Macaffer will have a great career after breaking into the side this year. Through the excellent thread started by TRS I see no mention of him. Just as a reminder, here's his profile from the home site (note the mention of him having played in the midfield):

2008 season
Played 16 games for the VFL side as a forward and won the Joseph Wren Trophy for best VFL player. Macaffer averaged 14 dispsoals, seven marks and two goals a game. He was elevated from the Rookie list for Sean Rusling injury and could see some senior action in 2009.

Career
Medium forward who developed well in 2007 playing for Collingwood's VFL affiliate Williamstown, after being drafted onto the rookie list at the end of 2006. Led the TAC Cup U18 competition goal kicking in 2006 as well as being named at full forward in the TAC Cup Team of the Year. Strong mark and impressive on the lead, but has also played midfield and half back during 2007 and looms as a versatile goal kicking option for the future. He was outstanding in the VFL side in 2008 winning the Joseph Wren Trophy for best VFL player.

Lenz, you should put your name up for Macaffer's "Buddy".
This is exactly the stuff which should be in the buddy threads.
Good writeup.

I hope your right and he did come on in leaps and bounds this year. Realistically its going to be a make or break year again for him. He has a lot of competition for the areas he can occupy.

With a young list and with a lot of them fairly evenly poised we need some of that group (McCaffer Wellingham McCarthy Dawes Reid Rusling Cook Stanley Toovey) to stand out and establish themselves as senior players and two or three to push on towards outright stars.

Development from this group more than any others will dictate if our potential and premiership is realised

exciting times at Collingwood with youngsters like this pushing for selection in 2009 season

he has a very strong looking physique(on physique alone looks to be a ready made extractor)anychance of throwing him into the midfield?? is he capable in terms of endurance and clearance ability??????.... either way we have a ready made replacement for medders when he eventually retires/flies back to perth..

He's a forward, high half forward at best not a mid.
Caff's a really strong , smart , efficient footballer. Great hands, smart body work , good kick , reasonably quick, he just does alot right. The only question is whether he has enough tricks for AFL footy.

He will be the next Buddy Franklin... im telling ya'll!! I posted this same thing up and told everyone to mark my words.... He will replace Anthony Rocca in the Collingwood side in 2010. He should play 5-8 games this year. Watch him

How can he be the Next Buddy when he is a Medium Forward and Under 190cm?

Mark this down.

Brent Macaffer in the senior side will be played at HBF.

Because we don't have enough tall half back flankers on the list...

In my opinion, he is nothing but a leading forward, and would need to displace one of whoever out of Medders, Rusling, Anthony, or Dawes are in the side. He was tried in the mdfield and backline at VFL level, but didn't do particular well at either role. If not for his sensational forwardline form last year, he wouldn't be on the list currently.

I like him too, but there is a lot of competition for a spot on the HF line.
That strong competition might keep him out.

But bugger me, we have some great depth now

So we play him so badly out ofposition he looks like the willi seconds player he was in his first year?

He only made progress this year when he got moved up forward away from the backline and midfield

imo maccaffer is should play like Ryan O'keefe in terms of positional play if i had to compare him to an accomplished afl player. Except that mccaffer is a much better kick at goal. i think in any other team he would be a handy acquisition but he will struggle to find a place in the collingwood team. this is not due to a lack of talent though.

in round 1 the only walk up starts in the foward line if fit should be rocca and cloke. dawes should only be played if one of rocca and cloke are not playing.

as for the 3rd tall rusling and anthony would be competing for that. i'd prefer rusling to get that position. he has already proven that despite his injuries he is able to kick his 3,4 or 5 goals a game that ARENT from purely opportunistic chances. the opportunistic chances are what the small fowards are expected to take, not someone who is supposed to be playing as a 3rd tall.

next year i think malthouse will intend to play medhurst further up the ground in an O'keefe type role but slightly closer to goal due to having the 3 talls fit. maccaffer should get the nod if medhurst is unfit or not playing. maccaffer has similar attributes plus is a better field kick which will be of great importance when played up the ground slightly.

the small foward position would be filled with the usual rotating player of didak, perhaps dick, thomas and davis (although i am hopeful davis and thomas will be used as midfielders as much as possible)

He will get a run this year, for sure. The issue seems to be fitting him in.
Rocca + Cloke + Anthony/Rusling is your 3 talls.
Medhurst is your medium.
Think you need at least one small player (such as Dick, Thomas, Davis or Didak) to round it out.

He's gunna be waiting til an injury to get a go, same with Dawesy and Rus I think.

I like MacAffer, and I hope he has a great year, but the reason he wasn't mentioned in the midfield thread is that he hasn't played midfield since 2006 at the latest. He's shown plenty as a medium forward though, and if he can get a gig in the forward 50 I think he'll make the most of it.

I hope Mick really mixes it up in the pre-season games to give players like McCaffer, Stanley, Dick and Cox a go and to plop players like Medders up in the midfield. Medders wants to play in the midfield and it would allow us to place McCaf up as a small forward.

It's great to stock up on young draftees, but there is a danger of superabundance and that we don't get to test out young players properly at AFL level - we might drop many before a proper go.

Here's a wee experimental team to try out the skills of the newies and experiment with new positions for older players, plus some experience:

FB: O'Brien, Prestigiamcomo, Goldsack
HB: Cox, Shaw, Anthony
C: Medhurst, Steele, Stanley
HF: Dick, Corrie, Cloke
FF: McCaffer, Dawes, Rusling
FOLL: Wood, Davis, Clarke

INT: Reid, Fraser, Swan, Blight

It's easy to be lukewarm about him.

Medhurst moving into a roving midfield role might be his best opportunity.

Everything Caff does is sweet. Good lead, good mark, good kick for goal. Lacks any x-factor and IMO midfield potential, but his one trick is a pretty good one.

As said though, if Meds is forward, then he has to knock out Rusling, Reid, Dawes and rovers / resting HFF's. That is hard to see. However, injuries happen and his "trick" is good.

It doesn't matter about flair when you are goals in the bank. That is where his chance lies; being a "no-brainer" 3-4 goal per game selection. The ball is in his court.

I ran into Brent when i was down Phillip Island way on Christmas Eve. He sounded pretty positive about getting a run this year, he said he's just got to make the most of any chance he gets at the NAB Cup and then keep his VFL form up.

Maybe with Medhurst being injured that could be his chance?

Theoretically he can release Medhurst to the midfield because that's who really has his postion at the moment.. the question for me is not if Mac can slot into the forwardline.. it's can Medhurst spend more time on the ball?

Plays a bit like Paul Chapman IMHO.
Hope he turns out to be a star like Chappy.

I think he has far more chance of making it than Cook/Stanley.
