High-flying Robbo to be a Swan in 2010
Like a confident poker player holding all the chips, Shepparton Swans coach Perry Meka continues to raise the stakes this off-season.
Former Melbourne star Russell Robertson confirmed months of speculation after signing with the Swans on Saturday.
Robertson was delisted by Melbourne at the end of this season after kicking 428 goals in 228 AFL games.
The popular 31-year-old joins long-time friend and Demons teammate Adem Yze at Princess Park after being overlooked for an AFL lifeline in the national, pre-season and rookie drafts.
``To his credit, he always said if he didn't get drafted he wants to play with Adem and me,'' Meka said.
``He kept to his word and that's the sort of character and bloke he is.
``There wouldn't be a club outside the AFL in the whole of Australia that didn't ring him, so it's a massive coup for our club.''
Robertson will juggle media commitments for Melbourne radio station Triple M with playing for the Swans.
``I said to him I'll be happy if you commit to half a season and he said `no way, if I play I'm going to play every game','' Meka said.
``He's doing special comments for Triple M and if we play on Saturday he'll do radio on Sunday (and vice versa).''
Robertson's other passion _ music _ was crucial in his deal with the Swans.
``He loves music and his band and he'll do a lot of corporate functions with my business (Global Group of Companies),'' Meka said.
``As an AFL footballer he came off the rookie list and really had to earn his stripes. Now he doesn't have to do that.
``It's all about trying to help his career outside football. With his band he'll help our company and help himself.''
Meka said Robertson and Yze's talent and experience would be invaluable to the Swans' youth.
``You can't just throw a whole team of juniors out there because they won't learn anything,'' Meka said.
``The thing about Adem and Robbo is they're good blokes. They're not idiots. They're not here to just chase money and go home.
``The experience they bring to our young kids and having them around the club after games is going to be massive.''
Robertson and Yze will co-ordinate training for the Swans' Melbourne-based group.
Meka said Robertson's signing was not based on money.
``There's no point bringing in 15 blokes from Melbourne on big amounts of money because in two years' time you have nothing again,'' Meka said.
``We want to put something in place to develop our younger guys into 200-game senior players for our club. That's over 10 years, not two years.
``We've picked quality over quantity to help with that.''
Large sums of money or not, it's clear the Swans are making a big play to dominate the poker table that is the Goulburn Valley Football League

Old Roota#6 was on the money there boys;)

The top 6 in 2010???

Mansfield
Mooroopna
Kyabram
Echuca
Rochester
Tat
Swans
United

Who misses out:confused:

Bit mischevious with the ladder Ringo. Pressure is well and truely on Echuca to finish top 2 with their recruits. If you work on the ladder as a pre season recruiting ladder it would go

Echuca
Mooroopna
Swans

and then a looooonnnnnnnggggg gap to the other teams.

With respect i wouldn't discount Seymour, even though they may be down on last season with liddell to the O&M
I'm with you ringo - it is very tough to figure out how 9 sides fit into 6. I's shaping as one of the most open and interesting footy season for years. What are the thoughts of others??

You can't discont the best three teams of last year; rochy ky and mansfield- they will still be strong.

Especially Mansfield as Ned will no doubt bring a few with him again

Echucas recruiting give the core players the opportunity to play deep into the finals series however their attitude, the core group of last year this seasons 10-30 best players, will determine how far they go.
Last year those same players didn't carry any expectation this year they will, wouldn't be surprised if it takes them another season ?

Gee I would'nt discount United's work-very impressive!

DISCARDED Melbourne forward Russell Robertson is to join former teammate Adem Yze's club, the Shepparton Swans.
The 31-year-old, who unsuccessfully nominated for last month's national AFL draft, revealed the move to the Goulburn Valley Football League club yesterday to his Twitter followers. ''Just signed with the Shepparton Swans for season 2010. Going to play with my mate Adem Yze. Oh my god, I'm going to just take hangs (sic) all year,'' Robertson said.
''And just quietly … and I may be wrong, but apparently a couple more of my ex-teammates (guns!) may join us for a few games! Shhh.'':eek:
Yze, 32, is returning to Shepparton after a season with Box Hill in the VFL.

He may also cop a few punches to the chin if he is going to be that cocky. Looking forward to see him play though, especially if he keeps up the lip.

as stated Ringo Echuca have potentially recruited there best 6-8 players from outside the club so last years best 6-8 become 14-16 picked and so on. Not too many clubs can do that in 1 year. Pressure well and truely on to be top 2 based on recruits.

Also heard Jason Cloke will nominate Echuca as his 2nd team when not playing with Bendigo Bombers so he will also be able to qualify for finals.

Echuca are not flying under the radar at present like say Mansfield are.

As stated huge pressure to finish top 2 based on recruits back into the club.

That I would doubt! All at the club realise where we are coming from and understand that we have heaps of work to do. Pressure is only a word and Jason Cloke will not be 'filling in' for Echuca. It is important for the club to have some good publicity as there was certainly none this time last year

OK. So no pressure or expectation at Echuca for the season 2010. So when after recruiting some 10 players to the club would the club expect to see some results? 2012? 2013?
Cloke will offer his services in late Jan to Echuca so you are saying he will be knocked back? Would be available for 4-6 games plus finals.
Your the Clubhouse leader in trying to hose down expectation for Echuca Ringo.

PS - words make up the english language. other words that are only words are failure and disappointment. But hey there only words.

Sam Dawes 99% back to united. Forys still a chance too which would have to make united a real contender
