Autopsy Groundhog day averted! Swans defeat Cats by 30 infront of a packed SCG

Ha i must admit some of the HTB decisions were a bit

But was expecting it going into the game!

It wasn't even things we got pinged for, it was the lack of pinging the Cats for the same thing. In the first there were a number of occasions where Cats players just threw it away or got caught cold with the ball 'coming loose' where it was just waved play on.

The one on Florent I can totally accept being there, but only a minute or two before that up our end I think Chad (?) tackled a Cat for no reward.

there's a lot of debate these days about the tiers of ability/worth of players in teams ... the top players, the role players, the "bottom six",etc
our acknowledged best would be heeney, gulden, warner, grundy, blakey and rowbottom, but the depth of our next level of players must surely be unprecedented (there's definitely arguments to be made that some of them are among our most important, if not "best" talent-wise): mccartin, mcinerney, florent, hayward, papley, mclean, mcdonald, rampe ... and the way they're playing at the moment, how do you then rate jordon, lloyd, wicks, adams, cunningham, amartey, roberts?
jordon was enormous again today, amartey is getting noticeably stronger and better by the game, lloyd is playing about as well as he ever has, mccartin came back well, and melican, rampe and cunningham continue to do a great job individually and as parts of a terrific defensive unit
and mcinerney?! he was outstanding today (the little handball return to papley for the banana goal was sublime!) and isn't far behind rowbottom as the next player into our elite group ...
not everyone will be at their best every week but with our playing list, as long as most of them are near their best we're going to be hard to beat

it seems like we have 10 different scorers every week, and creative options all over the ground and a group of players with the skills to pull the trigger at any moment ... and we are constantly in attack mode!
late in the game today, we were holding on to a 13-point lead barely, five minutes left, and geelong coming at us in one last desperate surge ... and rather than try to just play safe, play for time, we attacked from a contest just on our defensive 50 that ends up in warner's goal to seal the win

at the moment we have the deepest "middle" group of players in the competition, which has to be a factor in what we're doing this season ... and why we're very much the premiership favourite
Terrific post and very true.
We have a group of players who are game changers/winners. The top tier above minus Rowbottom plus Amartey, McInerney and Papley. They have the ability to tear an opposition apart with the ball.
The next group are the contributors like Rowbottom, Adams, McCartin, Melican, Jordon, Wicks, Lloyd and Hayward who pretty consistently contribute to performance without necessarily setting the house on fire.
I would argue that at the moment the remainder of our best 25 or so belong to that group and that we have no "bottom 6" in performance terms. They may have the occasional down game but nothing disastrous.
IMO this is a big part of why we're going so well.

My, my... the 17 days (and one quarters  ) gap between games was well worth the wait.

It's getting to please pinch me levels that we are just this good and clearly a level up from most of the comp. We saw glimpses in the past couple of years that it could get to this eventually, but now it's almost 'normal' each game to get it done whatever the challenge. Knowing that they can turn it, come back & take hold like today (also as per recent v Blues game) is such good mental ammo to have come finals. The bloods mantra appears to be running stronger than ever throughout the club

As much as horse will mention the week to week thing, you can read into the players psych that they all have their eyes on that prize now. Our young crew have years to grab a cup or three, but I so hope we can actually get it done in 2024 - mainly for for Ramps, Harry & Lloyd in their twilight years.. 3 GFs and no medal must burn.

yes, i generally agree, except on rowbottom ... he might not have elite foot skills, but he is an elite player for sheer energy and work ... he makes tackling an attacking weapon, not just a defensive skill ... he and mcinerney are remarkably strong, relentless tacklers for their size
but rowbottom's work ethic and furious attack on the ball is a necessary part of what heeney, gulden and warner do when they get the ball ... i believe he is very much a part of our elite group
but that we can be having this debate is more importantly a good sign of what we're both talking about ... the spread and depth of talent in this swans team

The umpiring interpretation for holding the ball seemed like an over correction last week and this weekend has settled into not much difference other than them calling ball ups quicker to avoid the dumping of the player. Lizard was spun a few times and didn’t get pinged and similarly one of the Geelong players was the same (can’t recall who it was) but would have been a free last week.

However number 22 ump is a worry so you don’t know what call he’s going to make. The 50 against Hawkins was iffy but 22 owed us a few so you take it.

Florent still makes me very nervous with his decision making but he also keeps proving me to be too harsh in him throughout the match.

I declared to Dad I can’t watch this anymore into the second quarter when we kept kicking directly to Geelong and he responded yet I still am watching. So I called him a smart A and left the room for a minute and we kicked our first. My contribution right there.

i've seen plenty of really good swans teams, and often they'd be going well, get ahead of themselves, get arrogant ... and get beaten
this swans team seems to not only know how good they are but know they're good enough to beat anyone else, even when hit with pretty testing challenges ...
to give our bogey team another start, a 35-point start well into the second quarter, then basically have reeled them in about 10 minutes later, go into halftime all but level and with a head full of steam ... and dominate them after halftime ...
such a great win!
each win under these circumstances takes on different significance: today we really (should have!) finally smashed any lingering bad memories linked to our most painfully difficult rival of recent times

game-changer! you probably won't get a stat for it ... but we know!

and the timing ... when it was your turn to go ...

Ahh just copped a new sulk

We haven't beaten anyone good away yet , apparently lose down at Geelong if it was there.

So basically

  • home grounds
  • extra bye
  • academy picks
  • cola

anything else

McInerney and Amartey above Rowbottom? Gee whiz I love those guys but they're not at Rowbottom's level. At least not yet IMO.

He's absolutely elite. Clearly the best player in the comp at what he does. And what he does is probably the most important part of our game.

He was great again today and it barely registered because it's just become so expected of him. Just part of the furniture now.

He's 1 of 1 for mine.

Rowbottom is along with Chad on of our biggest points off difference and arguably more so.

We don't have another explosive type like Chad but other sides have versions.

Is there another Rowbottom in the league? he basically plays with Batman's utility belt on , runs around like sonic the hedgehog and tackles like a bear trying to murder you.

The only passenger in your side is Logan McDonald. He is not fulfilling his potential. Throw money at Warner and tie him up. If a WA side wants Logan, ask for a 1st rounder in return. Your team has no concerns kicking goals. Goal scoring mids and wingers are invaluable in any side.

That just isn't true
