton following his rover opponent down the ground to kick the winning goal in 1964. Or Barry Breen coming from nowhere to score the winning point in 1966. And who could forget Carlton coming from 44 points down at half time to win in 1970. Then there was North Melbourne coming from well behind in 1977 to have a draw and then win the following week. Also the combined efforts of Carlton and Richmond to inflict 3 successive GF losses on the pies in 1979 to 1981. In fact the tigers absolutely kicked the crap out of them but it was even better to see Wayne Harmes glorious piece of play when he knocked the ball from the boundary to his team mate and once again see the pies piped at the siren. Of cause, it was just wonderful to see the Lions let the pies get to within 2 kicks in 2002 and let the magpie faithful think that next year it was all just going to happen for them but Brissie just creamed them. Will never forget the memory of watching Shaw ******** his pants and then Malthouse sooking after the game. Gee pies, thanks for the memories.
Pies supporters try to downplay the lion’s success by constant reference to the SC but ignore the advantages they have over other clubs (especially dogs, roos, cats etc). The successful years they had happened so long ago but even those years are tarnished. They played in a smaller suburban comp and only had to hop on to a tram to attend all games except for a train trip to Geelong once a year at the most. Their players were well looked after by the crim John Wren (read Power and Glory) and with all the handouts from him and their famous coach Jock McHale (who let them have a free rein of the Abbotsford brewery) they received benefits far in excess of the current SC benefits. In the years that they won 4 in a row they were the beneficiary of favourable rules that put them into the GF without having to earn the right by winning finals.
It is especially amusing to read how some of their fans try and link Collingwood to the true powerhouse clubs of Carlton and Essendon. These clubs have not only won more premierships than Collingwood but more importantly they have won them on a regular basis. Clinging to achievements of the early part of the last century whilst ignoring the failures on the past 68 years is actually very sad. Since the AFL only commenced in 1990 they in fact have only won one flag in the present competition. Lions have 3, Eagles, Bombers and Crows 2 etc. 14 years since your last flag so only 32 more years until your next. Bad luck Bucks, should have stayed with Brissie. The thought of him leaving Brissie to play with a team that was going to be a finals success never fails to bring a smile to my face.
I especially find mirth in their constant whining about the salary cap. At the end of the day their spending is not far behind Brisbane and in fact total club expenditure on players and support staff is actually higher. The Collingwood coaches etc are actually the highest paid in the league. The pies supporters believe that if you pay more for players then you have the best and will win. So the logic is that Brisbane has won the past 3 cups due to the SC. But if that is the case why have they never managed to finish on top of the ladder. Also it is strange how Carlton has one of the highest TPP in recent years while Port has had one of the lowest yet they are at opposite ends of the ladder. Certainly defies logic doesn’t it pies. But don’t let facts get in the way of your emotional whining.
Anyway since the pies coaches are paid the most it follows that they must have the best coaches in the AFL. Yeah right.
But the question is why are the pies so unsuccessful and have suffered from the collywobbles for most of the lifetime of all living supporters. In my opinion it is due to the many one-eyed and ignorant supporters who have a narrow view of all things concerning football. Big footy is full of them but for a really good laugh to and have a look at Nicks bulletin board. Black and white is the clubs right colours because that is how they see every issue. The black and white army think that every player who puts on a Collingwood jumper is a champion and they worship the players as if they were some hero. The fact of the matter is that many of these players are duds who would not get a game at most other clubs. Buckley is a good average player who does not deserve to even tie the bootlaces of Hird and Voss. The army can lift the players to play above their ability in a lot of home and away games but when the finals come they are found out. This has been the case for many many years and mostly likely will continue to be the case.
