I often wear a club jersey (as a Swan fan I feel it's my duty to say jersey, I also say things like "Get it right Ref") to games but have several rules I feel must be adhered to:
  1. The football jumper must never be worn on it's own. I'm proud to say the jersey has never touched the skin of my smooth, waxed Sydney chest. A jersey with nothing worn beneath? Chaos.
  2. Permissible to wear a jersey with a hooded sweat shirt as long as it's an afternoon game, you are under 10 years old and the sweat shirt does not have a zipper. A hooded sweatshirt being worn for a start later than 3pm would obviously be an inexcusable faux pas that would only be outdone by there being a zipper on the aforementioned hooded sweat shirt. The impropriety of this situation makes me gasp.
  3. After 3pm a button collared shirt in either chambray or white is allowable under the jersey but must be accompanied by a silk cravat in a colour that compliments the colours of the football jersey. A cravat with a pattern is an intolerable situation that to my mind should equate to the offender being escorted from the stadium. We are not barbarians.
  4. A night game is no place for a club jersey. Ever. Whilst we can unfortunately do little to stop the great unwashed from dragging Uncle Deano's playing jersey from the 70's over their lice ridden heads we can certainly "maintain the line" within the stadium and ensure that we and our families do not let the ball drop. My sons are absolutely forbidden to wear any team colours at night games. Jude Bolton once tried to give his game jersey to my son after a game. After I vented my strong disapproval to Bolton and told him to give his jersey to someone else my son was sobbing and inconsolable - an illustration of the effect of Bolton's callous, thoughtless act.
Please feel free if you would like me to clarify any other questions regarding proper attire for the attendance of football matches. Although as a Melbourne Demons supporter and MCC member I am sure you have been appraised of the correct way to go about it.

May I also take this time to congratulate you on raising such an important topic. It's because of centurions like yourself that the order of society is maintained. Huzzah to you good Sir!

and there you go... if you have to make a completely fatuous diatribe about outer or inner wear then you are truly a drop kick...;)
