I don't know about you but in the competitive market that is Western Sydney the Giants, who are about growing the game, should be by far the cheapest tickets in town.

$23 a game? Should be $10...or even free for the next couple of years.

You should never devalue a product to the point you are suggesting.

Conceptualised notions of 'supply and demand' obviously need to be taken into consideration, but if you give out tickets to everyone for free or at a significantly reduced rate, your brand will be looked at as being worth very little and it's a hard place to come back from once the public perception aligns with that idea.

I'd support $20 per match so it's a little more cost-effective, but at $10, you're starting to get into dangerous territory.

Not in Soccer/Rugby heartland and the generally lower socioeconomic target audience. Port Adelaide's cheapest Adult 11 gamer last year was $18 a game.

Maybe $18 tickets are why Port Adelaide doesn't make money from 50,000 people attending games

That's $3 more than a WAFL match

The Adelaide Bite were $5/game for most of the year

Haha Crows charged much more and still didn't make a profit this year. Look at the pages and pages discussing the SNAFL taking a huge slice of the pie. WCE's are the most expensive in the league. Anyway this isn't about profit but getting into the hearts and minds of the millions of people in Western Sydney. Bums on seats!

Adelaide Bite play a sport that nobody watches.

These are members. For every home game in Sydney.

Members are already dyed on supporters.

$23 per game for adult members is very cheap -$10 and you're probably losing money out of people attending

The AFL are losing about $20m a year with the Giants. 5,000 Membership sales are not going to help. The main point of the club is to grow the sport in NSW, not to make money at this stage.

5000 members at $10 per person isn't going to help at all.

If people only turn up because it's free why will they turn up when prices are normalised?

If you are willing to make a loss of $19m a year to grow the game I say to hell with it you might as well make a loss of $19.5...$19.75...hey $20m to get bums on seats and have the impact you set out to make.

At least if you go to a game and there is more than 6,000 people present an enjoyable atmosphere exists.

By mentioning the Bite, you're actually arguing against your own point. How many people go to their games? The $5 tickets certainly seem to be working!

People go with trends. What's cool, what's not. Is it worth my time, effort and money? Right now, the Giants aren't performing at a high level. More support will come when they start playing better. Psychology plays a major part in people making decisions, spending money, etc. Lowering the price substantially won't fix anything. Becoming the coolest thing in town and in turn, having a higher demand for your product, will.

5,000 a few times this year. Finals had about three games above 6,000 but were about $25 each.

8000 get it right.

Ticket comes with 2 free guest passes, making it effectively a 10-game ticket, and $18.50 per general admission. That's without the free train travel, NAB Cup and other add-ins.

Its amazing what wins do to a brand new club with no success

Don't disagree with that, but in lieu of that you have to work with what you have.

I just think the price is a bit exy for a market where you are trying to get people to experience afl, let alone commit to it via a membership

You don't become successful by devaluing the product. In any case, I doubt the price is turning anyone off. Not many people will pay (say) $150 for a membership but not $185. The gain in numbers would be marginal at best.

I may be reading it wrong, but Essendon appear to be offering an 10 game (no ANZAC DAY Included in price) gen admission ticket. I think most clubs bar the WA clubs have 11 game gen admin tickets in the $175 to $235 range.

Yep.

Also, it costs money to have members...be it the person on the phone, the computer system they're put into or the cards/scarves/stickers/whatever membership includes (I only really care about the card, but clearly market research shows someone wants the rest, or they wouldn't keep sending it).

The other issue is when you want to raise the prices....Going from $10 to $20 is a 100% increase, which would surely upset people. Going from $183 to $193 is only a little over 5%, so while 'a bit rough', most would cop it.

Actually, price rises could be an option...Set the price a little high, but with the hook of 'buy a membership now, and you get it for the same price for the next (5?10?) years'. Encourages people to join, and encourages them to stay.

Yeah, giving people a 'join up now and pay the same for the next few years' kind of deal could be an incentive for people to join, but it probably wouldn't be the catalyst for significant growth.

You have to look at how the Wanderers got to be so successful in a short amount of time. Sure, soccer is popular out there, but the club gave them an identity, a purpose, something to look forward to. It was and is looked at as 'cool'.

I think the Giants' problem is that they operate like a franchise, not a club. People don't identify with a franchise, not properly anyway. The Giants seem a touch amateurish with they way they put on games as well. Putting the rules on the scoreboard, catering too much to children, it all seems a bit too sterile for people to get really fanatical over. I know I seem like some anti-kid grinch scared of family life, but I do think in this age of political correctness, people and institutions can go over the top when it comes to creating a friendly, sterile environment.

I think Port Adelaide is onto something with its fan engagement. They cater for kids and families, but the match day experience is fantastic and filled with fanatical support. Don't get me wrong, the Giants seem to have good fan engagement, but they could take a page out of Port's book and get fans to identify and associate with the club on a deep level. It will take time, but if they change a few things around, make the Giants a 'sexier' product, something cool, with scope for supporters to really identify with the club, the expansion into Western Sydney could be a real winner.
