I have a sneaking suspicion, that when we get to about round 18 and the AFL decide to release the round 23 fixture, that they may decide to schedule a couple of games during the bye round (so effectively it won't be a bye round anymore) for the teams that are not in finals contention.

Thus, what we may end up having is 7 games on the first weekend, and the two games on the "bye" weekend might by Essendon vs Carlton on Friday night and St.Kilda vs Brisbane at Etihad.

That's my prediction. I actually don't think it will end up being a bye round. I think the AFL will change their mind.
Carlton and Melboune can play on the Friday. They won't have to worry about finals

What about Australian State League Championship.

Just not a sponsored name competition. If it was to be sponsored attach it like the AFL do e.g. Toyota Australian State League Championship.

The AFL (and all other leagues I'd guess) will go with whatever makes them the most money...

U18 tournament is a good idea. Would generate serious draft hype if advertised right and tickets were cheap.

18 v 17 for pick 1
16 v 15 for pick 3
14 v 13 for pick 5
12 v 11 for pick 7
10 v 9 for pick 9

Lowest ranked team gets the home game. Let's have a kruezer cup!!!

You can't do that. The draft is a "needs" based policy, not a "wants" based policy.

The whole point of the draft is to allow the worst performing teams to get access to the best players.

Imagine if 18th was 0-22, and 17th was 6-16. Then they play each other for the number one pick. As expected, 17th wins easily and get the best player in the draft - a player that the 18th team needs far more.

That goes against the whole concept of the draft.

17th would never have 6 wins. When was the last time a wooden Spooner went winless in a season?

Almost all years, the bottom 2 are as shite as each other. Your plucking at hairs

The point is that the weaker team should have access to the better player via the draft. The draft is a needs based policy.

I don't think it's a great PR exercise watching a team get flogged (especially if that team was actually LOWER on the ladder than the team that is defeating them) and then allowing the better draft pick to go with the winning team. It might not make a huge difference in the end, but it goes against the concept of the draft. Hence it will never happen.

Brisbane had the chance for the spoon this year, but pulled a massive upset in the last round. Why should they get punished draft picks because they were putrid all year, but tried their guts out against a finals team in the final round?

I reckon you will find, most last and 2nd last teams over the past 10 years where both as shite as each other

I can't see why you wouldn't play a dead rubber that's programmed into round 23 currently

I'm pretty most clubs would take another Friday /Saturday night game if offered to them

Putting some dead rubbers in the 'bye round' would be better than nothing I guess... interest will still be pretty low.

For those who want an all star game

Went to this game. Was more like a state of origin game but not as full on and the other side was the rest of the states v the Big V.

The only All Star game I saw was after the Ash Wednesday bush fires in early 1983, an all star team played premiers Carlton in a game to raise money for victims. It was in the pre-season which I feel is only time on calender to bring back genuine state of origin footy I enjoyed in the 1980's.
Mid season state of origin games started to not fit the footy calender as clubs got more professional and would pressure players not to play.
The pre-season in mid March is only time now where clubs could see reason to allow their best players to take part. Maybe there should be a financial kick back for the clubs. The more players of your club take part, a special lump sum payment to the club to encourage them to fully endorse it. Leave the NAB Challenge stuff for the players that are not elite enough for state representation.

As for round 24, just scrap it. A weekend without footy just does not feel right in September. The only way to make it work is to start the state league's earlier so that weekend is for all the grand finals. That starts the state leagues off at least 2 weeks earlier. Not sure it really is feasible.

Gives every team not in a final something to play for. And one spot higher with draft picks, could net the team the player they want.

I reckon this year, Brisbane v Carlton would have been an awesome game to watch, with the prize.
I like the idea, but I suspect clubs in the bottom 10 might start setting their sights on performing well in the Draft Pick Game by resting their players for that game. So we may have the same problem as now, but with the lower ranked team resting players for their 'big game'. Giving the bottom 10 a week off to avoid this defeats the purpose of using the game to fill in the bye, but it does have some merit on its own.

One thing I don't like about the AFL's proposal is that if your team is in the top 4 and they win their first final, you miss two weekends of football right when all you want to do is watch football. Granted there are other games, but waiting nearly two weeks between games to see your team is an eternity.

Gillon is setting up for the 17+5 fixture, which would be good if they dont screw it over

Hate the 17-5 idea... top 6 playing each other which devalues the finals immediately afterwards

Perhaps an idea is after rd 17 (id prefer 18, equal number of home games for all with a return game against a local rival)... is to split the top 8 into two groups... 1 4 5 8 in one group, 2 3 6 7 in the other, and do a full round robin, home and away, within those groups over 6 weeks.... prelims are 1st in group a v 2nd in group b and vice versa, GF

Yeah forget this idea of an U18 showcase at that time of year. The kids have obligations to win grand finals for their local clubs and that's taken pretty seriously.

I think it's a great chance to
(1) develop a showcase for women's footy. Next year perhaps too soon, but if there was a national comp a grand final at that time of year would be ideal.
(2) give the state leagues a chance to generate momentum for their finals series.

I think the 17-5 idea would mean the first two weeks of finals were superfluous. ie after that, have a weeks break (local and state league finals) then the top four go into prelims and final. its effectively seven weeks of finals if you think about it

Its attractive to the AFL because theres seven weeks of high quality games on TV.

the other teams ? for mine they play an under 25 competition

i cant see how the 17-5 fixture can ever come in. where is the allowance for the 2 derby/showdowns and the traditional 2 clashes between the big melbourne clubs?
i like the idea of mitchel madness at first glance. 24 rounds with players only able to play 22. sounds great at first glance if the 2 byes called for by AFLPA is all about player welfare.

I reckon the AFL should make it a final 7 after the home and away with 8th spot up for grabs.
All players from teams outside the 7 have to do a drug and alcohol test to claim 8th spot... the test is as follows:
Each player drinks a jug of beer
Each player snorts a line of cocaine
This continues until there is only one player left standing, whoever this player plays for is the team to finish 8th.

Why are they still bothering with the floating round 23 fixture if there's a bye the following week?
The fixture each year has a very similar feel with a few changes.

They must have a template and then randomise the non-fixed games.

Similar to the tennis draws with the 32 seeds already fixed, and then randomising everyone else.

Everyone thinks the R23 bye is a great idea leading into the finals (including me). But something needs to happen in this week to not lose any momentum coming up to the first week of the finals.

Could a Victoria V Allies one off game on saturday night be an option?
Of course it would be made up entirely of the bottom 10 teams so it's technically not the best of the best, but I think it would still be a great spectacle, and even keep fans of these bottom 10 teams interested in the footy!

For example the teams from last years bottom 10 could look something like this:
(excluding all of the post-season surgeries)

VICTORIA
B: H. SHAW T. MCDONALD S. DEMPSTER
HB: B. GODDARD M. HURLEY D. HEPPELL
C: D. SHIEL J. SELWOOD T. BOAK
HF: R. GRAY T. CLOKE S SIDEBOTTOM
F: J. ELLIOT J. CAMERON D SWAN
R: S. MARTIN S. PENDLEBURY G. ABLETT
I: M. MURPHY T. ROCKLIFF J. STEVEN C. WARD

ALLIES
B: C. ENRIGHT C. HOOKER J. PATFULL
HB: D. RICH H. TAYLOR B. GIBBS
C: H. HARTLETT M. DUNCAN B. VINCE
HF: C. WINGARD N. RIEWOLDT S. MOTLOP
F: D. ZORKO T. HAWKINS J. HOGAN
R: P. RYDER D. ARMITAGE D. BEAMS
I: B. EBERT P. DAVIS B. GRUNDY J. HARBROW

Just a roughie so i'm sure I've made a few blunders!
