Yes. It was clear racism and people basically said at the time "well that is Eddie being Eddie" and when Lumumba stood up and said what Eddie did was wrong he was in fact the one criticised for it.

People joke but I think Lumumba was treated terribly by the AFL community.

Oh boy. Clarkson has been accused and deserves a right of reply. It doesn't downplay the allegations by not condemning him straight away. So many people are so eager to hate on the accused and it doesn't make someone a racist or a sympathiser if they want to wait for more information. The way you are thinking, quite frankly, is frightening. We must believe in the course of justice.

from being racist. There will always be some whether you like it or not and social media will polarise it. Rinse repeat.

People can not like you, but they can keep it to their ****ing selves.

Do you not see how that type of racism is even worse though?

No. I don't believe unthinkingly making a silly comment or assumption is worse than race-based intimidation, incitement to violence or exclusionism.

When used in satire the backlash is less, the perpetrator gets away with it, it's easier spread because people don't think it's a problem, even onto those who aren't inherently racists, it's harder to stop, it's harder for victims to speak up because they cop backlash for it for having a sook over a 'joke'.

It's certainly a struggle to get people to recognise the harm, but I don't necessarily agree it's worse. You're presupposing intent on the part of the perpetrator. What if they had little idea of what they were doing until it they reflected, realised and learned from it?

Atleast if it's blatant racism it's easily pointed out and you can defend yourself.

That depends on what the reaction of those around you is. What if people don't take your side even when it's blatant?

When it's a joke from someone who 'thinks' they're not racist you need to be careful with how you approach it because you'll be seen as an over reactor. Hence why people stay quiet for years.

As a non-white person myself, I just cut anyone out of my life who sees me as an overreactor or fails to call out racism against me. If my employer did the same, I'd immediately start looking for a new job. But perhaps I'm privileged enough to do so, where others are not, it's hard to say without knowing others' situations.

Then it snowballs throughout the community and you end up with an entire nation of people arguing that they're not racist.

Why do you think they do that? I don't think most of them are malicious, because they're often not consciously racist. Because of that, they don't want to be judged as being the same as a neo-Nazi, but if there are no degrees of racism, then aren't you saying they are equivalent? This is why I don't think "racist" is always the greatest thing to levy at well-meaning people, and instead prefer to use it to describe words, behaviour and thoughts. The word has acquired such potency that it encourages people to get defensive instead of reflecting.

All whilst the victims keep having to consistently cop 'low level' racism. It's a sadistic, cunning type of racism we have here.

Microaggressions are a thing and they build up, I agree.
