Holding your membership to ransom

I'll be renewing my membership for the 32nd time IN PERSON this year! :D I'll be in Melbourne for Rounds 2 and 3. It's been three long years without seeing a match and I haven't been to the footy at the MCG since 2002. I did see the renovated MCG at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and can't wait to see us play there. Not that I'm counting the days but... only 3 months and 24 days until I arrive!

I can't believe how each year people want to cast dispersions on those who don't resign for whatever reason.

Sometimes people use 'excuses' to justify to themselves why they can't afford the high prices that accompany being a member these days.

Sometimes people just don't want to join up.

I just look forward to the yearly scare mongering by our President and CEO.

And to be totally fair, i am yet to buy a membership that hasn't been ****ed up in some way shape or form by the membership department.

If we get 32,000 consistantly we won't need to scare monger.

People seem foolish when you hear them threatening to throw their memberships away due to some relatively small mistake.

I suppose they are just wearing their heart on their sleeve and using the 'membership torn up' as evidence of how upset they are.

As a fellow member I hate hearing a bulldog person say something like that.

Not renewing your membership doesn't solve a thing. Write a letter to the club instead.

I have been a member for about 12/13 years with the exception of 1 year at the very bottom of the "Rhode barrell". At the time we had two children (2 months and 24 months)and going to the football was impossible for this reason, let alone enjoyable because of the pain of watching us get slaughtered.

The decision was initially made on our inability to get to games because of our children and was further strengthened by our on field performance.

Some people may call me a fair weather supporter and I accept your opinion, but disagree vigorously.

The following year we became family memebers and my children now proudly attending footy day at school wearing their bulldogs jumpers citing their favourite players like "mums favourite Brad Johnson" and "Aka" as he signed my sons jumper as Auskick.

As a result of my debatable support for the club, I have fostered two future members who will in turn foster their own.

The choice of whether they ultimately continue as members will up to the club, its players and management to delvier what they want out of an AFL Football Club.

To achieve unwavering support you first have to have connected with your supporters and that is hard to do when everything is not rosy.

For those supporters who are not renewing because of this or that, then I say let them go as they obviously do not have the passion for the club and may never.

However don't loose sight of the fair weather supporter who does eventually connect during the good times and as a consequence stays on during the bad!

If I didn't renew every time the Club

- Delisted a player I didn't want to go
- Kept a player I didn't like
- Choked in a final
- Lost an important game
- Traded a player I wanted to stay

I would never buy a membership.
