Iconic movies - school me!

There is a total lack of Aussie and foreign films here. Here are are a few recommendations.

Strictly Ballroom
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Muriels Wedding
The Dish
The Castle.
Walkabout
and the greatest of them all, Carlton supporters would absolutely love it, The Club (its on Prime)

Foreign Films
In Bruges
Amelie
Run Lola Run
The Commitments
I've seen Strictly, Priscilla, Muriel and the Castle. I shall check out The Club for sure!

I've also seen In Bruges but not the others.

Thank you :)

Rewatched The Fugitive tonight because of this thread. Still stands up. Tommy Lee Jones won an Oscar so got a sequel. Also had a young Julianne Moore which I'd forgotten about and an even younger Jane Lynch I never even noticed.
It's a 10/10 film. So good.

Lynch is a year older than moore so technically it should be a young lynch and an even younger moore.

Yes im that guy who feels the need to correct factually incorrect but irrelevant statements.

Primal Fear is pretty iconic for its ending and for Ed Norton smashing it out of the park in his first role.
Exactly, unknown new actor planting his flag. The film's fairly standard until near the end he lets slip the facade and you see the truth. Great work there.

I mean, the movie has been out for 28 years and no one said they were about to watch it for the first time :tearsofjoy:
Was partly thinking the same, spoiler alerts on movies more than a quarter of a century old seems wild, however the thread is specifically for recommending movies to someone who may not have seen them.

I watched Seven. Why are all of these iconic movies so INTENSE help
Made back in the day when it was ok to scare people, or make people feel uncomfortable and with no pre warnings etc. good times.
Such a good movie.

I think movie makers can still do all that? There's still plenty of intense thrillers and other scaries that come out.
No, wOkE hAs rUinEd eVerYthIng.

Filmmakers are definitely still doing interesting things but classic movies come with an extra layer of nostalgia attached, depending on when and where you were in your life when you watched them, hence people saying 'they don't make movies like they used to'.

That's an odd thing to say.

I'm of the same opinion as what you're alluding to. I still watch modern movies but I don't feel they're as memorable as the greats.

There are some exception. The new Top Gun > the original Top Gun.

As a general rule though, I firmly believe movies these days aren't as memorable.

I guess there's a difference between iconic and personally memorable. There's been many movies I've seen in recent years that I would consider to be personally memorable.

There are definitely some great modern movies but I do think there’s a Disneyfication under way, where a lot of edge on mainstream films have been focus grouped away and made corporate friendly (different to things being made “woke”, to the extent that means anything anymore I think any normal person should celebrate that films can now be told by and from the perspective of a more diverse range of characters).

That said, to the question of “why are all these movies so intense?” I think a lot of them are movies people posted that they loved as teenage boys, when you would see things like this and it would be like “wow that’s so subversive”. A film like Beau travail wouldn’t have appealed to me as a 15 year old in the way that Se7en did, but if I had to pick one now, it’s not really a contest (though I still do like Se7en).

Mmm, maybe? I suppose it's mostly men making recommendations to me and stereotypically speaking they're probably more inclined to choose action or thrillers than women are? That's a huge assumption by me though.
