Great Grand Finals?

Most of thet money for geelong came in before the finals and the bookies were already going to lose too much if geelong won so those odds didnt really match pre game expectations.

In any case pre game expectations dont influence who put in the better performance as the expectations can be built just as much on how good geelong was compared to how bad port was.

Can we put away the tape measures? It's ridiculous to state "my team was the greatest performance ever" be it 07 or 14.. so stupid.

No one was beating Geelong in 07 and no one was beating hawks in 14. That's really all that needs to be said.

Sydney were very slight favourites in my recollection

Slight favourites? give me strength man... all I heard about all week was how you were going to beat us by 50+ points.

Trust an MB thread about nostalgia and celebration to turn into a big ol' dick-measuring contest

Also trust it to be the Geelong/Hawthorn rivalry that nobody that isn't a fan of either club cares about anymore.

1997 is being replayed here in Adelaide tonight. Despite the result, it was a very entertaining match and perhaps underrated b/c the margin blew out a bit in the end.

Simplified game plans. Attacking at all costs. 100 tackles rather than 200. Far more enjoyable to watch than most football we see in the current era.

As a 'neutral' I enjoyed 2012 the most- momentum swings and a great final quarter.

really hope we get a classic tomorrow

I was just having my own footy marathon with the lad tonight. Not just Grand Finals, but we watched the last quarters of the following:

- Eagles vs Carlton round 11, 2006 (second week in a row the Eagles had a massive comeback to win, this time against the bottom placed Blues who were 44 points up in the third at Subi... was the first game I ever took my wife to and I was yelling at all the fuddy duddy oldies who were quiet all game to make some noise and lift the team. Needless to say, the last quarter was crazy loud)
- 2010 Grand Final draw - was actually just a scrappy, shitty contest with the highlights being Hayes' goal, Goddard's mark/goal, Maxwell's goal square save and also his half back mark over Gilbert, and I guess the frantic last minute or so but players were just way too tired to actually do anything special. Extra time in the game I just can't imagine. :p It's weird, I remember it being much more enthralling, but I guess when you know the result it takes away from it. I've seen it a few times and every time I keep wondering if I can mentally will the Saints to the win, lol.
- 2009 Eagles vs Hawthorn - Naitanui's second ever AFL game. Wanted to show the lad Nic's last quarter heroics.
- 2012 Grand Final - just an epic last quarter. I watched this with my cousin, a Hawks supporter, and was gutted for him (**** the campaigner, though, he's given me shit in 2005 and I held off in 2012, only to cop it anyway in 2015 from the w***er). But I do enjoy it because I never really got to enjoy the 2005 Swans drought breaker. :p Also, Sydney seem to be a better team as the underdog, they suck with Buddy now and being really, really good.
- 2011 Western Derby - the one where Ballantyne hit the post after the siren from the dodgiest of dodgy deliberate calls by the umpire. The umpiring in the last quarter of the game was terrible overall. Both sides r*ped several times when play should just have been let go. Really ruins the flow of the game, which was pretty shit with the Eagles being incredibly inaccurate and should have won by a heap, but let the Docks get a few late goals to almost pinch it.

And then he was asleep, so put him to bed. But yeah, long story short, 2012 was a cracker. Really the last one we've had for a while, hope tomorrow is just as good. One thing I noticed with the 2010 game was the crowd seemed really silent. Wondering if it was just Seven's audio work or my non-surround sound TV not giving me the full effect. 2012 was roaring, though.

Bash up Rob Harvey at every opportunity

1989 was the last great game of football ever played. It's been systemically manipulated ever since. The AFL changed it's name the following year and with it the game itself has under gone major cosmetic surgery. The last 5 years have been more than disappointing with the sanitation department turning the game into some sort of hybrid Gaelic football? The rules are now more laughable than ever, the Umpires have no chance to officiate it according to those rules and in doing so diluted the once great game of Australian Rules Football. Any similarity today's game has to 1989 is purely coincidental...
The only thing this years Grand Final has going for it is no matter what the outcome it will be better than 2005 and 2006, what i call the "Dark Ages of Aussie Rules."

1989
1984
1973
1970
2009
2011

I like those!
Dark Ages came back 2017 = Shocker!

2002: 9 point game
2004: Game on the line in the third, Power put the foot down.
2006: 1 point
2008: Hawthorn strangle the rampaging Cats. Underrated grand final in terms of quality. Lots of subplots and was still less than 3 goals during the last quarter.
2010: Draw
2012: Classic (heartbreaker), full of momentum swings.
2014: - Pure football, but the anomaly.
2016: Fairytale result but scores were level with 10 minutes left. Classic game.
2018: Most clutch goal in AFL history to take the lead with 2 minutes left. Classic.

2019: Is an odd numbered year. History suggests they aren't as good. Hopefully end up with Geelong or Richmond vs Brisbane to add extra mustard to the narrative with a massive underdog. Otherwise, Richmond vs West Coast as the 'winner take all' is probably the best outcome for neutral observers.

2005, 2009 and 2011 are all omitted from your list but are easily the equals or better than many that you’ve mentioned. I think a fair argument could be mounted for 2001 too.

Oh yeah I agree. I didn't omit them for any other reason than to just prove that the even year grand finals have more often ended up being better contests.

Fair enough, misunderstood the obvious intent of your post!

Sydney were favourites in 2014 what are you on about.

Hawks were $2.55 odds in that GF.
