How have the Swans continually escaped critique and criticism for their lack of success in the VFL/AFL?

If only they had some Melbourne based fans. And hadn’t hawthorn ‘earned’ a home grand final 2012? Also had more mcg games than doggies in 2016

We know that the GF is played at the MCG. That’s the terms the clubs that play in the AFL know of. And there is work done to try to even out the inequity here. But that’s definitely another topic and one that is sure to trigger the non-vic supporters.

Do tend to agree with the sentiment of your post regarding success though.

Swans have been excellent since 2004. Very stable and consistent on the field. Contending consistently. That’s all you could ask for as a supporter.

A extremely well run organisation.

The Granny at the MCG - yep, unfair, but no point talking about that.. as is the game in Tassie due to COVID
The home finals that the Swans didn't play at the SCG, includes games played at the Olympic stadium. It would be the same argument that Geelong supporters would have. The Olympic stadium is a very different size and shape and also pretty hard for many Swans supporters to get to (Its in Western Sydney).

My point was that (and you agreed) the Swans have performed well in finals. And would (likely) have performed exceptionally well if all the 'earned' home finals were played at the SCG

ps... not I havnt mentioned the 2016 Granny which the AFL apologised for, for the poor umpiring

Do interstate clubs in general get more of a pass when they fail? I think they do

WC have been utter crap for a few years now. I don’t think they’ve copped a grilling like Bombers, Tigers and Carlton have by the media when we were bad.

Not being terrible for decades probably helps, would be my guess as to why. Just a thought

Some nutters think it's better to barely play finals and just capitalise for a brief period when you're good.

"Flag or finishing 18th, please" is their so called philosophy.

Sydney should've probably nabbed one more flag but they've had very high quality opponents most of their lives losing grand finals.

Conversely they’ve only won on the rare occasions the opponents aren’t high quality. Bradbury springs to mind

I still think West Coast 2005 and Hawthorn 2012 were decent opponents.

I'd say taking one of the West Coast and one of the Hawthorn grand finals was par.

Losing in '96 and '22 was fair enough.

'16 they should've won, even with the umpiring.

and yet the most obvious leg up, that the Grand Final is played at the MCG is probably more important than any "leg up" the Swans get.

Lol all in the one post you mention 4 multiple flag winning dynasty sides, three of which are talked about as being among the greatest teams of all time. Then you say that despite going up against that sort of opposition, the Swans should have “done better” than win two flags, have numerous grand final appearances, and make the finals nearly every year.

Better to make them and lose them than to not make them at all.

Split the games in 05 and 06 and had a great win in one of the great Grand Finals in 2012 against a side that then went on to 3-peat.

2014 - Shocking no argument there. Again the Hawks were a great side.

2016 The umpiring was atrocious. I was going for and wanted to the Bulldogs to win but the umpiring was nothing short of abysmal.

2022 they were just beaten by a better team on the day who had a great year and a magical day.

Honorable mentions in 2013 and 2015 and 2017

Not sure if they had players missing in 2013 come finals time but they were going fantastic until Port rolled them during the year.

2015 just lost to the Dockers missing about 5 or 6 players. Quality ones too.

2017 started was it 0-5 or 0-6? made the semis and Geelong got revenge on them from the year before.

Come to think of it 2018 wasn't a bad year also as was 2021 where they fell victims to the Giants for a 3rd time in finals history.


Swans along with Geelong have been consistent as ****. Throw in 96 as well a GF year and finals in
