Good players who never went home and played interstate for their entire careers

Different circumstances and a different time I guess, but Mark Bairstow went from South Freo to Geelong and finished up there. Brian Taylor never actually played senior footy in his home state, playing his entire career in Victoria.
These possibly don't count though.

Mark Bairstow is an interesting one, went home, home to Lake Grace (not South Freo)
In his 3rd season Bairstow played in the epic losing 1989 grand final against Hawthorn and achieved All Australian status for a second time.

Commitment to the family farm saw Mark Bairstow walk away from the AFL in 1990. He played in another losing Grand Final for Lake Grace but was coaxed back to Geelong the following year.

I meant more that they returned because (some) of their careers as top-level footballers were over

Well yes, but it didn't read that way.;)

Mat Richardson, Devonport to Richmond has stayed in Melbourne.

Peter Hudson played at Glenorchy, went back to Hawthorn for the 1977 season, finished his footy career at Glenorchy again in 1979. He ended up back in Melbourne after a while as his son Paul had his career in the AFL & a family.

Royce Hart, recruited from Clarence u19's!. He finished footy at Richmond & some 'coaching', retired to Tassie & the quiet life.

Now I'm not very old, but I don't think the homesickness was as rampant as it currently is in the AFL, with most players eventually getting home or to where they want to be.

Dangerfield, Judd and countless other champion players eventually made it home as it was probably more desirable and practical.

This thread isn't about spud players who play interstate.

This is about the champions who could've played anywhere they wanted, but instead chose to stick it out interstate. Jon Brown and Pavlich spring to mind, but were there any others?

You raise a good point.

AFL players are the biggest mummy's boys in world sport.

There are only 3 London clubs in the EPL out of 20 so the chances of a London kid playing in the EPL 'at home' are very slim.

The NFL or NBA? Forget about it. Wont happen. Always going to play away from your home.

Tennis? Live your entire career in a Hotel and in an Airport.

But lets look at a few players who have moved city and stayed away from 'home' for their entire careers:

Simon Black
Nigel Lappin
Matthew Pavlich
Shannon Hurn
Adam Goodes
Alex Rance
Luke Shuey

You can’t really include players like Cripps, Hawkins and Taylor Walker, who grew up hours from the nearest capital city.

Living away from major cities would prepare you from a young age to eventually move away from your families, I guess. But playing in the same state would definitely be more practical.

Harry Taylor, Corey Enright, Joel Corey, Andrew Mackie, Mitch Duncan,

It's be more interesting to see who knocked back big $$$ to move home, and instead stayed where they were.

Pavlich And Nick Holland were both approached by Adelaide clubs to move back to SA on big money (albeit Holland got a bigger pay day from the hawks to stay).

Dunstall knocked back a then league record amount of 200k per season for 6 seasons to stay at the hawks

A couple of points - in the EPL a lot of the time clubs pay for the families of young players to come and live with them wherever they are so it's hardly a like for like comparison.

In US sports, until quite recently players were drafted towards the end of college, rather than straight out of high school - there's a big difference in having lived away from home for 2-3 years already in a relaxed environment and then going into professional sports at 20-21 compared to going from gr 12 and moving interstate to live out of home for the first time AND being expected to be a professional sportsman at 18.

Except that the overall distance between these clubs and the players home town is much smaller
The obvious point to make here would be the kids they find in other countries and bring them over
The biggest difference though when comparing other sports to the AFL and players going "home" is simply the $$ on offer in all other sports
Thats why the AFL does not(nor should it ever) allow clubs to send players where the club and not players want

In our history I can only really think of two notable players that West Coast have lost due to the "go home factor", and that's Juddy and the G Train. It's late though I might have missed someone?
Shane Bond, Braydon Lyle, Brad Ebert, are also good former WCE Eagle players to returned to Port from the top of my head

Gaff probably knocked back more than them all put together!
