The most likely scenario is that he was on the way out the door (with the intention to travel because he’s tired/ had enough) and this is our attempt to keep the door open for him.
Or he was about to go on leave while at the Hawks and we talked him into this role.

That’s a possibility.

I’m sure we didn’t promise him this year off though if that’s what happened.
Maybe it was; mate if we win a flag in the next couple of years you can have 6 months off

So you don't want Hine to do his own job? He is the current list manager.

He is the recruitment person.... he identifies talent. Strangely he is designated as "General Manager - List Management at Collingwood Football Club" on LinkedIn and strangely he has used that site to communicate with his network buddies......but he isnt the general manager of list management unless you are referring to the dream sequence that he experiences every night

Bizarre, because he was referred to as the List Manager all during the trade period :

Either way, I'm sure between him & Kelly they have it covered between March & September.

Doesn't Leppitsch hope to eventually transition to a type of role that Wright currently occupies?

I'm sure I've read that previously.

Who knows what the timing behind the scenes was but perhaps it was perfect timing and Wright gets his holiday while Leppitsch is persuaded to stay at Collingwood (ahead of taking up the Dogs offer) because he'll be taking on some different responsibilities this season with the absence of Wright and gets to expand his knowledge base.

Kelly, Browne & Wright have said they've been having these discussions for a while..and if that also included offering different roles, responsibilities & experience to people like Leppa, etc and keeping all our coaches, it's a win win as far as I'm concerned.

notice how he mixes up CJ and TJ.....I just hope he doesnt send a cheque to the hawks...

maybe i'm wrong and derek negotiated the deal with de goey's manager by himself....and picked the new kids in the draft. It makes you wonder why we're so bothered about wrighty.....derek's the man!!

It's hard to keep up with what dual roles Wright has had & retained tbh. He's pretty much done it all since arriving. His official title is Executive General Manager.

I was wrong, mate. Derek is the list manager and the gun. Even recruits for Chelsea and the 49ers!! And puts out fires too...

See? Nothing to worry about. 😉

could it be that derek is doing everything important and wrighty is feeling like he's got nothing much to do? Maybe this is just the first step in the derek takeover. Good call elliott... maybe Ned is just pruning off some of the waste soft cap money and allowing the real workers to take the glory...

It has the “if we are moving to Tasmania I’m getting six months in the European summer” vibe to me…

It's a very clear signal regarding GW's priorities for the 2024 AFL season. The duration of the break being the biggest hint.

He's held a tough job in a difficult caper for a long time.

Life > work. I'm his age, and relate to his desire to reclaim the part of his life which has been dominated by professional obligations. To give back to family etc.

In my eyes this is a mini-retirement. People don't take a leave of absence this long with total certainty about what life will look like at the other end of it.

He might return, might not.

I think you right about this as is Kirby probably 50 50 to carry on after his break but if we had pushed the issue he may well have pulled the pin and none of us want that.

I think Elliotts Magpies suggestion that Lepers decision to stay might have been influence by this is also correct and he is another bloke I would be loathed to lose.

I think we have leaders in place for us to cover GW while he is away and more importantly if he decides not to return, GW has made a great start and I would like it to continue but he has sown the seeds for success long term anyway.

Jathanus My post was addressed to you.
