Yep - good post. Hopefully he has people around him that can help him transition into to the next stage of his life. He obviously has some mental issues, I hope the club try and give him some guidance.Retired now. Time to leave him be. Wasn't cut out for it. It's not for everyone.
I'd be a little worried about what's to come for him now though.
Seriously he is an adult and should start acting like one. What are these mental issues?? Sounds to me like he just doesn’t care what he does or does not do that is a lifestyle choice not a mental illness.Yep - good post. I remember having a mate like ol' Harley back in the day. Would only need a drink or two and then every single decision he would make would be terrible. Every time. I tried to coach him a bit, thinking that moderation and better decision making when impaired could be learned. That you could go out with your mates and have a bit of fun without turning into a complete ******* with the police involved. But not this bloke. Nearly ruined his career and a few rotations through rehab. Only thing that saved him was being a pretty good operator when sober. And he didn't really drink that much. He just f’ed up whenever he did drink.
Only way this guy was able to sort his life out and become a normal functioning adult was to fully embrace the AA and the 12 steps, submit to a higher power stuff and go with total abstinence.
I suspect young Harley might need to go the same way.
I used to have a friend that was exactly the same, and I thought of him immediately when I read the news about Harley this morning. This guy could not have just one pint and parma at the pub. If he had one it had to be 15 and then find whatever else was going around. It always ended badly. I tried the same as you, to teach him that you didn't have to go 1000% all the time but it was like hitting your head against a wall. These types people need to decide that on their own and seek professional help. They just can't do moderation and have to be completely abstinent. Nothing else works. Unlike your mate, last I heard about my friend was he was stuck in South America, likely doing exactly what you imagine.I remember having a mate like ol' Harley back in the day. Demons dodged a bullet here

Clearly, this bloke needs help. I don't think we should kick him while he's down, he does need to be accountable for his actions but his life isn't a joke. I imagine what he's dealing with is pretty dark and difficult.
Since when has getting on the squirt regularly and not taking personal responsibility for your actions be deemed to be having mental health issues?I thought this initially with Harley but think otherwise now. Poor guy has some serious mental health issues and I really feel for him. Wish you well Harley, hope you are able to conquer your demons..

Is this the same Harley Bennell that was so concerned with the well being of others, including their mental health, that he decided to defend the animals who caved the skull of that young father in?I thought this initially with Harley but think otherwise now. Turn it up.As a supporter of West Coast in particular, I would have thought you would have some understanding that addiction is actually a serious, diagnosable medical condition.

Another snowflake.
and then, only speculatively; he turned to substances such as alcohol to help him deal with his problems which put him out of favor at Fremantle.
I take it you must be bored, never had someone go through my posts to argue with me on two totally unrelated mattersNo, it's not. The writing was on the wall for his career for about four years. If he didn't have an alternative plan for post-football that's down to his own laziness. He's also made a lot of money over the past 10 years. If he put it all up his nose that's his problem. Don't go crying to anyone now.
I think one-third of the country is getting Jobkeeper at the moment which along with the dole has been wound back. That's dark and difficult to deal with.
There are simply no jobs out there for a lot of people. That's dark and difficult to deal with.
A lot of people have only kept the roof over their head because of mortgage holidays and rent moratoriums. That's dark and difficult to deal with.
A lot of small businesses going belly up, people losing all their money, all their years of hard work for nothing. That's dark and difficult to deal with.
Harley is just soft.
Millions of Aussies out there on the edge and they're holding it together. Millions of Aussies much tougher than Harley.
You'd think Harley was the only person that lost their job over the past 6 months.
It's not like it happened to him because of misfortune but because he thinks rules and laws don't apply to him.
Turn it up.
Going by your example, anybody who stuffs up by drinking too much
or just by being a selfish dickhead has an out.
Another snowflake.

What a ripping bloke.
Reality is he doesn't give a sh*t about anyone else.
Well balanced thoughts on the issue ... no matter what i feel for him .I take it you must be bored, never had someone go through my posts to argue with me on two totally unrelated matters
You just cherry pick portions of my comments and use them to try and dampen my position.
My sentiment still stands, no need to kick a bloke who is going through a tough time. Just as I'm not going to kick someone who has lost their job in relation to COVID-19, or just as I'm not going to knock someone for their methods of dealing with trauma. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
If you'd like to discuss this matter further (or any others for that matter, clearly you've taken issue with me) you can DM me to discuss privately as not to flood this thread with fluff.
