They have lost about 4 players to Melb clubs eg young guys down at Uni. They have 10 of last years under 18 premiership side coming up. Most of them will get a go at senior level I would say.
Spot on. Echuca aren’t going anywhere for a long time.

Echuca have also established a club culture where players are preferring to play reserves there, than seniors elsewhere. Any wonder they’ve been dominant across all grades for so long.
Had a quick look on playHQ, Echuca had 6-7 guys play in the 2024 reserves flag and also the previous one in 2022. Pretty stock standard maybe even below what you work expect over a 3 year period.
You are correct though in saying the culture is strong at the moment with good systems in place to maximise the population advantages. Only took ash Byrne and Walker a short few years to establish and ensure it stays strong.

More the fact that a town of 20k+ only has 1 major league team. Seems logical. I think most posters on here would view your posts as strange 95% of the time.
Agree johnno#7: Ovens and Murray League with teams across the river would suggest an Echuca/Moama rivalry in the GVFL makes perfectly good sense.

Off the top of my head they have two on both sides of the river.

The town ( Echuca ) doesn’t have 1 major( premier ) league team , it has 2 and a population of just shy of 15k , whilst the combination of Echuca / Moama has 3 and over 22k , Moama having 7.5k.
The argument for the amount of teams and whether they are major ( premier ) or minor ( community) league team based upon population is a differing discussion to that of .

Yep the reason why Moama needs to be in the GVL.

Moama have been competiting against at least one across boarder rival , in the town of Echuca , for decades .

Has that been a big rivalry roar? South and east would have had the rivalry in the edfl, united have only been a club since 95 haven't they?
Like all rivalries the United /Moama rivalry has seemingly idiluted compared to what it once was , the cross border rivalry existed with both south and east in the Echuca district days .

What’s the stats on major league teams v population for shepp?
3 GV teams plus rumbalara and congupna in the Murray + shepp east in the kd

East, south , Mathoura
There are still ramifications being felt from the disbandment of two leagues in the GV area. The end of the Waranga North East and the Northern Echuca Leagues. Broadford have tried three different leagues and laughingly have been admitted to the Bendigo League for 2026. Yea went into recess as well. Closer to home, Cohuna are wanting out of the CMFL etc. I believe the introduction of Moama into the GV would be great, with a rivalry quickley established.

Leitchville Gumbower have also been in 3 leagues since then.

2025 marks 15 years since Moama won a senior football flag and was 4 years prior to Echuca United’s 2014 premiership . Moama have seemingly lost a lot of players out of their side from
Last year including league medalist and captain to Kyabram .
The majority of kids from Exhuca / Moama attend uni or trade school in Bendigo / Ballarat and in some cases Swanhill .
In recent years Moama have had quite a few Players from Kyabram which has seemingly come to an end . Likewise there has been significant transfer of players from Echuca to Moama which hasn’t been replicate to near the same extent .
It’’s appearing likely that Echuca United , who have been cellar dwellers recently , are every bit as competitive in the Murray League this year as Moama .
Yes the population within Echuca / Moana has grown and Echuca in recent years have been dominate. However the culture developed whilst ash Byrne at the helm and seemingly carried on shouldn’t be under estimated . He is a terrific leader and it’s inevitable that Echuca era of dominance will end . Much like Kybrams did.
Echuca / Moana is a holiday and retirement destination which significantly influences its population growth .
GVL will absolutely be doing everything to attract Moana as there is strength in numbers and they’ll be getting pushed to try to weaken the Murray and many will see it as a means of bringing down the giant .
But there are plenty of factors as well as recent history of clubs moving leagues to their detriment .
Let’s not also forget the last team to leave the GVL was the team closest to Echuca .
Big difference between tongala and Moama. How many years have Moama seniors missed finals? They've always been able to recruit players too

Demograophics are impacting leagues like never before. Smaller towns are dropping out of Major League Football and trying to find a niche in a weaker competition. The bigger towns appear to be getting stronger and have the junior numbers to continually spill over into senior ranks. The more affluent towns and suburbs appear to be getting stronger.

Their recruitment has traditionally been from GVL clubs where players are looking to reduce their commitment which will dry up if in the same comp .
Not exactly sure regarding finals, I’ll research
