Seems that halfway ibn Mick has done no better than Ratten with the club set to miss finals again. Will the Blues actually benefit from Mick or is it too late for him to make them contend and challenge for a flag?

Definitely not a failure. Was always going to take time for them to adapt to a new gameplan and despite the losses they're starting to play really good footy. Love that he's taken Gibbs out of the back pocket and put him in the centre. They'll be in the mix next year in my opinion

Why does it always seem to be about 'next year' for Carlton?

No failure.

Out club is largely run by what most people would term morons who thought we could challenge for a flag with our current list.

Truth is we can't yet, and maybe not able to with this group of players.

The gap between our best and worst has narrowed significantly from under Ratts. Basically when Juddy dropped from super human levels to a very good player last year, Ratts was done.

I am not sure how we should be doing any better than what we are, we have 3 AFL quality KPP players, a few a-grade midfielders backed up by rookies in Cachia and Curnow. Our defence is pretty good but due to the lack of a marking target who isn't Waite or a ruckmen masquerading as a forward we often have to disrupt it to chuck Hendo or Walker up there.

If we can recruit a decent KPP like Frawley, snag a Dale Thomas and get Menzel, Graham, Bootsma, McInnes and Bell best 22 worthy next year we may challenge for top 4.

Far too early to call.

Mick has said from the start he wants to see which players have the metal to stand up in pressure situations. After a couple tough games I'm sure he's closer to knowing which blokes are a part of the future plans and which ones he wants to move on.

Wow.. Every game except against stkilda we've controlled for a half or more and been in front for a good amount of time... We've played the most players on our list than any other (mick filtering and assessing), mick not playing players on reputation and solidifying the list to actually stop playing with flair and front-running and grow some balls. Most of this list has played under poor game plans or poor coaching throughout their Carlton careers and now mick is having to beat it out of them... Took Lyon 3/4 of a season to de-Fremantle Fremantle.... Micks efforts are now becoming apparent and sadly a little luck didn't come our way the last two for what should've been deserved wins.

too early to tell. he's working on culture as much as game plan. dropping yarran was a cultural decision. doing stuff like that sends a message to the team that ill-displine wont be tolerated even if it's detrimental to short term success.
First two replies hit the nail on the head. Thread basically over. It seems every Carlton loss spawns new "Malthouse is a failure?" threads.

I would relax those expectations. The problem with Carlton is they just don't have the cattle, but are always being talked up as a top four side.

There was another thread that had the exact numbers on this, and Carlton were at 35, sitting 6th in the comp, behind the likes of Collingwood for one.

But it's a convenient excuse, a little like the 'fact' you had the worst injury run in the history of the AFL when you imploded to miss the finals last year.

If nothing happens in the next two years I'd write them off for some time. They've got no solid youth. I'm worried about how they'll go once the likes of Judd, Betts, Carrazo, Simpson, Waite etc. all disappear. Who are their young guns? They've got Kruezer and Gibbs who are relatively young but in the next 3 or 4 years, their players in the age bracket of 21 - 26 are going to be very mediocre. Who will be their future captain? Mitch Robinson? Does anyone think their drafting of late has been very poor? If you're relying on guys like Josh Bootsma and Chris Yarran to take over the side once the likes of Chris Judd and Marc Murphy retire/drop off I think you're in some serious strife. Another issue is Carlton have always been 'thereabouts', not high up the ladder but not low. So their access to high draft picks has been limited.

As for Mick Malthouse and their current side, I'm sure a lot of Carlton supporters out there would've expected them to be higher than where they are now. Whether they're learning a new game plan or not, Mick wasn't brought in as a long term proposition. He was brought in for instant success (1 - 2 years) and I'd say with the talent he has under him, he has failed to some degree. Having said that, I have seen a lot of improvement in Carlton as a team as the year has progressed but the problem as I mentioned earlier, is that I can't see any young players coming through with extensive scope for improvement. So where will this improvement come from? For them to be a threat they need to do something because I don't think this current side is up to it. The solution in my opinion is they need to be overly active in trade week. Go after a Lance Franklin, a Dale Thomas or an Adam Cooney and land a big fish like Essendon have done with Brendon Goddard otherwise this whole Malthouse experiment will be a complete failure. It's not too late but the clock is ticking.

Not familiar with dymot's work?
No, I'm not.
He's past it and his team's not good enough. Seventh to twelfth was always going to happen.
How is he past it?

It's obvious that team isn't good enough for a serious flag tilt, we learned that last year. That's why we brought Mick in. To change the culture, and help build a premiership list. Remember?

Mick never said, this team will be getting close to a flag in 2013. He said they'd be raising the bar high, aiming at top four, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's what was expected.

Many on here seem to forget things very quickly.

Decent culture is as new to Carlton as Mick's game plan. I don't think they'll adjust to either.
If Mick could achieve a flag at the club where the ultimate failure is firmly engrained in that club's DNA, then changing Carlton and doing what's right should be a piece of piss.
