Here is a chart I made comparing last year's official AFL Rankings with this years final results.
Obviously rankings don't tell the whole story but I do believe it's valuable to compare with your players with their cohort.

Easy to see who improved and who stalled and who had a bad year through injury through the middle column arrows which relate to the name on the left. Big improvers/disappointments got a double arrows. I bolded top 100 players and also italicised and bolded big movers.

Some interesting observations. While we have improved overall and in terms of having 5 players in the top 100 from only 2, we have the same amount under 200 and actually have less total players (16 to 17) inside the top 300.
300 is important for me because it approximates to the total amount of starters for all 18 teams (324). So you could argue we have 16 starter level players.
Less if we lose Giles and Hunt. I underlined the so far expected losses.

While these rankings are great, I believe they work on a two year rolling total - and don't factor in any time off.

For a lot of our young kids, they've either got hurt or only played half of a season in their first year, so guys like Whitfield and WHE look like "subpar" players when we know they're out and out guns.

While it's definitely a good insight into how the boys are going, like any "ranking" system, it has its flaws. That being said, it's nice to see Cal so far up the list, and Dev Smith moving into the upper echelon of small forwards

Cal rated 22nd? Well where is the AA honour??
Dev beginning to prove he can match it in the mid field too.

Yeah they do but you can tell by the double arrows who really made strides. Three of those you mentioned (Whitfield, WHE, Devon Smith) and Patton so it does reflect what our eyes tell us.
Although it's also telling me while the cream is rising to the top, some players rise higher than others and some have stalled.
It shows which ones are keepers too. I wouldn't let Giles go for example without getting something. Hunt declined. Davis was injured. Greene was played out of position all year.

Also if they're third year players and haven't made the mythical 300 level, probably need to look at why.
