'Weary' Dunlop would have to be amoung the votes.

Have to agree.
The obvious choice I would think.

Sports wise I'd choose John Landy in an individual sport and Bradman in a team sport, closely followed by Alan Border.

brilliant general in WW1, had 200,000 troops under his command, had a philosophy of keeping his men alive, first general in 400 years to be knighted on the battlefield, was the most brilliant military mind of the time.

The americans said they'd only release their troops to battle if they were under the command of monash!

Came back to Australia and was involved in many charitable organisations, he organised the SEC, set the foundations for the state and national electricity grids, helped set up Rotary in victoria and australia, helped set up ANZAC day, set the foundations for the shrine of rememberance.

Was probably the only general in ww1 that was loved by the troops and when he was buried, some 250,000 mourners filed through for his funeral.

My vote would be sir john Monash.
Interesting, worthy choice. Melbourne born of German/Polish ancestry, a man of varied (mainly military) accomplishments and definitely not your average Australian.

Would have to go with Ned Kelly for the anti-establishment working man.

Olivia Newton-John for the win.

- orator
- revolutionary
- outlaw

the sort of man could have been a great leader or statesman had he been born in more favorable circumstances

OK ...Richo, Bob and me - it must be right.

The guy helped invent penicillin for gods sake! The number of lives saved, the mind boggles, he's without doubt Australia's greatest Australian ever.

That said, if Hardwick manages to do the impossible, he may have competition.

Fred Hollows.

Gravy's right, Fred's a great guy but since he was a kiwi he's technically excluded from this debate.

It's always bloody disheartening when people start nominating politicians and army generals.

Agreed! Monash? Pfft. Florey was a man of creation, creating something which helped save many lives, people who engaged in destruction don't stand up IMO.

It's like someone saying WT Sherman is the best American ever over Edison.
