Good win, although hearing all the cocky Hawthorn supporters penciling this in for a win, they only just won...

BTW, what was the crowd figure, it looked like a poor turnout on tv, the Essendon 'cheer squad' had hardly anyone in it, the Roos had more yesterday!

Was great to see young Dawson stand up. I thought he played very well under the pressure. Dixon tried hard most of the day with his 2nd efforts, I'm actually glad we have retained him.

Was great to see Crawf playing a great game as well.

What a game !!!!!!

Crowd was pretty good considering the weather. Bout 36-38 thousand?

We nearly through it away through some poor decisions in the back half. We looked like we were just expecting to fall in over the line, but Essendon played pretty well. Guys like Hird, and Lucas single handedly got them back in the game.

Good to be 4-1 and but geez it could have gone the other way. But we are normally on the wrong end of bad luck so I hope our run continues for a while yet.

Yeah, about that i think, the crowd looked more spare then the Melb v North match, lol, i would've thought 50k at least would've gone..
It would have got more if not for the weather (40,170)

Just got back, I would have said that there would have been a ratio of 2:1 Hawk fans...when that final siren went the place rocked :D

Or is that just me :D

I'm off to the hotel bar.

t'toes :D :D

What a mark and goal by Williams :thumbsu:
Sewell and co in those last 30 seconds

Very exciting last 10 minutes.

So should we start playing for priority picks? lol.

Suprised the superb diving lunge by Crawford didnt get a mention , saved the game with Jobe Watson about to take an open shot on goal in the last 20 seconds.

it was Lewis who tackled McViegh as he was about to kick the ball, that saved the game..Then it caused a ball up.

.
we only won 5 games last year remember.
Now we are 4 and 1

Dawson!

I thought he had a miserable day by all accounts! That wayward handball to Heffernan towards the end might just have lost us the game! :p

Definitely 40,000 there. I thought Tim Clarke played a great game. Runs hard and kicking definitely improved over the last 2 years

Was a bad mistake, but doesn't completely undo a lot of good things he did. Tooks some nice marks, attacked the footy, and made some good decisions. Is still very raw, but definately something to work with.

He'll have good and bad times, but he's been thrown into deep end, and there is no where to hide at full-back.

He'll be ok, and he's had a pretty good year if not for the Pies game.

There are two things I love in footy. Win the Hawks are winning and the Cats are losing... so right now I'm in heaven.
Despite some poor mistakes, I thought most of our team were nothing short of inspirational. Tim Clark was incredible. Guerra showed excellent form and will be someone for the young guys at the club to really look up to as a seasoned player.
Crawford was as masterful as ever. Williams did okay considering some of the angles he had to kick from, but definately not up to his usual standard... but how he held onto that ball for that last mark I will never understand.
To me, today highlighted that we will not lay down and give up, no matter how hard we have to work to stay competitive. Too many times last year Hawthorn gave up the chase, but that ethic appears to have changed and we have commited and passionate football players representing us.
Never dreamed this year would start out so great, and we have an excellent opportunity to go on with it over the next few weeks.
My faith is restored. Hawthorn, we love you!

Loved it, great win.

As for Dawson, I don't think he had a great game - at times his skills were similar to a post-AA John Hay! However, no doubt he is improving - what more can we ask for?

Well done hawks, great fight!

Agree that Crawf was brilliant today. That tackle on Watson was a game-saver.

Spida was also very good compared to how he's been playing.
Joel Smith was very assured, and Croad was solid on a tough day/tough match-up against Fletcher, who is still very very good.

Dawson has good hands and judgement. The turnover that cost a goal was ugly, but not as ugly as Monfries trying to banana it from 30 metres and missing everything in the dying minutes :D :thumbsu:

I was happy enough with Dawson's game aof m couple istakes one big one, but also did some very good things like the sheperd on Lucas and a few good marks. Consistancy will come for him soon enough.

Kangaroos, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney in the next 4 weeks, for the first time in a while i can honestly say i'm confident we can win each of those games but being a young side i don't think we will win them all bound to slip up atleast once.

He's been great Phil, what are you talking about. After 4 games done more than the $400K man at the Roos...

that crawford tackle won the game right there the essendon player had so much room he just dropped the ball and was about to kick it and out of no where crawf tackled him !!

Gosh, that’s a bit harsh, buddy23. I wouldn’t compare Dawson with Hay. In comparison to the elements of the game that Jonno has lost post AA, Dawson is fleet of foot runs like a footballer, has a great deal of spontaneity about his play, is younger and fitter, not sleepy and doesn’t make a fool of himself and will improve.

As for the handball to an opponent so close to the Bombers’ goal, Dawson, a student of the game, was pulled away from the ball and as a subsequence misdirected it. It looked bad due to the pressure he was under. The kid would have learned a lot from that incident. Next time in a likewise situation he will probably position his body to gain a better situation enabling the best direction and instinctively, from the lesson, get the ball away before the opponent is onto him. Improving players have good memories.
