Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Just some interesting comparisons to be made.

Jolly also came off Melbourne's rookie list to play 46 games before being traded for pick 15 to the Swans when he was a similar age to Mumford now. Jolly was also not the number 1 ruckman at Melb at the time. Jolly only played 7 games in his final season at Melbourne, so wasn't starring.

Mumford is a late bloomer but still has played 18 games in this premiership season for a total of 21 games in two years which is comparable to Jolly's 46 games effort over 4 years at Melbourne.

Whatever currency you place on credibility but Sydney asked for a 2nd rounder for Hall a few days back. If they dont offer a 2nd rounder for a bloke fairly similar to how Jolly was 4-5 years back and who they are quite prepared to offer close to a cool mil for over 3 years, Sydney will have ZERO credibility in my book and be some of the best BS artists going around. Karma Swans.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Dawson Simpson is the biggest spud i have ever seen. If we are relying on him to cover in the ruck if Otto or Blake goes down, then we are screwed! He cant jump...He cant even take a chest mark...seriously, i saw him drop 2 uncontested chest marks in 1 quarter. If he plays 1 AFL game, then I will put myself up to be publicly drawn and quartered. D.Simpson=LOL.

PS: I love and rate Mummy, but you cant blame the bloke for taking the money in this case. All the best to the big boy...

And I'm sure Sandilands was a star at 20. We won't see Dawson until he is atleast 23 I reckon.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

I see the first bolded option as most likely, and the second bolded option as next most likely.

I think both would be fair-ish.

He has only played 18-20 games, so he will not command higher. Yet, he has shown ALOT in that time, and I am certain he will be a future top-tier mobile ruckmen at AFL level. In that sense he should not command less.

We got a packet chips and can of soda for Prismall, so hopefully we drive a harder bargain this time around. All things considered the bolded options are acceptable.

Look closely at the 2nd one you highlighted. We only move up 3 spots in the first round which I would think will not make a difference to who we actually choose. So basically you are trading Mumford for pick 46 which is a half eaten packet of chips and a can of sugar free soda.

Honestly the first time I looked at that deal I thought 'yeah ok' but when you really look at it, not very good

This.

Dawson Simpson will not play an AFL game till his been in the system for another year or two, all talls are project players, FFS Tom Hawkins was being written off this time last year..

The club will keep West around in case of injury and remember that Tom Hawkins can now have a run in the ruck as well.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

This board will go into meltdown next year if and when Blake puts in a shocker for us, and King and Mumford play well elsewhere.

Bookmark it - Blake putting in a shocker (or shockers) is bound to happen. Can't believe we would let a ruckman go who actually puts in at contests (Mummy) vs. one who spectates when he's not tapping (Blake). What are they thinking? King was a slightly different story as he doesn't have a lot of playing time left and is on the downward trend rather than upward which Mummy is.

It's not a matter of us "letting one go". Sydney didn't say we will take either. They said they will take Mumford and that was that. Geelong were hoping to keep both, they couldn't and now Mumford is gone.

I think its time a few people build a bridge and get over it. The club has got us two premierships, I trust their judgment.

Hmmm, i see what you mean.

Pick 28 is the best case scenario then.

Whatever the case the club is not going to refuse an offer and end up sending the guy through the PSD, denying him a big pay-day in the process.

Hopefully Sydney don't take advantage in the same way Essendon did last year....

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

A long time ago I was told that players nominate their own contract terms in the PSD and it is up to the club to accept & draft them. Been several occasions where the media has said a player can put a big enough price on their head so teams will pass on them to get to where they want to go.

Mumford will get his pay day be it Sydney, us or Melbourne (who according to the Addy have said they will take him straight up).

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

hopefully the cats start to take a stand and trade players for what they're worth. interesting to see port look like gettin pick 9 and a handy player for burgoyne, which is more than i thought he'd be worth. and it all probably stems back to letting nick stevens do untraded when collingwood wouldn't give them what they wanted.

when you look at what the cats have given away for below market rate in the last few years we're probably starting to look like easy targets. stand your ground and demand at least a second round pick for the players that you'd rather keep.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

We cite the case of Collingwood vs Cameron Wood 2008.

And additionally the fact that if Seaby is worth #22 (maybe he isn't but that's what you paid!) then Mumford's worth #14

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

I have a feeling you're right. We're not really in a position to bargain. If Mumford wants to go to Sydney, Geelong will most likely understand and try to accommodate him as much as possible. I doubt Geelong will delist him and leave Demons to pick him up in the PSD.

I doubt Swans will leave the Demons to get him in the PSD either, so I see a compromise on the cards, maybe #28.

In the event of Ottens or Blake being injured, West would play, or Hawkins would help in the ruck.

There will be no Simpson of the D variety (of the S variety is another matter though)

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Thank you Hinkley29 for your sage comments. Having said that it is a pity that we can't keep Mumford as Ottens possibly only has another year. What about our other talls in the VFL, anyone know anything about them.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

I expect the GFC is working hard to retain Mumford. With Ottens a possible retirement in two years there may be scope for a back ended contract.

The Cats now know market value (swans 900 with their extra salary cap - 800 for a standard club. We would have to offer about 750 over three years to have a chance to keep Mumford so i would suggest they are looking at 150 + 250 + 350 over three years. I think we have seen enough to be confident that without injury there is not much risk to this (probably a bargain).
Mumford will want to stay - loyalty does count for some players and especially for late picks /rookies who may feel that that rookie listing was their only chance in to the system.

The other option is for Sydney to trade to get a higher pick than 28. I reckon we need a late first round at worst if we can't keep him. Edit: Sydney now have pick 14!

As others have said the GFC know what they are doing. Fingers crossed.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

If Mumford wants to go, easy then, goodbye buddy. Like all the others like Chambers, Playfair, Prismall etc, once they're out the door-good riddance.
As far as Blake vs King has anyone thought that the Blake staying ahead of King decision was decided once and for all by Blake's better performance on GF day. King was deplorable, Blake was solid. In a close game it made a difference.

I like the sound of that a lot. I just hope that this is something that the club and Mumford are looking at. Would love to keep him. Whatever happens Blake needs to really put in a massive pre-season and show to the club that he has more to offer around the ground and with second efforts. If Mumford does go then Blake has to repay the faith shown in him.

Maybe I am being a bit harsh on Blake (he does an okay job without really being better than average imo) but I just can't help but think how good big Mumford will be in another couple of years.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Give it up people. Mumford is G.O.R.N. Its just a matter of the price we can get Sydney to pay.

Yeah, I'm not trying to stir shit but I don't think Roosy would have told the media that Mumford would be coming to Sydney unless both the Swans and Geelong had pretty much agreed to the move in principle.

I think 28 would be a fair deal for both parties but obviously hope we can get him for less.

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Geelong goes out on a limb to give this fat kid a break in the AFL, and he repays the favour by heading north for $$$, only to be second ruck.

I can understand Mumford's motivation - totally $$$ focused. Do we want someone like that at Catland? NO

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

There hasn't been many players over the last few years that have actually wanted to leave Geelong. (Other then Cam Thurley and we all know what happened there)
If Mummy wants to go, let him go. We cant afford to offer him anywhere near that kind of money. Even a back ended deal.
On the plus it looks like if Mummy goes then we keep Wojo who is a 2 time premiership player and may even sneak Marcus Drum and Jesse Smith. That would be a pretty good week for the GFC and have us strongly based for an assualt next year.:)

Re: Mumford wants to be a Swan

Wonder if the Swans would swap pick 14 for Mummy and our second rounder? (that would be mid 30's?)
That seems to be absolute best case scenario right now. We can apply to the pressure to the Swans because they aren't putting the Jolly deal through until we agree to deal Mumford.
