Greater Western Sydney vs Sydney

The GWS list is choc a block full of talent. Considering the amount of guns not available and the uncontracted player selections still available to them at the end of the season, I think they have a better list then the Suns.

isnt this AFL comp supposed to be the highest tier competition of the sport in the entire world? more like a development nursery.

When you create a team from nothing do you expect them to be competitive? How else are they suppose to create expansion teams, pull ready made afl players out of their ass? The lions and port did just aswell as gold coast last year so this standard isn't something that you don't expect.

Opposition fans are kidding themselves if they think that's as good as the swans will get. I'm not saying top 4 or 8 is a lock, just saying that swans were pretty rusty themselves and cruising along all night.

Crowd was alright, felt like more than 39000

After barracking for the Suns in their inaugural season, watching their games, their style, and now barracking for the Giants in their inaugural season (what will i do next season with no inaugural team?), some quick brief impressions...

Giants are a more disciplined team, far better coached in all phases even this early on, probably even more than the Suns in their 2nd season. Giants have a better defensive structure, can tell we're gonna be more of a defensive team than an attacking team. I can definitely see Choco's style of play in the Giants, which should provide hours of aggravation. The Suns style, in contrast, is more of an attacking nature. As for the NRL converts....Folau is definitely AFL material, and far more advanced in his conversion than Hunt for the Suns.

On a better dryer field tho, the Swans would've won by 100

This is an accurate post, both teams would have scored more points had the game been played on a football field rather than the shit heap that game was played on.

From an entertainment perspective, the game itself wasn't pretty and didn't elevate at any point. But from a tactical perspective, the game was interesting to assess the Giants strengths-weaknesses, strategies, skills, etc. Will have to buy me a Giants jumper, much better than the abomination that is the Suns uniform. Noticed during the day too, tho not massive in number, the reach of Swans fans is quite extensive -- from the Illawarra to Greater Sydney to Newcastle. For 30 odd years been NSW's team. Will be interesting to observe over time how the Giants work into that, how wide their scope of fans becomes -- if it gets considered a specific 'westy' team for western sydney people, or whether people from all regions of NSW adopt it too, etc.

only saw the first half but observations are:

-gws MUCH better than suns
-the colours are a good combination in themselves but im not sure the jumper works as it is. on tv it just looks a bit...unfinished?
-Hunt is a more natural footballer than folau but i think he can still be a reasonable player. i think he may always be lost under the high ball but that pack chest mark he took was great and straight from rugby. will do that a lot i think.
-sheeds is a madman but can still coach. well. perhaps a few years out was all he needed to reassess the trends and shit of the game from an outside perspective.
-forwardline...??? need cloke badly. just trade scully for him, no really...

I think Folau should play as a ruckman until he's got the hang of it all. That tackle and follow up to help set up the goal was class.

The forward line lacks, but put Patton and Setanta in there and they can compete against a fair few teams. Fev still would've been handy though.

I dont think anyone really gives a shit as long as they are competitive - they surprised me and showed more than GC did in their first few games. It'll be interesting to see how they go against the top teams.

Not sure they did really. Sydney arent the team to thrash the pants off a side like carlton did to gold coast. People who thought theyd win by 100 were barking up the wrong tree

Exactly, Sydney have never been one to get a high score and instead establish a comfortable lead then lock the game down.

Plus the whole GWS playing 16 players in their defensive half does kind of dry up scoring.

Gold Coast scored more in their first game and had a lot more inside 50s than GWS managed last night (28 must be close to an all time low).

Massively impressed and after watching the Giants in a few NEAFL games last year i think they have got the basis of an outstanding team. Sheedy will drill them hard and combined with Williams they will insist on hard contested footy.

I think the have the capabilities of knocking off a few teams this year, if Brogan, Power, Setanta, Scully and Patton get on the park at the same time they will be very competitve.

Add Travis Cloke for 2013 and they have a lot of firepower!!!

one thing last night reconfirmed...ANZ Stadium still has to be the worst ground to play AFL on in Australia.

GWS was always going to get hammered so no surprises there. I thought they showed a bit every now and then but lacked the polish and class at this stage to build on nice defensive work they did.

It's difficult to compare GCS & GWS in first game efforts as both had different recruiting strategies so the game style differs with each team. I think the GCS has better mature age recruits than GWS so that would account for the better inside 50 count.

Curtly Hampton looks a natural at finding the ball, beautiful reader of the play.

But wow did he like trying to do the fancy or absurd with it. I don't think Old Kevin Sheedy would have liked that.

DOn't know about that, sheedy and choco do like thier aboriginal player and like them doing fancy things on the field, would have had a word with him but i dont think he would have told him never to do it again, but he does look like a exciting prospect

Anybody else hear Kenny Williams scream out "GET F***ED!!!!" just as he was firing up the Swans boys to sing the song after the game?

The players were throwing the Gatorades over him as well as young Cunningham prompting the outburst from the famous Swans stalwart.

It was piss funny.:thumbsu:

And for anyone who thinks the crowd was bad please look in the Syndey context. Its probably the biggest crowd for a football code in Sydney for 2012.

Biggest 2012 NRL Crowd in Sydney – 29,641 @ Stadium Australia on March 10
Biggest 2012 SuperRugby crowd – 32,071 @ Stadium Australia on February 25th
Biggest 2012 Aleague/Soccer Crowd – 18,180 @ Alianz stadium on March 10

The same weekend as the Giants debut, the Waratahs played in Sydney in front of 18,000 at Allianz,
13,788 watched Penrith dempish Paramatta at Parramatta,
21,702 turned up for the Bulldogs v Knights at ANZ Stadium
14,742 turned up for the soccer at Allianz.

Soo all things considered, we here in AFL Land are quite happy with 38,230 thanks. Really, if you are going to have a go at anything regarding the AFL, it shouldnt be crowds.
