Strategy How do we cover for Caddy?

In my mind, none of our backs deserve to be dropped but Astbury needs to return.
So push one of them up to the wing. Probably Baker, but maybe Short or Broad to the wing.
I don't like the suggestions of Balta on a wing - leave him to settle in the backline - should get a decent opponent this week to fast-track his education.

Otherwise I'd consider Naish or Turner or even Dow coming in - but hard to know their form with no seconds playing.

Castagna or Rioli could be an idea, but we are running out of replacements for them as small forwards.
Aarts is already in the team, and I always thought of him as a back-up.
Stack is out of form, Edwards is absent, and Bolton is showing he belongs in the midfield rather than forward.

A really good question that I don’t have the answer to. All I know if that Broad ain’t it in my opinion. He plays his current role well right now and I just want to leave him there. Perhaps Naish?
100% dont move broad.
If it aint broke done fix it, blokes playing great and moving him around could screw it all up.

Bring in a kid.

Astbury into the backline. Back seven including rotation:

Astbury Broad, Balta Grimes
Short Egg-Smith Baker

Move Vlastuin to a wing. He would be the most able to play the wing the way Richmond uses their wingers. Wing rotations George and Daniel when Kamdyn and Nick get tired of making Kelly and Whitfield look like total chumps.

We do have to solve the Toby issue though but Grimes or more likely Broad would be suitable for the eye scraper.

Leaves Astbury Grimes Balta to feast on the two Jeremies and Harry H.

As catwoman would say: “puuuuurrrrrrrfect.”

Plus you cannot keep that backline together, they are killing footy letting only 5 goals in over the last two matches. We only want to completely humiliate our opponents, not utterly obliterate them. 😁

Move Vlastuin from defence???? Are you crazy? He’s a key player down back for us, a superstar in the way he plays his role. Could not disagree more

Totally agree....Vlas is killing it with intercept marks and toughness in the backline...Vlas is a rock in defence!
Think MR has been drinking some of Mister Magic's Kool-aid juice! ;) :D

Astbury sounds ready, so he comes in. As others have said, all in the back half have been going very well, and should stay in. So who do you shift?

Grimes, Vlas - no chance. Too important back.

Balta? Would have loved to see him on the wing a month ago, but I've changed my mind. Leave him to settle where he is.

Limited sample size, but I reckon Broad on the wing was pretty awful in the pre-season.

Shorty, Bakes or Egg? Take your pick, but for mine, Egg.

Baker played wing in some early games. And very well. He has played as small fwd too. So he's most flexible. And Grimes can take small fwds.
Egg played well in his role, kicking quite a lot. I'd rather our backs feed him the ball and hit targets on the way out of the backline.
Baker is a feisty type, good overhead and won't get lost on the wing

I sincerely apologise for being strategic and creative, including but not limited to the application of lateral thinking to the thread question. 😉

So I suppose if you don’t like my suggestion, it falls for you to solve the question posed by this thread in a way that doesn’t leave the massive wing issues we had earlier in the season. We saw opposing wingers in rising 32yo wantaway football pensioner Isaac Smith, chronic alcoholic Steele Sidebottom, scared little weird guy Josh Daicos, taken pre-Bontempelli draft flop Jack Billings and 52 fantasy points over the two game since he played us f*ck up Bradley Hill tear us renewed versions of our exisitng rectal arrangements.....😳

Form hasn't been great last couple was ok miss the big body tho.Bring Stack in his role could be a idea or Stack to half back and move Short or Baker up the ground. Any one else from vfl worth a look.

Maybe just move Short up to the wing so that we can take advantage of his kicking a little more. Then if Astbury is coming in, it doesn’t affect the defensive rotations

with Astbury coming in you could move one of Short , Baker or Egg to a wing

or if there is a need to bring in a winger

Naish , Ross , Turner , Stack , Dow

the cupboard is hardly bare

Fair points indeed MR and elegantly presented. Even if Caddy was available for selection against GWS, we would still be exposed for speed on both flanks given GWS's capacity for rapid and precise ball movement down both wings. I don't have any compelling candidates for the role but am inclined to go with George who has played there in the past and performed fairly well. Possibly Rioli as well rotating with Castagna as a new source of chaos. It would be a big ask of, say Dow or RCD, but the match committee will know this stuff better than me. It's bizarre but Astbury's availability actually seems like a bit of a disruption given the way the newbies performed in the back line last week. So good to have choices though.

I get what you’re saying and appreciate your point of view. I just think there’s no way in this world Vlas can be taken away from his current role.
As to replacing Caddy, perhaps Baker although his lack of height may be a factor. Naish could be a good option as his kicking is elite from what I’ve seen of him.

I guess I was thinking of the backline structure as well given it appears likely Astbury returns this week and Crazyhorse Balta appears to have shoe-horned himself into our best defence. Vlastuin of course is killing it in defence and it is not a plan A thought to shift him out of there, but it does appear someone will need to be re-deployed from defence. It is clear that the brainstrust aren’t trying to create a new Robert Flower or Keith Greig on our wings when you look at who has been playing there recently, Caddy and MacIntosh. Hardwick says repeatedly we are system based, we have tried Ross, Pickett, Graham there so it is also clear from that they are looking for bigger stronger bodies rather than out and out speedsters. This is what led me to suggesting Vlastuin.

One thing, whoever gets picked there will have an element of risk about it, there is not an Egg-Smith replacing Houli or Balta replacing Astbury like for like just ready to step in and get it done.

Personally I would love to see S. Stack have a crack at it but he looked totally lost within our system in the earlier rounds. Or maybe you just say Fraser Turner you are a tall winger, you are ready to have a crack, this is the role, good luck. I sort of gather if the selectors were happy with Naish he’d have been tried long before now. I am wondering if he is one we will need to trade as he could possibly fit into other teams better than he does into ours. Intriguing question this thread poses, we are playing the team with probably the two highest rated wingers in the comp so it looks a crucial problem to solve.

Astbury coming back in will free up Balta a bit more. He had a big job to do last week (well not so big when you see how it went). Play him at CHB where he can roam a bit more and attack a bit more.

Not having Grigg and Brando on the wings playing that link up role has had an impact but it isn't unfixable. Need guys with a good tank (Macca has that but is still finding form - better on the weekend) and guys with footy smarts - reasonable diposal skills would be a plus. Stack is a guy who is too talented not to be able to make it work but probably doesn't deserve a spot at the moment. Pickett could definitely play there but you'd need a mid to come in to take his role (Ross or Cotchin if ready). As for guys in the team, Short, Baker, Egg Smith all look good in their current positions. We will need to start playing guys like Naish and RCD at some point to find out what they have. Will we do that against GWS - probably not.

Actually didn't mind George out there - he can find the ball, is strong overhead, can run all day, break lines, and is strong defensively.

Baker is a possibility but his size is a big worry when isolated on the wing in a marking contest.

I like Naish but I'm not sure he's a 'Dimma' kind of player so am not expecting him to come in.

I half agree maybe if Astbury comes back this week float George/Balta wing forward
