I'm sure there are plenty of unscrupulous people in the industry who put money and fame ahead of the wellbeing of the horses, but in my experience most of the people actually dealing with the animals are animal lovers. The animals are doing what they were born to do, are treated very well and usually go on to have a pretty happy life post-racing. I'd rather be a racehorse than a pet horse.
The industry dissociates itself from that side of it, which is understandable. It's not up to them to dictate what owners do with their animals, post-racing.
If cruelty is taking place at the abbatoirs then the responsible government department needs to step in.
Racing Australia does have some responsibility for these horses, they should be ensuring the people connected to the sport are of good character because if they can treat these horses like this in their retirement, then what else are they doing. Racing Australia should either take that responsibility seriously or the sport should be regulated to ensure that it is looking after its meal ticket.
Are you talking about cruelty at the abbatoir, or within the industry? The industry already applies a "fit and proper person" test when handing out licences.Undesirable people can be "warned off" and not permitted to enter a racetrack; even punters. It's a bit much to expect them to oversee businesses outside the industry with no connection to the racetrack.
If enough of a stink is kicked up that it begins to damage the business, they'll do something. Victoria's racing minister made a comment about "horse tracking" after the animals have finished racing. For now it's about making the right noises until it goes away.

As an aside another reason we should be grateful for the ABC. Does anyone believe this would come to light via commercial media who are in bed with the racing industry.
I don't particularly have a dog in this fight, and didnt see the ABC report, but wouldn't it be in the interests of someone who had horse sometimes worth many millions to avoid such maladies? Surely bleeding lungs is not very conducive to fast and efficient running in future events. If they are genetically fine-tuned for racing, why do over 50% of race horses suffer bleeding in the lungs, and 85% suffer gastrointestinal lesions?
Do you think the world would miss horse/dog racing?
The money from the industry would be put into other areas of society.
it's all about the money - that's all it's about - nothing else.
Nice melt. See you next year when the Spring Carnival is in full flight.Gotta love all the recent articles and interviews with 'horse racing identities' who are suddenly shocked and dismayed at the thousands of horses tortured and killed thanks to their love of the 'sport'.
Even Bruce McAvaney felt ashamed at it all - someone who's spent his life in the industry - confessing he didn't know what went on.
Sorry Bruce - you're full of shit. Or you're a dumb f***. Let's make a bet - 2-3 odds on, it's both.
Racing Australia’s chief executive Barry Dumb-F*** O'Farrell also said he’s 'appalled' but remained 'reasonably confident' in Racing Australia’s official data which shows just 34 horses annually end up at slaughterhouses. The ABC reported over 200 a week, Barry. What a prick.
The trainer of Winx gave an interview saying it was all wrong - 'we love our horses.' He didn't seem to give a shit about Bareul Jeong, brother of Winx, who wasn't as fast as his sister, so was shipped off to South Korea - where hundreds of other Aussie horses go - to be tortured and killed.
An industry full of scum and sanctimonious arse-wipes too ashamed to admit it's all about the money - that's all it's about - nothing else.
Those who go along for the fun, the fashions and 'colour' are just the usual numb-nuts too thick to see through the PR bullshit the industry has spent tens of millions of dollars on over the decades to keep the money rolling in.
The PR continued this year with Rachel Dumb-F*** Griffiths and her shit-stain of a movie 'Ride Like a Girl', partly financed and heavily promoted by Racing Victoria, released just in time for school-holidays and the Spring Carnival. A family feel-good film, unless ofcourse, your family has slow or old relatives being tortured and slaughtered.
Oh, don't forget, gamble responsibly.

Distateful really?Another way of looking at it is that without racing, punters would squander their money elsewhere, perhaps illegally, whereas the industry returns millions each year to the public purse through gambling taxes.
It is also a major employer and the third-biggest spectator sport in the country. That's a lot to dismiss with the stroke of a pen because someone found a certain undercover report to be distasteful.
Racing works.

Just as **** fighting was once a major sport in many western countries.
Punters would probably be better off if they had put all their money on Richmond for the 2019 flag and Dusty for the 2019 Norm Smith instead of trying to pick winners in some race held in a place they had never heard off.
Horse racing as a sport is one thing and how the horses are being managed is another.
Just replying to a suggestion that racing should be dispensed with because it's not necessary.
Weir and McLean have been sent up on cruelty charges. It's not like the industry turns a blind eye within its circle of influence.
I knew that but after Rance went down with his season ending injury, the odds on the Tigers winning the premiership would have blown out.
