Expansion How will Melbourne Storm survive?

I t hink half the side in sydney is nsw players, there isn't much but they're there. Adds credibility. And when Western Sydney come in, there are a couple of WestSydney players like paul bevan i believe, and kieren jack and if those two are added, then that also adds credibility, something the storm is lacking after 11 years. Sure the U20s have vics, but so do the altona roosters, lets see how many of them make it into the NRL.

I know the rookies are mainly from nsw, but not to many actually make the grade. Mind you it hasnt affected the swans, goodes, hall etc from sa/vic.

Surely News Ltd will end up dumping the Storm and writing them off? $6m loss last year was it?

With them now no longer a part of Townsville, Canberra etc you could suggest that they may be keen to off load their stakes in Brisbane and Melbourne.

I know the Broncos are worth a bit of cash and I'm sure that disspossing of a stake in them is something they are going to after selling the Cowboys.

What will News Ltd do with Melbourne Storm? Let them sink or continue to plow millions into a lost cause. A failure in Melbourne would be extremely embarrassing for the NRL. It would signal a big fat F for their non-traditional area expansion plans.

Even if it is a $6m loss, News Ltd takes $8 to 10m out of NRL profits, which it then uses to partially subsidise the Storm.

So the Storm will survive. If not owned by News Ltd, then owned or at least subsidised by the NRL itself.

If the NRL was clear of News Ltd, it could take the money it saves by not paying dividends to News and put that money into the Storm directly. And it would be at least $2m ahead of where it is now.

The Storm will substantially increase their revenues at their new stadium however.

Yes, because im sure all the other clubs would be happy for that to happen.

Increase costs too.

Of course, as long as NewsLimited is around the storm will always be cashed up, the new stadium was upgraded from 20K to 31K to 34K with standing room, much to the Storm CEO Brian Waldron's chagrin.

How will they survive?

1. Playing home games at a purpose-built football venue (something Victorians have never experienced in their life) that allows gate receipts income to increase

2. Free to air television on 9 in Melbourne

3. Good management

4. Good coaching staff and playing roster

5. NRL assistance at all levels

6. Winning football games and being competitive for the premiership

***
1 is on the way
2 is a work in progress
5 is happening, but could be improved
3 4 & 6 are happening

The Storm have come a long way in 10 years and have a great future ahead of them, but they are still a work in progress.

absolutly a work in progress, agree that the future looks bright.
I think FTA coverage of their games in melbourne will help, the only time you see them is at 1am competing with infomercials.

few years back they had every game on 9 live into melbourne, this was the teams worst performance in terms of results which resulted in poor crowd figures.

now they are successful on field, and with the new stadium coming in, what better way to expose the team!

and probably losing :D

What suprises me is that the Sydney NRL clubs dont complain about all the handouts and good players the Storm get which directly impacts their ability to win the comp themselves.

Its almost like the other NRL clubs are playing each other to see who will come 2nd.

Yeah what's with the Russell Crowe's etc. Couldn't they try to do an Eddie (i.e. president of a historically successful club constantly bitching about concessions given to non-heartland teams whilst ignoring the hypocrisy of a fixture in his teams favour).

If the NRL directly were providing the handouts, then they probably would. But it's the Storm's owners that are doing so. A bit like how a few Sydney NRL clubs get handouts from their associated pokie palace.

In RL, the Football club and the Leagues Club are separate entities and the Leagues Club generally provides the Football Club with an annual grant.... whereas, in AFL, isn't the Football Club and Social Club the same entity?

The Football club owns the Social club for the AFL clubs, The Football Club is the primary business.

Perhaps that is (partly) the reason why AFL clubs have bigger turnover than NRL clubs... ie, because the Social Club balance sheet is included. If Penrith Panthers for example included the Leagues Club balance sheet, bloody'ell... bigger than Collingwood!

Not really as most money for AFL clubs comes from the TV distributions, Sponsorships, memberships, merchandise and game attendance. The Social clubs generally don't contribute a lot of the turnover (except maybe in collingwoods case but then it's not really making them a lot of money).

NRL needs basically more money from the next TV rights, that will help expansion into perth and central coast, with further thoughts into another qld team, wellington and the smokey of png/darwin merge.

I must admit I've never ever seen an AFL Social Club, apart from the old dodgy old club the Bears/Lions use to run at the corner of the Gabba, but it was more shut than open for business. They dont seem to be as popular as Leagues Clubs, who are stand-alone clubs in their own right and not a second business for a football club.

Are AFL Social Clubs in Melbourne the restarant, bar and pokies palaces akin to Leagues Clubs as we know it in this part of the country?

Depends on the size of the social club. If the social club becomes bigger than the sporting club, then they're going to separate the 2 for tax purposes. If you only have a small social club, then there's no point doing so.

Carlton got themselves into some tax trouble a couple of years ago when their social club got too big, as the club as a whole was deemed not to have a main purpose of promoting a game or sport (and hence losing it's income tax exempt status). So they split the 2, and the football club remained income tax exempt.
