As has been mentioned in this thread it was a disaster for the game in nsw and qld.
Friday nights at midnight or not at all.
Sunday afternoon at 2am Monday or Tuesday morning or not at all.
Staggering incompetence, even by AFL standards.
The AFL didn't take into account that Nine televised the NRL game of the week live or on delay in NSW and Queensland and should've requested Nine give the AFL match priority over the NRL when the contract was signed in 2001 along with Ten and Foxtel.

Yesss the ball thud on ch9. Great attention to detail. I picked up on it randomly it might’ve even been in an EJ whiten game after they’d passed the rights on. Great feature
I forgot to mention, you could hear the players kick the ball and calling each other, which made it even more atmospheric.

Why didn't Nine and Ten take it in turn to televise the grand finals when they along with Foxtel decision to bid for the 2002-06 rights, instead having Nine only doing the home and away rounds, while Ten reaped the benefits by having the 2002-06 grand finals?

I don’t think it’s ever been properly explained, but in one of the books about Kerry Packer it says that he sat out the original negotiations due to ill health and picked up on 10 getting the grand final late in the piece and offered 10 a big cash amount and they said no. Under the deal each channel contributed an equal amount, with 9 getting 3 games a week for the 22 H&A rounds (including the match of the round on Friday nights) compared to 2 for 10 and in turn, 10 got all finals and the grand final.
