Has Malthouse Been A Failure?

Buckley on the other hand took over a premiership side that had just backed up Grand Finals.

He inherited Davis Brown Tarrant Johnson (ret) Wellingham Dawes (traded) N Brown Maccaffer Ball Krakouer Thomas Beams Keeffe Toovey Fasolo (all missed a year) Jolly Didak Maxwell (got old).

I'm struggling to name a player who has failed to kick on under Buckley given the above changes to the list since 2011.

Mick almost did as well as Brett Ratten!!

Huh? If best players were out injured, under Ratten we could not come within five goals and ultimately finished 10th.
Mick has a system no matter who comes in. Just doesn't have the cattle....we are depending on Casboult to do a Cloke for example. I feel for the bloke.

We had Judd, Carrazzo, McLean, Scotland out yesterday so Malthouse match day systematic process is clearly superior.

Ratten presided over the total demolition of Esssendon in the last elimination played - it was his finest achievement.

Sadly, a year later, the same list allowed themselves to be beaten by a Suns second team. Carlton supporters aren't interested in anything except smashing Collingwood and Essendon every year and getting to a position to win a flag. Ratten was clearly not going to get HIS list to a flag. Yearly losses against teams which are designed to play finals football like Hawthorn underlined the huge gap between a Norths style of ultimately flawed football and a grind game which brings finals success.

Ultimately Rattens game plan, list, player development and team culture was very flawed from a Carlton perspective based on results. His own list , his own game style delivered high highs and ridiculous lows, inconsistent unaccountable and ultimately second rate football.

Ratten has probably learned MORE about what it takes to build a successful list and team and playing style in one year at Hawthorn than all his previous years anywhere else. I am sure he will be a better coach as a consequence. He will always be respected and loved at Carlton. Maybe he will get a chance to coach again.

END of STORY as far as Ratten @ Carlton goes - simple as that.

Malthouse has been brought in to make Carlton a difficult team to beat and put together a list that is more consistent and able to match the grind football required to win finals. At the same time he is charged with improving drafting choices, player development and bringing the Club up to par as far as operations go. This overall management ability isn't to be found easily - the choices are relatively few and for Carlton Malthouse's experience represented a lower risk investment.

Simple as that.

IMO MM has under performed up until this point. I think we should have made the finals quite easily, even with the flaky list we have.

But, due to circumstance (onya Hirdy), he and the team have been given a second chance.

There are certain games where all things a new coach wants come together and maybe, just maybe, the second half of the Port game was that time.

It's a curious twist of fate that the team who's cheating derailed Rattens coaching career (IMO it all went to shit in round 4 2012 when a bunch of juiced up goons monstered us) are the same ones who have given Mick's a much needed lift.

Once again, Thanks Hirdy.

.........and good luck Mick, I think you may be onto something.
