Alice In Chains were my favourite band from thw Grunge era.

From Punk, I thought The Clash were a great band. Some New Wave bands like Joy Division were f.ucking brilliant.

A f**king awesome Melbourne band is Vanishing Point. If you haven't checked them out then get to it.

I bought their CD the night after I saw them at the Espy & it's everything that is good in progressive/power metal. They don't wank, they stick to melody.

Great to see a local Melbourne band that I truly believe will make it in the international market.

Cyclone were great on their debut CD, but I didn't buy the second one after I heard the change in style...didn't do much for me I'm afraid.

steve quit cyclone cos they wanted to get trendy and he didnt want to do the korn bandwagon thing

he is in 40 Alexander which is more rock..and a power prog styled band called KYMERA which features Gio who sings the duet on the Vanishing Point cd. They should be playing soon. Gio is a phenomenal singer!

FitzroyDio:

Was that the dude that got up on stage to sing the song Surreal at the Espy? or the guy that sang on the CD?

I had no idea who that was, but fuc* the guy could scream!

Metal - urrgh.

Bunch of long-haired fools poncing around in leather pants is the image that always conjures up.

Metal nowadays is packaged and sold like any other commodity, and is quite successful mainly due to the angst-ridden teens snapping up copies.

Listen to the Korn CD - bunch of cr@p about hiding in your room because everyone is bringing you down.

Korn is not metal.

Korn is rap with guitars.

True metal borrows a lot from classical and symphonic arrangements, hence the success of many combined performances between hard rock/heavy metal acts and orchestras.
To steal a quote from Joey De Maio of Manowar, "Richard Wagner is the true father of heavy metal music". Throw in Rossini and Paganini, and after a few listens, some similarities should become quite apparent to the listener, even if the listener doesn't know much about the structrue and composition of music.
Similarly, much of the single-note (as opposed to chord) composition of Mozart and Beethoven has been successfully and radically re-arranged by some great guitarists.

Now if you will excuse me, I wil get back to listening to Deep Purple's "Concerto For Group And Orchestra" (how's that for an eerie timing coincidence!!!!).

A very narrow minded statement there Bluey. That has disappointed me very much.

Unfortunately you don't know what metal IS.

Korn isn't metal, Korn is mainstream music.

Metal is not mainstream, in fact I'd be surprised if you knew a metal band at all, because it doesn't "Sell Out" to mainstream bullshit.

The only countries that understand true music are in most part the European countries.

They don't follow trends, and kiss arse. They just kick it.

Aah Johnny Cougar... "I Need A Lover" is a fantastic song. Gotta love a song with a two and a half minute riff-fest & solo at the start of the song!!!

Ever heard Emperor then????
The best band EVER for marrying classical with heavy.
For curious Napster people I suggest "Ensorcelled by Khaos"
Nuff said!!!!

PS. If you haven't heard them, do yourself a favour! - as Molly would say. LOL

ALl I've got is the debut (I think) effort with Emperor and Enslaved on the one CD (Emperor - Emperor, and Enslaved - Hordane's Land). How similar is this to the stuff you have mentioned?

Another band which has done the classical bit successfully is Rhapsody - very unique merging of heavy and classical on their three albums so far. If you had to compare them to anyone it would probably be Blind Guardian, but with segues into full-on classical orchestra pieces. Guitarist/driving force Luca Turilli also has a solo album in the same vein.

The first Emperor release (the split you mentioned) IS pretty primitive (but classic in its own way).

'Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk' (2nd album) is AWESOME. The point were they really joined classical & HEAVY stuff together.

If you've never heard anything like it, you'll probably find it a bit of a barrage/blur (it's VERY fast in places!), but once you understand the intricacies, it's AMAZING!!! Well worth the effort and work!

As I mentioned though, it's not for the faint-hearted!!!!

Not much of a fan of Rhapsody type stuff. I can appreciate the mucianship, but those type of vocals REALLY irritate me!
(Mind you, I like the singer from Dream Theater - go figure!)

Creep is the only good radiohead song. As for Metal, I find it rather bland. Everybody sounds the same, and nobody is doing anything new.

The Bands I like include Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Curve, Rollins Band, Radio Birdman and of course DEVO.

Creep is the only song they have done which could be described as commercial.

Is there anyone here that can get pleasure from music that doesn't rely on a commercial catch?

And just cause it ain't in the charts, don't mean its not commercial, it might just mean that it is too heavy or alternative or just shite! Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Solo, Chorus is still commercial. I got bored with this when I was 15!

I'm talking about bands like Radiohead and Pink Floyd who explore with sound textures and for the most part, completely ignore commercial hooks.

It seems to me we have a board consisting entirely of '80s pub rockers!

I agree Darky, Motorhead Rocks. They were the pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Thrash.

Which is exactly my point, I prefer to filter out the crap and commercial clones out there and seek out the pioneers of new sounds and styles. Those who defy what is normal and give it their own spin!

The M1 protesters today should be seeking out bands who are homogenising pioneering bands to make a buck (ie Matchbox 20 type tripple M bands)!
