Assuming Madden got injured? His numbers didn’t move for a long time after a ripping start.

As expected boys got pumped. At least Gruz kicked 3, and Rowston, Fonti and Gothard posted good numbers. Derksen too but I’m guessing a lot of the kicks were from kick-ins.

Playing catch-up on the VFL:

The GIANTS have made five changes to their VFL side for Saturday’s curtain-raiser clash with the Cats in Geelong.

Forward Conor Stone headlines the inclusions, after making way from the AFL side this week. The AFL-listed GIANT is joined in the VFL side by Joel Rush, James Creighton, Tom McCaffrey and newcomer Kale Gabila, who will make his GIANTS’ VFL debut. The inclusions enter Saturday’s side in place of James Peatling, Ryan Angwin and Toby McMullin - who have each earned an AFL recall following strong VFL performances - as well as Josh Fahey (injured) and Nick Quigg (injured).

The GIANTS’ VFL side will consist of 9 AFL- listed players for the clash with Geelong.

A youthful GIANTS’ VFL side was unable to tame the red-hot Cats in Geelong on Saturday as the home side registered its sixth straight win with a 61-point victory at GMHBA Stadium.

Played as a curtain-raiser to the two clubs’ AFL clash, the Cats had a five-goal unanswered opening term and despite a valiant effort, the GIANTS were unable to handle the slick Cats at home as they ran out 16.14 (110) to 7.7 (49) winners.

It was a tough start to the day for the GIANTS who had their early 30-point deficit compounded through a game-ending ankle injury to dominant ruckman Nick Madden in the second term after a red-hot start to the clash. Hurting his ankle in a marking contest, the talented 20-year-old had already collected a then team-high 12 disposals and five clearances to go along with five tackles and nine hit-outs before injury ruled him out just 12 minutes into the second term.

Prior to the big man’s departure, the GIANTS were able to get going early in the second term as promising key forward Max Gruzewski helped turn the tide with back-to-back majors before Giorgio Varagiannis snapped a clever goal to make it three straight GIANTS goals and cut the lead to just 13 points. Geelong was able to quell the GIANTS’ momentum following Madden’s departure however as the Cats kicked the remaining two majors of the second term to hold a 25-point lead at the main break.

Despite the half-time deficit the GIANTS were extremely well served by emerging defender Wade Derksen who was a standout in the first half with a team-high 16 touches and six marks on the back of last week’s brilliant VFL performance in restricting Bulldog forward Rory Lobb to just one goal. Derksen continued his strong outing after the main break with a brilliant run-down tackle to save a goal in the opening moments of the third term.

But despite Derksen’s defensive brilliance, the Cats continued to prove too slick with two more majors to start the second half before a strong contest at half forward from Lachlan Keeffe resulted in an easy goal in the goal square to Gruzewski for his third. But once again the Cats responded with two of the final three majors of the quarter either side of a nice goal from GIANT Conor Stone to give themselves a seven-goal buffer entering the final term. The GIANTS continued to fight until the final siren and added two more majors through exciting draftee Phoenix Gothard and tough midfielder Marc Sheather but ultimately were outclassed on the day as the Cats registered their sixth win in a row.
  • Despite the loss, Derksen finished with 29 touches and 10 marks in a defiant display down back, while VFL skipper Ryan Hebron (27 touches, 11 marks) had his best game of the year.
  • Dashing defender Joe Fonti (24 touches, seven marks) also showed off his talent as the recent draftee put in his best VFL performance yet as he continues his development to press for an AFL debut.
  • Strong midfielder Harry Rowston (25 touches, seven clearances, nine tackles) also continued his consistent VFL form while former Swan Sheather (19 disposals, 11 tackles) was tough at the contest as always.
  • Keeffe (15 touches, 13 hit-outs, three tackles, three clearances) battled well all day after taking over ruck duties following Madden’s departure.
  • Gothard (17 touches, one goal) put in another lively performance which he capped off with his classy goal late in the game.
  • Meanwhile Gruzewski (three goals) once again led the way up forward as he continues to keep his name in contention for an AFL debut.

Fahey injured
Kardinia is is such a good stadium…ground is soft too I was told resulted in a bit of cramping across the field. Madden did an ankle early which didn’t help andCats transition was impressive. Some good patches but Cats w too much class. Cripps threw the magnets around final quarter and tried a few in different positions, Dirksen was really good, one error I can remember but he kept us in it for the first half. If backmen go down in the AFL I would expect him to go in.Probably the most improved from rnd 1 to now imo. Royston was good and I think Fonti did very well. Hamilton also had an improved showing from the previous couple

Fahey long term injury at wrong time, was injured right at the end of the Dogs game, just crap luck for him

The GIANTS’ VFL side will feature a host of fresh faces on Sunday after naming five debutants to take on the Hawks in Box Hill.

GIANTS Academy forward Riley Hamilton headlines the five inclusions set to make their GIANTS VFL debut.

Hamilton will be joined on debut by midfielders Lochlan Jenkins and Mackenzie Allen, ruckman Nathan Richards, and half-back Billy Galimberti.

Jenkins (Vermont), Allen (Old Scotch), and Galimberti (St Kevin’s Old Boys) all hail from Victoria, while Richards - who comes in to replace the injured Nick Madden and Braydon Preuss – comes from the Griffith Swans.

Injured duo Madden (ankle) and Cooper Hamilton (minor foot complaint) come out of the side this week, while Joel Rush, Daniel Gauci, and Kale Gabila have been omitted.

Coming off a bye last round, the GIANTS will look to return to the field with a win on Sunday as they take on the seventh-placed Hawks on their home deck.

The GIANTS will field their most inexperienced VFL side of the season on the weekend, with just seven AFL-listed GIANTS against Box Hill.

The two sides will clash on Sunday at 2:05 at Fenjiu Stadium in Box Hill.

All VFL matches will be live streamed free on AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App.

The Griffith Swans? That'll make Kickthething a bit happy!

We are infiltrating slowly. I am looking forward to getting out there Sunday…it’s a great ground to watch footy at. Yes, heading there instead of watching the swans v cats….We will be up against it, interested to see I’d Derksen can keep his vien of form going. I am starting to like him very much. Rowston as well has been very consistent and Connor Stone I hope goes well, he doesn’t drop his head when he gets send to the VFL hope he fires.

Will the new players be able to train with the team? I assume not, or at most one training session.

Reckon they have the captains run at least assuming they are in Sydney

The new players are playing VAFA in some cases. Presumably working and or at Uni in Melbourne.
Clearly we have run out of VFL players, also 3 academy players are playing for the Allies.
Presumably other academy players aren't developed enough to play VFL yet.

Turning his attention to this week’s clash, Cripps revealed that GIANTS Academy ruckman Logan Smith is in line to make his VFL debut against Port Melbourne in Blacktown on Sunday.
“He’s been going really well with the Allies and the Academy and we’ll get him in for his first VFL game this week which will be great to see,” Cripps said.
“He’s another young quality Academy ruck prospect. We’ve got a good history of that with Kieren Briggs and Nick Madden coming through and hopefully Logan is another one we can get some VFL games into and speed up his development.”

Cumming’s Return Headlines Seven VFL Changes

Isaac Cumming will return through the VFL as one of seven inclusions to take on Port Melbourne in Blacktown on Sunday.

The GIANTS will be bolstered by some key personnel for their VFL clash with Port Melbourne in Blacktown on Sunday, with Isaac Cumming headlining a host of inclusions.

Cumming returns after an injury-interrupted season to date, with the silky 25-year-old missing the opening rounds of the AFL season through a calf injury before returning for two VFL games until a hamstring injury forced him to miss the last six weeks.

Cumming is a welcome inclusion to Sunday’s team alongside AFL midfield duo James Peatling and Jacob Wehr who were the unlucky omissions for Josh Kelly and Jack Buckley in the senior line-up.

Meanwhile, Nathan Wardius, a former GIANTS Academy product picked up by the club as a Category B rookie in last year’s draft, will play his first game of the year after overcoming persistent shin splints which limited the crafty forward’s first AFL pre-season.

Birthday boy Will Shaw also comes into Sunday’s side, as well as GIANTS Academy young guns Josaia Delana and Logan Smith.

Both members of the Allies side featuring some of the best young talent in the country, Delana will play his third VFL game for the club on Sunday while Smith, a talented 204cm ruckman, will make his VFL debut.

Making way from last week’s team is Toby McMullin (AFL) and Josh Smith (injured) as well as Nathan Richards, Ethan Williams, Mackenzie Allen, Taine Moraschi and Lochlan Jenkins who have been omitted.

11 AFL-listed GIANTS will feature in Sunday’s VFL clash as the club looks to rebound from a tough loss to the Hawks in Box Hill last week.

The GIANTS and Port Melbourne will meet on Sunday in Blacktown at 11:05am.

I gauge our year on beating Coburg and Williamstown 🤣🤣
We don’t play Coburg, Bullants, Collingwood orvEssendon…we got a bit stiffed with the draw this season.
