Some issues facing the GV that need addressing;
1. The future of Mansfield and Echuca as members of the GV
2. The reserves competition in its current format is not sustainable, numbers a major concern
3. The future of junior football in the region..u/16's need a better pathway.
If Mansfield and Echuca want out , can't see there is much the GV league can do without dis advantaging all other clubs .
Points 2 and 3 are happening in many leagues and are IMO a direct result of a reduction of player rentention post junior competitions .
Get rid of junior football leagues .

Where did they come from?
Mansfield were in the Waranga /North- East League which included Euroa and Seymour. Seymour joined the GV in 1976 and won the flag in its first year..not a bad effort. Euroa were also very powerful when they joined the GV. Other clubs in the old Waranga League were Yea, Alexandra, Avenel, Nagambie (I think) Broadford and Thornton. I think they then joined the Tungamah League. The Roar is back has a more info on his link.

Not getting into whether the league is being run to its potential or not, and the state of junior football in the region. The question is, would the GVFL be bending over backwards to keep these sides? Their departure would condense the league, lessen the travel for all other clubs and allow for an even 10 team competition where every side plays each other at Home and Away, perfect. Not saying they should just let them go without finding out what they may be able to do to keep them in the comp, but in reality would it be a bad thing for the competition if they weren't in the league?

P.S. From the two clubs point of view, I believe it would be a backward move for them to leave the GV.

Hard to see the justification for Mansfield to go to the OM. Their closest away game would be to Wang and Rovers, 5 trips to Wodonga/ Albury, long road trips, plus Myrtleford/Corowa/ Yarra. Would have thought that doubles with Benalla, Euroa and Seymour would be far more appealing to their supporters. Also given that they pull their recruits from Melb it would be more enticing to travel a couple of hours or less to play away games in most GV centres then to travel 3 and a half hours to get to Nth albury or Lavington. Doesn't make sense to me.
If they do go the club should keep quiet on the fact that for clubs visiting the Eagles nest their changerooms are the "black hole" that is the swimming pool dunnies. (still an embarrassment for a major league comp) Also creates a bye in the O&M draw. Would need to spend significantly more there to be competitive than in the GV.
The logic for Echuca is also hard to fathom. Whilst times are tough at present, they are a proud club and things will get better. Going to an inferior competition that involves greater travel overall, to my way of thinking isn't the solution.
I believe the league should work with both clubs to ensure they stay. Whilst some may disagree, the GV is a far better league with both Mansfield and Echuca playing in our comp.

The junior footy situation in regards to aligning with senior clubs being mentioned changes pathway in what regard? If your a serious talent as a junior you play in squads in under 14,15 and 16's before probably going on to play TAC Cup. You never really regain these kids again and if you have 4-5 in one year you lose long term senior players who may or may not be good enough to be drafted. These kids are what every club wants, talented locals. If they get drafted your club may never see them again. If they dont get drafted they may be disillusioned and not be committed or wonder whether they chase a dream through VFL if they can make a list. Either way you lose more local talent.
My simple thoughts in regards to juniors is to have development under 23 league in which all AFL clubs have a team and coach directing them what to do. Remove the TAC cup and leave the locals play locally until they can be drafted at 18. Cream always rises to the top but we will never see another Tim Watson playing at 15 in the VFL and most kids drafted are told the first 12 months everything they will do is development. It also helps academically as takes the training pressure and long distance travel away in their VCE year and from a purely selfish local footy viewpoint you may have a gun kid play 2 seasons of senior footy before they leave for their next step. The other positive is kids get a little longer to develop and can be mentally ready to face the challenges ahead. I think we are seeing too many injuries, road blocks and losing too much locally with our young talent not to look at long term options which may help grassroots footy.

Does anyone know what Mansfield's grievances are? As mentioned by others, whatever league they play in, they will always have to travel. Their oval is poor and their facilities are a bit embarrassing, which seems to have been accepted by the GV.

It couldn't be a money issue, as they'd need the same amount - if not more - to compete in the O&M.

They've had a good run in the GV with two flags and made the finals most years the past decade.

The only advantage for the league would be that each team could play each other twice. No doubt the GV admin would make it a 10-game schedule with 57,000 byes during the year though.

Aligning junior players with senior clubs shouldn't be about the talented players it's about getting enough 17-19 year olds continue to play beyond junior leagues to compensate for those giving the game away in the 20-37 age bracket .
16 years of age continues to be the highest age bracket playing the game , yet it tapers off majorly there after which is the major concern .
The opportunities are there for players of all age groups if the right people are involved and if a certain age bracket aren't being delivered the opportunity the league needs to invest more money into that area .
Nothing at all wrong with TAC , the problem is major league clubs like GVFL clubs, are no longer seeing surrounding distinct clubs as there major source of recruitment / development .

Fixture is out. Get it here.

* Round 1 is played over three days (Swans v Moor on April 5, Tatura v Ky on April 6 and the rest on April 12)
* Night matches at Euroa, Kyabram and Deakin.
* 4 Sunday games
* 2 split rounds and 2 interleague byes

Interesting comments from the Tatura coach stating that its becoming more difficult to recruit players. With the level of money in Melbourne ATM I can't see it getting any easier. Adding to the difficulty is the level of money in the smaller leagues as well. Imagine most coaches have been hitting the phones and roads trying to entice players which is the worst part of coaching. Seems as though most clubs are struggling to entice top liners

Welcome to the world of Country football clubs.Getting more difficult each year no matter what level league clubs are in mainly due to employment issues in country areas.

Hey fellow posters,
any news on where Jason Eagle is going to play?

I hope if you get hold of him Study1 he has his belt done up tightly as you've been on a mission to track him down. Why the highly significant interest?

Am hearing that Labrador's coach Steve Daniel is after GVFL players. Seddon has gone and also likely to be a number of other Ky players. A number of Benalla players have been approached including the coach.

There wont be any at Ky sad to see Seddon go, totally selfish and plays only for himself. Definately not what dirty is after. Would appreciate the details on the other Ky players "likely" to go.
Morgan has bought a house in Benalla and has a solid teaching position in the town. Won't be going anywhere. Which Benalla players have been approached? I haven't heard of one?

Article in the Ky paper says that Vick, Rhys Clarke and Jordan Williams all signed and Seddon the only loss..Ky seem to be ahead of where they were and have a number of top line juniors also ready to step up. Can't see Ky not playing off in 2014

Fair call Ringo, given that Luke Morris only played a handful of games and Beck and Clark will play all season coming back from Gold Ky will definately be stronger. Williams if he gets fitter will be good and the accounts from Newman's op appear positive. Ogden going in for a clean up on his knee but should be right to go for the start of the year. Throw in some very good kids coming on from their premiership team last year and it appears that things are falling into place nicely. Vick will be a great addition in round 8 and there is a whisper that he will be bringing a ruckman (196cm's) with him from WA which would give Reeves a real cut out. Given this hard to see any weaknesses in their line up.
Sheldon (Sam) is also set for a great year and is hard in training.
