Hawk supporters having a hard time digesting their humble pie.
Bringing up Bruns, Yeates, Guerra etc? FFS. It aint going to bring back the lost flag fellas.

Ummmm post 63 - first reference

Geelong good/hawks bad - yep we get it o_O

I feel sorry for the current president, whatever his name is.
Kennett did a lot of damage IMHO, keeping his name and his "achievements" front & centre at the minor expense of extinguishing any small chance the Hawks have ever had of going under the radar. Tirades that Clarkson is under pressure, this rule needs changing, game's for girls, Hawks get stiffed by the umpires, yada yada yada.

I'm with you on this. I would have preferred us to have let our football do the talking more than all the off field stuff. This is an area we need to improve on. It doesn't help that the media has such Buddy and Cyril love though. To some extent that is out of our control.

My point is that to try to retrofit the Bruns incident as the catalyst between the current war between Geelong and Hawthorn is misleading. The real bitterness originated in 2008 when you lost the grand final. I don't think any Hawthorn people disliked Geelong all through the 80's or 90's. In fact I had a great deal of admiration for you after the 1989 final (which I was at incidentally). A lot of us supported you during those years. The dislike of your club and supporters comes from the way you handled the 2008 grand final. It was petulance of the highest order. Yeah you lost a grand final you should have won. Just like we did last weekend. Get over it. If we're holding on to residual bitterness towards Sydney by the end of the month I would be embarrassed of myself. How you let that game evolve into the animosity that abounds today is sad.

again; I disagree, although it depends on what you mean by 'current war' - if you're talking about the general animosity between Geelong/Hawthorn supporters, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to go back that far.
if you disagree that's your business.
If you're talking about the Big Footy 'war' between Geelong/Hawthorn supporters, then perhaps you have a point, although as Clay Davis' uncovered, there were smartarse Hawthorn supporters downplaying our 2007 win prior to the '08 GF. I also recall Hawks supporters pointing out there should be an asterix next to our Premiership in '07 because we hadn't beaten Hawthorn in the h&a rounds. Believe it or not, I dont really care, but I'm not one to falsify stuff to suit my argument.

I don't really like the way you presume to speak for all Hawthorn supporters, or to assume you know how all Geelong supporters feel; sure, generalise, but that's exactly what it is.
Personally, I was upset by the '08 loss obviously, but I've never once used the 'Bradbury' tag, nor did I downplay Hawthorn's victory on the day - they beat us fair and square, whinging about it only leads to more humiliation imo.

Fortunately that loss was partially the catalyst for another two premierships for Geelong, so I have well and truly gotten over it, personally.

I was also at the 1989 GF, fwiw, bittersweet memories, certainly but a great day at the footy and I was happy to see Ablett snr kick 9 at the time.

Never going to actually achieve anything, just self-serving, grandiose, noise.
I know what people are thinking - gee that's unlike him, based on his political career...

Quoted for truth.

Kennett has done more than anyone to create this perception of Hawthorn, and their supporters. The media have created stories from his various public utterings, which reinforces the perception of arrogance and essentially creates a vicious cycle where the perception of hubris is reinforced.

Kennett's utterings about Geelong in 2008 remains one of the most stupid, inane and blatantly inaccurate things I have heard in football, and it's hard not to take pleasure in the Cats continuing to stick it to him (not necessarily Hawthorn as a whole, just him) ever since. His words about the hypothetical 2011 Grand Final between Geelong and Hawthorn showed that, even after seven straight defeats, the man had not learnt his lesson, though.

Newbold has his work cut out trying to rectify this, because unfortunately for Hawthorn the perceptions Kennett created have become ingrained in a lot of people.

The reality is that the current players and coaches at Hawthorn are probably no more or less arrogant than most other clubs. But when the media is constantly telling us how good they are, resentment builds.

In a BigFooty context, most Hawthorn supporters are probably no worse than any other supporter base. It's just that the Hawthorn trolls (no need to name who, it's abundantly clear which few I refer to) tend to be more visible and blatant in their overrrating of themselves and their trash talking of everyone else.

You got that right. Hawthorn was 0-5 against the two grand finalists last season. Nice work, Jeff.

It really was bizarre and so out of touch. It's completely hypothetical, but little had occured to suggest anything other than Hawthorn being a torn a new one had they played Geelong in the GF last year.

He simply came across as him being very arrogant, unrepentant and delusional. Cringeworthy stuff.

Instead we tore them a new one in the QF; as soon as Hawthorn fell behind in the 3rd they capitulated very meekly indeed.
Kennett is the King of Hubris.

It was the "Essendon should win a flag every 7 years" of the 2010s.

Reckon Clarko & Hodge et al just wanted to dig a hole, whenever they heard some of the stuff he said; they're the ones who deal with the pressure he created.

Fwiw, my dislike for Hawthorn has increased many times since I've joined BigFooty. It has sometimes overridden my dislike for Essendon and Collingwood.

It doesn't matter if it was.

I'm just giving examples of how sooky and ungracous the Geelong fans were after losing in 2008.

By the way, you better pray Ross Lyon can perform miracles and notch Freo's first premiership before GWS and Gold Coast get there. I reckon you'll probably settle for Bradbury flag.

I don't have to pray for anything.

It wasn't only Geelong fans who thought you skated across the line, your own captain said as much.
