We've gone heavy on the midsized skillfull types. With Houli to come we'll have at least 3 small forwards and a couple of defenders added to the list. At least 3 with time in the middle too. With another ruckman added too. Pretty happy overall. Would have liked to see a tall young forward amongst the picks, but Miller will make up that depth for now. Think next year will be a tall draft for us

Where's the poll?

I rate it average but i also did rate last years average which i rate highly.

Dont know why we got Batchelor didnt think we needed anymore half back flankers.

One bad thing is carlton did extremely well.

I won't comment on players' ability as I have no idea, but I would have liked to see one KPP there.
We got 1 in Gourdis. ;):p:D

I rate Conca.

But I rate our draft selections scary!.. The recruiting department are either genuises or they are reading to much into things and not seeing the woods for the trees.

For example Conca, with his degrees should be high in a Pyshc test. Doesn't mean too much at that age but smarts helps.

At the end of the day, time will tell.

Based on previous years drafting, with respect, no-one gets a free ride in this area with me yet at RFC regarding scrutiny!!!

an odd draft to say the least. clearly an 'a' for effort, scouring far and wide, but i can't help feeling that we've skipped out on a few obvious 'best available' choices for the sake of novelty. judging from the highlights and live action i've seen of some of the kids taken this year most of the boys we've picked up are relatively vanilla, but then again noone really knows anything about them so it's hard to say.

initially very disappointed sheesh we over looked some very highly rated kids at each pick.
like magic says its scary. they are either geniuses or are being to clever by half and ignoring the obvious.
and as magic also says time will tell.

Given what I wanted from the draft heading in, I'm pretty pleased.

First off I wanted players that used the ball well, and judging by the comments FJ has made about each kid it would appear that they all are. Secondly, I wanted to see some size being added. All our first 4 picks are at least 185cm and by the start of the season should all be in the 80-90kg range. Hopefully this will help us be able to compete all over the ground.

As for the players themselves, having only watched highlights its hard to say just how good/bad they'll be. Given where we are at I'm prepared to give them a couple of years before I pass judgement on them.

im happy, i prefer players who can kick as opposed to athletes who could be anything.

i think either pick 47 or 51 could have been a kpp, but the club know what they are doing.

North get 10/10
Us around 5/10 - Won't know for 3 years.

When you think our draft could have been either of the 2 below:
#6 Heppell Lynch
#30 Mitchell Hallahan
#47 Gilbee Gilbee
#51 Ugle Ugle
#63 Cope/Giles Cope/Giles

As an avid watcher of draft age players I would rate our draft as good to very good.

I understand not going for Heppell, (supposedly suspect groin) but surprised we did not take Atley over Conca. However talking to my WA mates that watch Colts, they rate Conca very highly as he is a very good pick due to excellent disposal by foot, he will hurt teams.

Tom Derickx the ruckman, has a big wrap also as he has growen into his body now. Should get game time next year without a doubt. Bonus this late, pick 63. Again, good disposal.

Surprise we took Batchelor, although his foot skills are elite, like Conca, and he meets the requirements of DH; all players must be able to kick accurately. Personally, I would have taken Mitchell, big unit and KPP, something we require desperately.

McDonald and Helbig are definitely left field as I will freely admit they were not on my radar, but I do not get to anywhere near the games I would like to and Nason was off my radar last year and he has turned out to be an excellent draft pick-up. FJ and the team get to so many games around Australia, I doubt any player is not scouted by them.

Im happy with our picks!
Im pretty familiar with all except helbig but he looks ok!
FJ pulled a few from nowhere last year in Webbers and Naso and they can certainly play!

over all 5 out of 10 hope fj is not the new greg beck, cant understand why didnt go caddy or hep, conca f--- me lucky to go top 20 , batchelor will be the best out of the lot good skills but great hands 1 grab mark , happy with ruck at 63 wear they should be taken .

Pretty happy :thumbsu:

I'm going to view our overall acquisitions in light of who has left the club, to see if we have addressed issues:

Trade:

Grigg (Collins)pretty much a dead even trade in terms of position. We still shouldn't have had to give up anything for Grigg

Rookie Upgrades:

Gourdis (Polo) we were probably short a tall on the senior list going into 2010, which is why several talls were used off the rookie list. Gourdis deserves to get this spot after a great year at VFL level and some promising performances at AFL level.

Draft:

Conca (Tambling)sounds like a beauty - polished outside running mid to compliment our many inside midfielders.

Batchelor (McMahon) fits the blueprint to release Deledio if needed and put pressure on Connors - quality rebounding defender who can play lock down on a mid sized forward.

Helbig (Thomson) seems to be just a standard inside mid midfield depth, but has good skills which is promising.

MacDonald (Hislop) fills the role of Morton now that he is a midfielder. Morton fills the role of someone like Hislop. So in a way its like for like.

Tom Derickx (Simmonds)is a beast of a ruckman, but if he is half as athletic as people are saying than he is an upgrade on Gus!

PSD:

Houli (Cousins) mid for mid.

We have effectively only switched a forward for a midfielder by upgrading Gourdis and delisting Polo, as far as our senior list goes. I would argue that we could have done with another mid sized forward at the expense of a small midfielder/forward like nahas or white. 1 mid sized forward on an entire AFL list is simply not enough. Look at collingwood...didak, beams, sidebottom, thomas, maccaffer etc.

my mail was one of gaff, heppel or polec as first selection however just found out today it had always been conca and the others were just a smokescreen.

I don't know anything about any of them but apparently FJ and the recruiting team had conca rated as their no.1 in the entire draft and had him pencilled in months ago.

Looks pretty good on his highlights clip and we might have the makings of a super midfield. Only time will tell.
