My pick for 'iconic' horror would be Rosemary's Baby.

Was the horror movie of the 1960s and is widely considered to be one the best ever.

To your point about psychological horror MrsEddieBetts , it is the perfect example of that IMO. Scary and stressful without a single piece of gore.

Iconic horror movies:

Rosemary's Baby
The Shining
Psycho
Scream
The Thing
Modern classic: Hereditary
Thank you! My project has lost some momentum of late but I'm hoping to get back into it this weekend.

I've seen Rosemary's Baby after reading the book and I thoroughly enjoyed it in both formats.

I don't think I'm brave enough for Hereditary but I'd give the others a go.

Yeah nice! I'll have to give the book a go.

Psycho and The Shining are definitely iconic, both have tonnes of pop culture relevance and have been endlessly referenced etc.

Neither are super violent although I will say I find The Shining quite creepy. Psycho is just a joyous Hitchcock classic.

As an old softy.. I have a few Iconics.

I didn't see Thelma and Louise in here, so definitely if you haven't seen it.

If you liked The Breakfast Club era of movies, Sixteen Candles, St Elmos Fire (my fave), Pretty in Pink. I'm a sucker for all these 80's/90s ones

Cruel Intentions is almost a must re-watch.

Prepare your throwing tomatoes - I watched Shawshank last night and just didn’t love it.
I’m the same with Gladiator.

Watched it when it came out.
Watched it again a few months ago.

I just didn’t get the hype.

I’ve never really been the biggest fan of Crowe so perhaps that has something to do with it.

I could honestly go on and on with movies that I personally enjoy and think are iconic in my opinion, and totally understand if others disagree, but here’s a small list that I’d lob into that “iconic” bracket.

The Goonies
Back to the Future
Die Hard
Raging Bull
The Shining
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
Beverly Hills Cop
Stand By Me
The Neverending Story
Terminator 1 & 2
Predator
Batman (1989)
Total Recall
Coming to America
Ghostbusters
Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory
The Godfather Trilogy
Alien
Apocalypse Now
Jaws
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Deliverance
Rambo: First Blood
Rocky 1-4

You can make a case for some the sequels also, and there are just so many more depending upon what kind of movie you enjoy watching.

I haven’t seen Gladiator yet - it’s on the list. Sometimes I feel like if I’d watched the movie when everyone else did I’d get the hype more.

But you saw it when it came out so maybe it’s just not your bag.
