If we're serious about playing Ollie Hollands as a defender this season that probably gives you some idea of how the list is looking lol

Spoiler: not great :grimacing:
What's the connection between Hollands being tried in a new position and how the list looks? They aren't playing O.Hollands there because we don't have anyone else to play HB - we are trialling specifically him because they believe he can add some rebound/drive to that line to aid with ball movement.

Thats what I'm saying - we don't have anyone else to play HB, which means the list isn't in great shape imo.

I get that they're looking for some drive and rebound, he's a great runner but I wouldn't say he's a great kick (functional but not his strength) and I can't see him being even a serviceable defender, built like a twig.

Could all turn out to be wrong of course, what do I know lol. Just not filled with confidence on it currently.

We have Saad, Boyd, Docherty, Cowan and even Williams who could all quite easily play at HB. And that's without taking into account Newman due to injury and Wilson (2023 draft). I agree it may not work out with O.Hollands at HB but we have options to pivot to imo if it doesn't imo

I don't hate the idea of him there, it's worth a try what's the issue with it?

We have Florent back there and we made top 4, and despite some of our fans not loving Florent hes been great for us back there. No reason Hollands can't be a similar type

Thats why I find it so strange he's being tried there (was apparently training as a HB even before Newman went down).

Seems like we're shuffling round pieces and just hoping to make them fit.

Yeh I get what you mean but I am happy for the coaching group to try things out - especially in the pre-season. If it doesn't work in the first part of the season coaches just need to be able to pivot.

Hope so, like I said I could have it completely wrong.

We'll find out I guess, see you back here in a few months ;)

It’s worth a try your two and I hate using the term okay but “quarterback” positions off the HB line are so critical they set up everything. He could work as one of them. It’s better than have Cerra fluffing kicks everywhere trying to play this role

Agree with the bolded, which makes it even more perplexing for mine - Ollie ain't a great kick.

Would much prefer Boyd, who is a better kick and can actually defend 1-on-1. Anyone know whats going on with him by the way? Didn't play Saturday in the practice match vs St Kilda but can't see him on the injury list, Elijah Hollands the same

By all reports he broke his nose. I agree he is an important part of that back 7.

Yep Boyd would make more sense I do understand what you guys are doing though

I can't see them getting better than they were in the second half of 2023. So yes.
The point made above about coaching and culture is apposite. If Voss gets the support (and Wright has delivered this before, twice) then its a good chance thus talented list might start performing better in crunch games.

If off field stays steady then yeah you'd say they are are tipping over to the downslope, but there's too much dynamite in the list to write it off.
