I don't think it's racist, or even necessarily xenophobic. It IS offensive, but so is plenty of what is yelled out at the footy. I wouldn't yell it out but I also wouldn't be jumping up and down over someone who did. I would be educating my children that it's not appropriate.

You can still be offensive and/or discriminatory without being racist or xenophobic.

And that's the nub of the matter. What's offensive is a bit like "how long's a piece of string". There are people who are quick to take offense at just about anything, just as there are people quick to go on the offense. And there are people who manage to interpret stuff as (or confuse the terms) offensive, derogatory, racist and xenophobic at every turn.

And then there are those with an agenda ...

I was at a Freo v Essendon game at Subi a couple of years ago, and had some Dons supporters a few rows back, very vocal and obviously pissed up young blokes.

We are in 107 and a few rows back from the boundary. So Pav is lining up for goal on the 50 mtr line right in front me. Bloke yells out" Pavlich you big nosed Yugo campaigner, you're ****ing useless" at the top of his voice.

He turns to his mates for some high 5's and back slapping and was greeted with WTF looks from his mates and most of the people in the block staring at him for being a fucwit.

That wasn't racist in my eyes, just a pissed up offensive thing to say especially as there were kids all around.

Whether somebody is offended by it or can shrug it off doesn't really matter. The negative connotations in "go back to (insert country)" are obvious.

I'm struggling to understand why you and others in this thread think that this is acceptable behaviour.
What are these negative connotations you speak of? I'd like to hear it

Is it racist to say the Indian cricket team is soft and will get flogged 4-0 this summer ?
Only if an Indian player racially abuses an Australian player then makes up a bullshit story to cover himself, then you call him a liar. Then you are racist.

Well it implies that he doesn't belong here, shouldn't be here, and should "go back to where he came from". It's quite obviously discriminatory.

The speaker may not have intended to make a racist comment, but if they were deriding Lumumba solely for his football ability or performance in the particular game, then there was no need to mention his race, nationality or background in the comment, because that has no bearing on what he does on the football field.

Any way you want to slice it, it's a stupid comment to make.

Brazilian is not a race. Not to mention there is a good spread of 'black' and 'white' Brazilians. Not all Brazilians are black you know that right?
I pointed out that Brazil is made up of several races. And yep there are several skin colors there.
The intent of the slur was pretty clear.
If you don't get that, you're not worth the trouble.

No it is not racist because your insult to them is about their cricket not their race.
Not really so hard to work that out is it?

Or maybe he was just saying go back to Brazil because I can't stand you being anywhere near me? You're just assuming that is what he was implying when really it could have been a range of things.

What was the intent? To say go to Brazil because I want you as far away from me as possible because you're an annoying human being? That's hardly anything to get your knickers in a knot over

Why not just say "Go away" or "piss off" then?

Pretty darn coincidental that the speaker just happened to choose Lumumba's place of birth for him to "go back" to...

I think they knew what they were doing.

So putting a destination to piss off back to is what people are being offended by? Geez that's making Australian's softer than they are...oh wait can I say Australian's? Or is that too xenophobic?

Brazil was the last country on earth outside of various arab muslim countries to abolish slavery in 1888 (when 15% to 20% of the population were slaves), the practice beginning in 1532 (the arab slave trade is the longest slave trade in the world, having lasted over 1000 years in comparison and some slavery in places like Mauritania continued well into the 20th century). In that time period, 4 million Africans were brought to Brazil and enslaved by the Portuguese colonists. The sugar industry and various gold and diamond mining enterprises were all built on the back of the slave trade in Brazil.

Not with the dogooding wowsers in this country who lable someone just because they dont agree with what they say. It would be such a boring place if we were all like these dogooders are telling us what we should be like.

And the relevance of any of this is...

This just came to mind, what If i tell Collin Sylvia to f*#k off back to Melbourne,or tell dale Thomas to piss off back to collingwood. What would that be classified as?

In regards to what the fan said to lumamba, everyone is going to have their own interpretation of what was said. We don't know the context it was said in, if it was actually racially/xenophobic motivated or just meaningless banter the guy spurted out
